He’s hit double figures in tackles in four games this season. “He’s a smart linebacker,” App State defensive coordinator Nate Woody said. “You have to recognize a lot of formations and find the gap the running back is going to hit. Eric does a good job of that and also steps out and is effective in the pass game. He has been very consistent for us from the first time he stepped on the field. His experience helps him improve each week.” Last year, App State beat ULL 28-7. Highlighting the dominant defensive effort, Appalachian State surrendered just 42 rushing yards on 36 carries (1.2 yards per attempt), tallied nine tackles for loss, sacked UL Lafayette quarterback Brooks Haack six times and hurried him eight times. The Mountaineers allowed just 171 yards, forced eight punts and blocked a field goal through UL Lafayette’s first nine possessions.

Jennings was 12-for- 23 for 143 yards and a touchdown for Louisiana while Jalen Nixon was 8-for- 13 for 84 yards while rushing for 58 yards on 12 carries. Jennings is a big (6’2, 230), physical player that gives the Ragin’ Cajuns’ run game, essentially, an extra running back. The Ragin’ Cajuns average 180 yards per game on the ground and are averaging 230 per game in Sun Belt play. Nixon replaced Jennings late in the first half of the New Mexico State game but suffered a broken ankle in overtime, leading Coach Mark Hudspeth to say that Jennings will be the team’s quarterback moving forward. Before slipping to 4-8 last year, the Ragin’ Cajuns had four consecutive nine-win season. With the LSU transfer Jennings at quarterback and 2014 Sun Belt player of the year Elijah McGuire at running back, the talent belies a record that’s the product of a four-overtime loss at Tulane and the two-overtime loss at New Mexico State in the previous two games.
