California is undefeated because like ASU, they put an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball. The Golden Bears have already beaten a couple of teams they were supposed to lose straight up to: the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Washington Huskies. Both were straight up Golden Bear victories as an underdog. Now back at home, Cal should have no trouble using their D to frustrate the Sun Devils’ offense. Forget the Sun Devils’ 31-34 loss to Colorado in their last game. This one should play out much differently because both these squads will try to eat up clock and play a field possession game. ASU would much prefer to play that way while Cal always plays that way.
The Golden Bears failed to cover against both Cal-Davis and North Texas because of how they play. Cal doesn’t blow out teams. That’s not their game plan. What they do is keep the ball away from you, play conservatively, and then use their defense to get the upper hand.
