With Week 10 of the 2020 college football season getting underway in just over 24 hours, it’s time for our weekly look at the ‘winners and losers’ out of the latest national college football rankings. While three teams stand out as winners, just two teams make this week’s losers list, though they both got their in painstakingly infamous ways. As a change of pace, let’s start with this week’s two biggest losers so you can plan ahead your bets against their NCAAF odds for Week 10.
NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings: Winners and Losers After Week 9
Losers
Oklahoma State (3-1)
Talk about blowing it! The Cowboys were the only unbeaten team in the Big 12 at this time a week ago and represented the conference’s best chance to place a team in this year’s eventual College Football Playoff, but boy, did Oklahoma State blow it and blow it badly.
The Cowboys had what looked like a a very winnable game against an unranked Texas Longhorns squad that had already lost twice this season, but they came up small in the second half after going into the break up 24-20. Oklahoma State would eventually suffer a crushing 41-34 overtime loss that completely ruined their chances of reaching the four-team CFP this season.
While quarterback Spencer Sanders was outstanding in passing for 400 yards with four touchdowns and one interception, star running back Chuba Hubbard was held to just 72 rushing yards and no scores. The Cowboys also allowed Texas signal-caller Sam Ehlinger to throw a trio of TD passes despite limiting the senior signal-caller to just 169 passing yards in the day. Oklahoma State lost three costly fumbles – and their chance at a potential CFP berth in the process to make the Cowboys the biggest losers in the country heading into Week 10.
Michigan (1-1)
If Oklahoma State was the biggest loser in the national rankings last weekend, then now, No. 23 Michigan was right on their heels. The perennially underachieving Wolverines blew whatever shot they had of making a CFP berth by falling to in-state rival Michigan State 27-24 while never coming close to covering the chalk as what now looks like an insane 21.5-point home favorite.
Quarterback Joe Milton went an ugly 32-for-51 for 300 yards while failing to throw a TD pass and he led the team in rushing with 59 yards on 12 carries. Michigan’s defense had no answer for Michigan State quarterback Rocky Lombardi who passed for 323 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. Now, it doesn’t matter who the Wolverines beat over the remainder of the regular season. They’re completely toast when it comes to potentially getting selected for a CFP berth.
Winners
Indiana (2-0)
One week after their monumental upset of nationally-ranked Penn State, the Hoosiers man-handled Rutgers en route to a convincing 37-21 win last weekend. Indiana clearly has a gifted talent in lefty quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and this team clearly plays the right way under no-nonsense head coach Tom Allen. Still just a sophomore, Penix Jr. has thrown four TD passes and only one interception while adding a pair of rushing scores for good measure. Indiana ranks 25t nationally in scoring (36.5 ppg) and they could be winners again if they get past nationally ranked Michigan this coming weekend (they will).
BYU (7-0)
Independent BYU is off to a fantastic 7-0 start by ranking a stupendous ninth in scoring (44.4 ppg) and 11th in points allowed (13.4 ppg). The Cougars have a future NFL performer on their hands in junior quarterback Zach Wilson and likely another in linebacker tuned running back Tyler Allgeier. Wilson has thrown a phenomenal 19 TD passes and just two interceptions while Allgeier has rushed for 587 yards and seven touchdowns. The Cougars have a huge date against Boise State this coming weekend, but as it stand right now, BYU are huge winners heading into Week 10.
Texas A&M (4-1)
While I expected now, seventh-ranked Texas A&M to get past lowly Arkansas 42-31 in their Week 9 SEC showdown on Saturday, the fact of the matter is that the Aggies simply beat a team they were supposed to. Still, the Aggies have bounced back nicely from the 52-24 smackdown loss the took against No. 2 Alabama they took a month ago. Quarterback Kellen Mond has been fantastic in throwing 12 TD passes and just two picks and running back Isaiah Spiller is now clearly on his way to being a legitimate star after putting up 512 yards and five touchdowns. Three receivers have racked up at least 200 yards in receptions and four pass catchers have hauled in at least two TD grabs. Now, seventh in the national rankings, no one is looking at the Aggies sideways because of their humbling loss to the crimson Tide and that alone makes then winners heading into Week 10.
