Breeders’ Cup Evolution, History and Actuality

It was in 1984 and thanks to the visionary John Gaines, was the idea of creating a Horse Race where the best horses in the world would meet, who would culminate each season answering the question of which horse is the best.

The idea was to create an event of such magnitude that it would resemble the Super Bowl, in this case, 7 races for different horses of different ages and sexes, and obviously participating in the same track on the same day.

The Breeders’ Cup debuted on a sunny October afternoon in 1984 at Hollywood Park in Southern California.

By 1985, the second Breeders Cup race was broadcast on NBC to 40 countries and had newspaper coverage in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden and Japan.

John Gaines sold Gainesway Farm in 1989, yet remained involved in the breeding and racing industry.

The event has always been held at the end of October, where it used to be held in a single day, since 2007 and currently, it is disputed in two days and the venue varies from year to year, being between the main Santa Anita Park and Churchill Downs.

This year the number of races was also increased from 8 to 13, with 14 participating horses.

In addition, the Breeders’ Cup Challenge was created, with a series of thoroughbred races taking place in the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, South Africa, Argentina, Germany, Japan, Australia and even Brazil.

The winner of each race earns a ticket to the Championship Race.
