Every year of the College Football Playoff, an ACC team has made the semifinals. That streak almost surely will end this season following Wake Forest’s upset loss in Week 10 – now, every ACC team has at least one loss. Here are two games to parlay in Week 11, including a big one for Wake.
No. 4 Oklahoma at No. 18 Baylor (+6)
Important game in the Big 12 on Saturday at noon ET. The Sooners are the only team in the league without a loss and Baylor is in third place, two games back. Thus, if the Bears lose this they are in a tough spot to reach the Big 12 title game but in great shape to do so with an upset.
Baylor might have been looking ahead to this game when they were upset 30-28 at TCU on Saturday. Junior QB Gerry Bohanon completed 14-of-20 passes for 215 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. With the game hanging in the balance, two of Baylor’s final three drives ended in an interception. With a little over a minute left, Bohanon locked onto intended target TE Ben Sims from the snap and was picked off by TCU’s Shadrach Banks, ending the game.
“My heart breaks for Gerry,” said Baylor head coach Dave Aranda, whose team had a three-game winning streak snapped in falling to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12. “He just didn’t see (Banks), or at least not until it was too late. He showed a whole lot of fight and just all the things that I’ve come to believe about Gerry. His competitiveness and his heart were on full display today. I couldn’t be prouder of him.”
TCU was 7-of-14 on third down, converting on third-and-10 or longer three times on one drive.
“You’ve got a third down, or whatever it is, to get a pass rush going,” Aranda said. “We’ve got to be better with that mindset and that attitude in terms of our special ops people. I feel like there’s been improvement, just not enough.”
Abram Smith rushed for 125 yards on 18 carries and became the 15th 1,000-yard rusher in program history and first in five years for Baylor.
Oklahoma (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) has been off since a 52-21 rout of Texas Tech on Oct. 30. Caleb Williams threw for 402 yards and six touchdowns – he just recently took over for Spencer Rattler as the starting QB. Marvin Mims caught four passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, and Mario Williams had five receptions for 100 yards and a score to help the Sooners extend their nation-leading winning streak to 17 games.
This marks Oklahoma’s 15th 9-0 start in program history, and its first since the 2004 season. The Sooners have scored on each of their last 42 red zone trips. OU’s 47 red zone scores are the most in the country, as are its 37 red zone touchdowns.
Last year, Oklahoma beat Baylor 27-14 behind two TD passes from Rattler. The Sooners held Baylor to 288 yards, including 25 yards rushing.
No. 21 NC State at No. 13 Wake Forest (-2.5)
Huge game from the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Atlantic Division with a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday. Wake leads the division at 5-0 in league play and NC State is second at 4-1. So if the Deacons win this game, they are most likely going to reach the ACC title game.
While Wake Forest lost 58-55 to North Carolina on Saturday, it actually counted as a non-conference game. Sam Hartman was a monster in the loss in going 25-of-51 for 398 yards and five passing and two rushing touchdowns. The seven total TDs were a Wake Forest record. Hartman has now thrown 60 career touchdowns, which ties Riley Skinner for the most touchdown passes in Wake Forest history.
Over the last five games A.T. Perry and Jaquarii Roberson, who are Wake Forest’s two wide receivers up for the Biletnikoff Award, have combined for 1,156 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns. Against the Tar Heels, Perry (129) and Roberson (111) each registered over 100 receiving yards for the third time this season. Perry now has 10 touchdown receptions this season, which is the fourth-most in program history.
NC State beat Florida State 28-14 on Saturday. QB Devin Leary completed 21-of-32 passes for 4 scores, all four to different receivers, with three going for at least 43 yards. Leary threw an INT for the first time in 228 attempts (dating back to the second game of the season). The INT came on a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the second quarter. He had also thrown 20 TD passes since his last interception.
NC State shutout FSU in the first half, it was the first time the Pack held an opponent scoreless in the first half on the road since 2015 at Boston College. NC State has now defeated both Clemson and Florida State in the same season for the first time since 2002.
Last year, NC State beat Wake Forest 45-42. Ricky Person Jr. scored the short go-ahead touchdown with 5:51 left. He also threw a jump-pass TD throw near the goal line in the third quarter.
