We have a new No. 1 team in the country as LSU has taken over the top spot in the AP Top 25, jumping rival Alabama. Both schools are off this week ahead of a mega-clash on Saturday, Nov. 9 with the winner probably claiming the SEC West title. West Virginia at No. 12 Baylor

The surprising Bears are now the only unbeaten team in the Big 12 after Oklahoma was shocked at Kansas State over the weekend. That probably ended the Sooners’ chances of getting back to the College Football Playoff – it’s all on Baylor now. Both these schools were off last week. BU comes off a 45-27 win at a pretty good Oklahoma State team. The Bears scored 21 unanswered points in the final 9 ½ minutes and won at Boone Pickens Stadium for just the second time in the Big 12 era.
Charlie Brewer threw for 312 yards, JaMycal Hasty had a combined 205 yards rushing and receiving and the defense even got in the act with a fumble return for a touchdown by linebacker Terrel Bernard as Baylor overcame a fourth-quarter deficit for the third time in the last four weeks and nation-leading sixth time since the start of the 2018 season.
The Bears have won nine straight games (dating back to 2018 season), tying for the third-longest winning streak in program history (longest since 11/5/2011-9/21/2012). Baylor have started the season 7-0 for the first time since starting the 2015 season 8-0. The Bears have forced a punt on all 7 opponent first possessions this year.
Baylor is 12-3 when creating three or more turnovers in a game and 26-4 in games where they have a positive turnover margin, including four 2019 victories. Matt Rhule coached teams are 24-8 when recording 2+ turnovers forced and have won 19 of the last 23 when doing so.
What about West Virginia?
WVU is 3-4 and comes off a 52-14 blowout loss to Oklahoma. Jalen Hurts led OU to touchdowns on four straight possessions in the first and second quarters to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room at halftime, and then directed a 21-point third quarter outburst to blow the game open.
West Virginia’s two touchdowns came in the second quarter and were the result of Austin Kendall passes to T.J. Simmons. Kendall, returning to Oklahoma where he spent three years backing up Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, completed 15-of-31 passes for 182 yards before giving way to redshirt freshman Trey Lowe III in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Leddie Brown, freshmen wide receiver Ali Jennings, freshmen safety Kerry Martin Jr. and redshirt sophomore linebacker Exree Loe, earned their first career starts against Oklahoma. West Virginia has had 24 first-time starters this season. Jennings and Martin Jr. are the fourth and fifth true freshman to start for WVU this season.
WVU routed Baylor last year but the Mountaineers were a lot better then.
No. 15 SMU at No. 24 Memphis

Huge game in the AAC West Division – not too often you have two ranked schools from the AAC facing off. The winner also has an inside track to seize the Group of 5’s New Year’s Six berth as well.
SMU is the conference’s only team without an overall loss. It comes off a 34-31 win at Houston last Thursday. Shane Buechele threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns, and Xavier Jones ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs took advantage of Houston’s three turnovers, converting them into 14 points. SMU had seven sacks for 51 yards and 13 tackles for loss.
The Mustangs have at least one takeaway in 19 straight games (39 total) (T-2nd in NCAA FBS for longest active streak – Syracuse 21, Maryland 19). SMU is 8-0 for the first time since 1982 (SMU is 13-4 in last 17 games). Best since starting 1982 10-0 start in 11-0-1 season. The Mustangs are 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 1986. The No. 16 ranking is the highest for SMU since October 1985 when it was also ranked No. 16.
What about Memphis?
Memphis is a game behind SMU in the West and comes off a 42-41 win over Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane’s redshirt freshman kicker Jacob Rainey missed what would have been a 29-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. UofM yielded a season-high 584 yards, a season-high 102 plays and committed two turnovers.
Freshman running back Kenneth Gainwell had 24 carries for 149 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner late in the fourth quarter for the Tigers. Quarterback Brady White passed for 277 yards and two scores and receiver Damonte Coxie finished with five catches for 112 yards. Gainwell surpassed 100 yards rushing for the sixth-straight game to extend his record for a UofM freshman. He entered the game as the nation’ sixth-leading rusher at 118.6 yards per game.
