If the stories are to be believed, we could well be seeing the college football playoff format changing sooner rather than later. While the 4-team playoff has proven to be a success, there are many who now view it as in need of a serious tweak. The idea of a 12-team playoff is now out there and looking as though it will be the way forward. For now, though, it will be business as usual, with the odds to win the National Championship this season already out there. It is the usual cast of characters in among the favorites, but who will win it all? Will it be one of those all too familiar teams, or will we see a team make a run that leads to a surprising championship season? Let’s take a closer look at the odds and options.
Odds To Win the 2021 College Football Championship – Bama Early Favorite, Clemson Smarter Pick
Favorite to Win the National Championship
It is absolutely no surprise to anyone that the Alabama Crimson Tide (+225) are in as the early favorite to repeat at champions this season. This is a team that has been dominant during the Nick Saban era and who have been to the National Championship Game in 5 of the 7 seasons since the playoffs have been in place. In fact, they have only missed the playoffs once, so why would they not be considered the team to beat heading into the 2021 season. Similarly, Clemson are another team that has dominated, making it to the playoffs in 6 out of 7 years. The Clemson Tigers are in at +450 to win it all.
The Smart Pick to Win the National Championship
It’s not always smart to play the favorite in any sport, but given the track records of Alabama and Clemson, it does seem wise to at least consider playing one of these two to pick up another National Championship. Realistically, though, if you had to pick just one, it would most likely be the Clemson Tigers. The fact of the matter is that they are far and away the best team in the ACC and should have no problem blasting through that conference without taking a loss. We will learn much more about them in Week 1, as they will open up the season against the Georgia Bulldogs. If they win that, there is no reason why they cannot roll to another ACC title and a spot in the playoffs without breaking too much of a sweat.
Potential Longshot Winner
It seems a bit odd to be talking about a team listed at +500 as a longshot, but that is exactly where the Georgia Bulldogs need to be listed. They have taken a bit of a backwards step since losing to Alabama in the 2018 National Championship Game and did not make it to the playoffs in the following years. They failed to win the SEC East last season, but they ended strong, as they final found their QB in JT Daniels, he will return for a full season, and when you consider that the Georgia D is always strong, you suddenly feel that this team has a shot. Week 1 against Clemson will tell us a whole lot more.
