Top 5 Victories of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Analysis – Boxing Lines

Written by on January 29, 2021

It’s close to crunch time. Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Logan Paul will soon step into the ring for their February 20 bout. Money Mayweather expects to grab another gigantic pool of pay-per-view dollars. Floyd hopes that by beating Paul he’ll dissuade amateurs from using their celebrity status to make money in boxing.

We’re going to have to wait for after fight to know if Floyd got his wish. In the meantime, and for this week, check out Floyd’s top five wins. The victories happened during various times in Mayweather’s long and storied career. That said, let’s jump right into action so you can continue preparing your bets against our Floyd Mayweather odds.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s Top 5 Victories Through Out His Career

Top 5 Floyd Mayweather Jr. Wins

  1. Floyd beats Oscar De La Hoya

We believe Floyd’s 2007 split-decision victory over Oscar De La Hoya is one of his most important and impressive victories. De La Hoya had just beaten Ricardo Mayorga for the WBC Light Middleweight title. Up until beating De La Hoya, Floyd had fought and beaten some great fighters. But Oscar was a living legend who had just won a belt. So even though Floyd had fought more impressively before facing De La Hoya, the victory put Money on the map.

  1. Mayweather Jr. takes down Juan Manuel Marquez after a 2 year layoff

3 of the 5 fights on our Top 5 happened back-to-back-to-back. Mayweather fought Oscar on May 5, 2007. He beat Ricky Hatton in December that year. Then in 2008, Floyd fought and beat the great Juan Manuel Marquez. JMM already had a couple of losses on his record, including one to Manny Pacquaio. Even though the fight went the distance, Floyd dominated Marquez. Mayweather Jr. was at the top of his game in this bout.

  1. Pretty Boy hands Ricky Hatton his first loss

Ricky Hatton was 43-0 when he entered the ring against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Although some had questioned Ricky’s record, Hatton had beaten Luis Castillo and Kostya Tzuy. Like what Floyd would do to Marquez less than a year later, Pretty Boy dominated Hatton. Ricky didn’t have the skills to stick with Floyd. Mayweather Jr. landed a devastating short left as Hatton, like he always did, moved straight forward. The punch ended Ricky’s night, and, for the most part, his career.

  1. Money beats the next great champion

We shouldn’t look past Floyd’s victory over Canelo Alvarez. The fight happened in 2013 and no matter what anyone believes, Floyd didn’t just kick back and let Canelo punch himself out.

In the fifth round, Mayweather landed a great right after doing something that few boxers, maybe none, in the history of the sport can do. Floyd threw a jab and then switched positions on the jab in mid-throw. That forced Canelo’s head to the position where Mayweather could land the right.

  1. Floyd takes down undefeated Diego Corrales

Make no mistake, Floyd dominated Diego Corrales in their 2001 fight. Money knocked Chico down 5 times. Heading into the match, though, many questioned whether Mayweather could get past the taller, bigger, and more powerful Corrales.

The punch that knocked Corrales down for the fifth time was a patented Mayweather Jr. left hook. During his prime, Floyd could throw a left hook with power from any angle. What should have been a pitter-pat punch turned out to be the one that ended Diego’s night.

Will Floyd try the location-switch jab, or the power-flash left hook against Logan Paul? Fight fans don’t have much longer of a wait to find out. Circle February 20 and get ready for Mayweather-Paul!
