The latest College Football Playoff rankings came out, and to no surprise, the top four teams were in the order that everyone expected. Further on down the line, there were some surprises, though. We’ll now take a look at our College Football Bowl Betting predictions of some scenarios for the Peach and Fiesta Bowls, which will be the College Football Playoff semifinal games.
College Football Playoff Projections – Who’s In, Who’s Out, and Who Could Get In?
The Peach Bowl
With Georgia coming in as the unanimous selection to be the top seed, they’ve set themselves up to be in the Peach Bowl. If they lose in the SEC Championship game to LSU, we still think that Georgia will make the playoffs, but they probably won’t be the top seed.
If the season were to end today, the USC Trojans would be the #4 seed in the playoffs and would play Georgia. USC has to first beat Utah in the Pac-12 title game. Utah gave USC its only loss of the season. If Utah wins, USC will more than likely be eliminated from playoff contention.
The Fiesta Bowl
With their convincing win over the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Michigan Wolverines moved up to the #2 spot in the latest playoff rankings. Michigan faces Purdue this weekend in the Big 10 Championship game.
Michigan has the easiest path to the playoffs among all of the teams in contention, as Purdue hasn’t had the best of seasons, and they were lucky to win a mediocre Big 10 West.
The TCU Horned Frogs have been the surprise of the college football season. TCU went through the Big 12 with an unblemished record and will now face Kansas State in the Big 12 title game.
Kansas State had a huge lead over TCU in their game in October, but TCU came roaring back to take a 38-28 victory. We’re not sure what the committee will do with TCU if they lose this game, but if we had to take a guess, we think they would be on the outside of the playoff bubble looking in.
Speaking Of Outside Looking In…
The Ohio State Buckeyes were embarrassed in Columbus by Michigan last Saturday. Many felt that the Buckeyes were a lock to win that game and a lock to make the playoffs. They still have a shot, but they need things to happen. First off, they need Utah to beat USC. With a loss, USC is out of playoff contention. If USC does lose, that could create a lot of issues.
Hanging around at #6 in the rankings is the Alabama Crimson Tide. With their next game being a bowl game, Nick Saban’s squad is anxiously awaiting the results of this weekend’s games.
If USC loses, could the Tide sneak past the Buckeyes for a playoff spot? You never know. What if TCU and USC both lose?
Here’s where things get even more interesting. Coming in at #7 are the Tennessee Volunteers. Their loss to South Carolina put Tennessee at two losses on the season. Their other loss came to Georgia.
Tennessee does hold a victory over Alabama, who also has two losses. With Hendon Hooker being out for the season, we think that is the reason why Tennessee is not ranked ahead of Alabama. It would probably take a miracle for the Vols to make the playoffs, but there’s still a slight chance.
