NCAAF Appalachian State Vs North Texas Expert Analysis

Written by on December 18, 2020

The 2020 college football bowl season will get underway on Monday when the Appalachian State Mountaineers and North Texas Mean Green square off in the inaugural edition of the Myrtle Beach Bowl. With both teams looking to cap off their respective seasons in style, let’s find out where the best betting value lies in what will be the first bowl game held in the state of South Carolina in two decades. In 2001,  the NCAA decided to protest South Carolina’s Confederate flag policies by excluding the state from college bowls. The ban was lifted in 2015, but it’s taken five years for the Palmetto State to land its first bowl game since then. That being said, let’s have a closer look at this upcoming matchup so you can bet against their NCAAF odds.

NCAA Football Odds & Predictions – Appalachian State at North Texas

Why Bet On Appalachian State

Appalachian State has gone 8-3 overall and 6-2 in Sun Belt Conference play to finish second in the East division. The Mountaineers will make their bowl game appearance fresh off a 34-26 road win over Georgia Southern on Dec. 12. Quarterback Zac Thomas passed for 208 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while running back Nate Noel rushed for 103 yards with one score. The win helped the Mountaineers move to 2-2 over their last four games.

The Mountaineers are ranked 34th nationally in total offense, 102nd in passing, ninth in rushing and 40th in scoring (31.8 ppg).

Defensively, Appalachian State is ranked a stellar 13th overall, seventh against the pass, 46th against the run and 19th in points allowed (19.3 ppg).

Why Bet On North Texas

North Texas snapped a two-game losing streak by getting past UTEP 45-43 in a flat-out thriller on Dec. 11 as quarterback Austin Aune passed for 302 yards with five TD passes and no interceptions while adding a touchdown run in the win. The Mean Green went 3-2 over their last five but will hit this bowl game having allowed 42 points or more in three straight games.

North Texas is ranked a stupendous seventh in total offense, 21st in passing, 13th in rushing and 24th in scoring (35.1 ppg). Defensively, the Mean Green are ranked 126th overall, 108th against the pass, 120th against the run and 123rd in points allowed (41.3 ppg).

Expert Analysis and Prediction

This is the first all-time matchup between Appalachian State and North Texas, but from where I’m sitting, the Mountaineers are the easy pick to get the outright win in this season-ending affair. Appalachian State has a pretty elite defense while North Texas is giving up points like they’re going out of style.

Still, I don’t like the high spread in this matchup and I believe North Texas will cover as nearly three touchdown underdogs after putting up 31 points or more in each of their last two games. The Mean Green have failed to cover the spread in three straight after going 2-0 ATS in their previous two games. Appalachian State has gone 0-2 ATS over its last two games and 1-6 ATS over their last seven games overall. Again, Appalachian State wins, but North Texas gets the ATS cover!

Pick: Appalachian State 41 North Texas 31
