With sports leagues across the globe essentially shuttered for the foreseeable future, you might well imagine that there is nothing to wager on. That is not the case, though, as politics, entertainment, and even eSports are all still available to be bet on. We thought that it might be fun to start looking at some things that you might otherwise never have imagined wagering on if sports were still in full swing. Greta Thunberg (-130)
It’s not very often that you see a teenager up for a prize as esteemed as this one, but the overwhelming favorite to name the Nobel Peace Prize this year is Greta Thunberg. The 17-year old native of Sweden made a huge impact at the UN Climate Summit last year, where her “how dare you” speech caught the attention of politicians and global citizens. She is a tireless activist for climate change and looks to be about as close to a sure bet as it gets to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Jacinda Ardern (+170)
Nothing puts a country into a tailspin quite like a terrorist attack, which is what the citizens of New Zealand had to live through last year. 49 people were killed in the senseless attack, with Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, quickly on the scene to respond and try to calm the people of Christchurch, where the attacks took place. She did a fantastic job of bringing people together and restoring a sense of calm, so she definitely deserves to be on this list.
Reporters Without Borders (+700)
Based in Paris, France and originally known as Reporters Sans Frontieres, Reporters Without Borders in a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting freedom of the press and advocating for journalists across the world. They have been doing outstanding work since their inception, but they are particularly important now, as we live in a world where “fake news” is all to commonly used to dismiss real reports and articles that some people simply do not want to believe.
UNHCR (+850)
The United Nations, as well as the personnel and organizations that fall under their umbrella, have own the Nobel Peace Prize no less than 11 different times. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) won the prize back in 1981 and are back in the running again this year. This organization is dedicated to working with refugees by helping them seek and maintain asylum in safe nations and prevent them from being returned to parts of the world that are in political or economic turmoil.
After this group, the odds begin to fall off rather sharply, so you have to believe that the winner is going to come from here, It would be a stunning upset if Greta Thunberg were not to win the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020.
