Last Season
Arizona beat Washington State in a 58-37 shootout a year ago. Khalil Tate rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown and passed for 275 more and two scores. J.J. Taylor gained 157 yards on 13 carries for Arizona, including touchdown runs of 79 and 3 yards after Washington State had rallied to take the lead in the third quarter behind backup quarterback Tyler Hilinski (sadly, Hilinski committed suicide back in January). Hilinski replaced Luke Falk late in the first half and ignited what had been a sputtering offense. The Wildcats rolled up 310 yards rushing and 58 points against a Washington State team that had ranked third in run defense and second in points allowed in the Pac-12.Arizona is 27-16 all-time vs. Wazzu and 11-5 in Pullman. Arizona is 6-5 all-time against ranked WSU teams, with its last such in Pullman coming on Nov. 4, 2006.
Why Bet on Arizona?
The Cats have been off since beating Colorado 42-34 two weekends ago. Khalil Tate threw for career-high 350 yards and five touchdowns. Arizona (5-5, 4-3 Pac-12) struggled early while falling into a 10-0 hole, then scored on its next eight possessions. J.J. Taylor provided balance to the Wildcats’ offense, running for 192 yards on 40 carries.Tate now has thrown five touchdown passes in three games in his career, becoming the first Arizona quarterback ever to do that. Willie Tuitama and Anu Solomon each did it twice. Tate was one touchdown shy of tying Tom Tunnicliffe’s school record of six, set in 1982 versus Pacific. Tate now has 19 touchdown passes on the season, which is tied with Nick Foles (2009), Jason Johnson (2001) and Ortege Jenkins (1997) for ninth all-time in single-season history at Arizona. Meanwhile, it marked the third straight game Taylor has rushed for at least 150 yards. Taylor is the first Arizona running back to rush for at least 150 yards in three straight games since Ka’Deem Carey closed out the 2013 season with three-straight 150-yard games.
Arizona scored 26 points in the second quarter vs. Colorado. That marked the highest single-quarter output in a conference game since the Wildcats scored 36 points in the fourth quarter against Cal in 2014 in a 49-45 victory.
UA’s run defense has held its last three opponents below 4.0 yards per carry for the first time since 2010. The Wildcats have improved their scoring defense by 9.4 ppg from non-conference to conference play, which is the second-best improvement among Power 5 teams.
Arizona is 47-121-1 all-time in games against AP Top 25 teams, including 1-0 in 2018 (W, 44-15 vs. No. 19 Oregon on 10/27). The Wildcats have defeated at least one ranked team in 13 of the last 15 seasons.
Why Bet on Washington State?
Washington State kept its playoff hopes alive with a 31-7 win over Colorado last Saturday. Washington State led by only three at the half and seven heading into the fourth quarter. They did dominate the clock, however, winning the time of possession by nearly 24 minutes and holding the Buffaloes to an average drive of just 1:38. Gardner Minshew, who was hardly pressured all afternoon as Colorado failed to register a single sack for the first time all season, finished 35-of-58 passing for 335 yards and two TDs.
Minshew upped his season total to 3,852 yards, 6th-most in WSU single-season history. Minshew recorded his 10th career 300-yard game, tying Luke Falk’s season record set in 2015. Minshew now has 29 TD passes, 7th-most in WSU single-season history. James Williams had a 3-yard rushing TD, his 12th total TD of the season, tied for 9th-most in WSU single-season history. Williams’ TD was his 23rd career total TD, tied for 7th-most in WSU history. Williams caught five passes, upping his career reception total to 182, tying Brandon Gibson for 7th-most in WSU history.
WSU is 9-1 for the first time since 2002 and is looking for its first 10-1 start since 1997 which would match the program record for wins. The Cougars own the nation’s best passing attack (392.3 ypg) and the No. 20-ranked defense in the country (324.1 ypg). Minshew II paces the country in passing (385.2) and is sixth in touchdown passes (29).
Washington State has claimed 12 straight victories at Martin Stadium, the third-longest home winning streak in program history. Last season, WSU went 7-0 at home, the most home wins in program history and was the first perfect home mark since going 6-0 in 2003. WSU’s 12-game home winning streak is tied for the 5th-longest active streak in the country (Alabama – 24).
