Boxing Lines: Floyd Mayweather Vs Logan Paul Update

Boxing Lines: Floyd Mayweather Vs Logan Paul Update

Written by on February 19, 2021

Logan Paul continues to believe a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is possible. But as boxing fans, we know that an LP versus Money fight is probably on the back burner. Let’s take a closer look to our boxing update so you can keep planning your bets against their Floyd Mayweather odds.

Logan Paul Continues to Train while Haney Says He’s the New Mayweather

After Mayweather’s camp told Logan they’d delay the bout, Paul said it was due to COVID and possibly money. Most believe it’s because fight fans know brother Jake as the more serious boxer. In fact, Floyd tweeted that if Jake beats Ben Askren in his upcoming bout, he’d take on JP.

Mayweather made the point of saying he’s also looking forward to fighting Logan Paul. But Floyd turned 44 next Wednesday on Feb. 24. Why would Mayweather want to take a chance on Logan when he could make much more money against Jake?

It makes more sense for Floyd to wait and see if Jake beats Askren, a former MMA fighter. If JP pulls off the victory against a real brawler, Mayweather Jr. could skip taking on Logan and instead fight his brother.

Haney says he’s a Money Mayweather clone

The hottest young fighter around, 21-year-old Devin Haney, said he’s a young Pretty Boy Floyd before Floyd became Money Mayweather. It’s difficult to argue with Haney.

The fighter has a 25-0 record with 15 knockouts. He fights like Floyd, or attempts to, anyhow. But Haney hasn’t fought anyone of note except for Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Gamboa is 38-years-old. He had no shot in their Nov. 7, 2020 bout. When Floyd was young, he fought against the best of his generation, including Jose Luis Castillo twice, undefeated and much bigger Diego Corrales, undefeated Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, you name it.

Also, Haney doesn’t fight close the way Floyd did. He prefers to keep his distance, which could be an issue when he goes up against taller fighters like Ryan Garcia.

If Haney does fight Teofimo, Loma, Gervonta Davis, and Garcia, and manages to beat all four of those guys, he’ll stamp himself as a Floyd clone. Until then, he’s a good fighter who hasn’t proven he’s great.

Lopez considers dropping Top Rank just like Floyd did

Speaking of the top-ranked lightweight in the world, Teofimo Lopez is considering, like what Floyd did, dropping Bob Arum and Top Rank. Teofimo doesn’t feel he’s making enough money fighting for Arum.

Per Lopez, “I’m looking forward, and I’m moving forward. If you can’t meet the terms, then like I said, I’m taking my talents somewhere else.”

Teofimo has a point. He beat the pound-for-pound best in the world, Vasiliy Lomachenko. Lopez’s mandatory challenger is George Kambosos Jr. But Teo wants to make a mega-fight with Garcia, Haney, Loma in a rematch, or Davis.

The days of boxers having to kowtow to promoters like Arum and Don King are over. Lopez is boxing’s second or third biggest star after Canelo and, maybe, Tyson Fury.

Teofimo deserves to run his own career, or at least hire someone who will give him the best possible deal. If Top Rank can’t do that, he should move on.
