Canadian Football League Week 8 Betting Analysis & Picks

The CFL has seen the top three teams establish themselves from the rest of the back thus far this season. The challenge for those franchises will be maintaining that status as the season goes along. With Week 8 starting, the CFL schedule is inching toward the halfway mark.

Let’s dive into the matchups happening in week eight so you can bet against their CFL betting lines as their odds have shifted a fair bit since last week.

Canadian Football League | Friday July 28th – Sunday July 30th, 2023

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ottawa Redblacks

CFL Odds: Tiger-Cats +3.5; Redblacks -3.5 / Tiger-Cats +600; Redblacks -1000 / O/U 21.5
TD Place Stadium, Ottawa, Canada
Friday July 28th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. ET

Dustin Crum has led an exciting turnaround for the Redblacks’ offense. Ottawa’s quarterback has led the Redblacks to back-to-back overtime victories over Winnipeg and Calgary. Ottawa has improved its record to 3-3 and has a chance to start gaining ground if it can grab another win over struggling Hamilton.

The Tiger-Cats saw their two-game winning streak come to an end last week when Hamilton ran into undefeated Toronto. The Tiger-Cats are 2-4 against the spread this season.

Hamilton will have to make do with a new starting quarterback. Rookie Taylor Powell will make his first start Friday night. Powell will struggle, and Ottawa will win its third straight game.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Toronto Argonauts

CFL Odds: Roughriders +10.5; Argonauts -10.5 / Roughriders +600; Argonauts -1000 / O/U 21.5
BMO Field, Ontario, Canada
Saturday July 29th, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. ET

The Argonauts are undefeated and have the league’s most consistent offense. Toronto is putting up 37.3 points per game and looks even better than the team that won the Grey Cup last season. The Argonauts have been just as effective against the spread, covering the number in all five games.

Toronto has the top rushing attack in the league and has a dependable quarterback in Chady Kelly. Saskatchewan will be going through a bit of a change this weekend as veteran quarterback Trevor Harris will be out with a knee injury. Mason Fine will be called on to replace him.

BC Lions at Edmonton Elks

CFL Odds: Lions -9; Elks +9 / Lions -600; Elks +1000 / O/U 21.5
Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Quebec , Canada
Saturday July 29th, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. ET

The Lions suffered misfortune last week when quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. suffered a knee injury during a 19-9 win over Saskatchewan. Entering Week 7, Adams was the second-leading passer in the league for total passing yards. BC will need to lean on Dane Evans.

The question for the Elks is, with Adams being injured, can Edmonton finally break through? The Elks have covered two of the past three games against the spread but are still 0-7 overall this season. Edmonton has struggled to move the ball on offense.

The Elks ranks ninth in the league in total yards per game, gaining 320.3 per contest. Edmonton is last in the league in scoring, only averaging 15 points per game.

Calgary Stampeders at Montreal Alouettes (-2.5)

CFL Odds: Stampeders +2.5; Alouettes -2.5 / Stampeders +600; Alouettes -1000 / O/U 21.5
Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Quebec, Canada
Sunday July 30th, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. ET

The Alouettes have taken three consecutive losses since opening the season 2-0. Montreal has just gone through a brutal stretch of the schedule where it took losses to the top three teams in the league. During the Alouettes’ last game, Montreal played Toronto tight in a 35-27 loss.

The Alouettes have leaned on their defense to start the season. Montreal is fourth in the league in points allowed, only giving up 22.2 points per game. Calgary has had some bad luck this season. The Stampeders have lost twice in overtime and are 2-4 against the spread. Calgary will need to find a way to turn things around to stay in the race.
