How to Bet Auburn at Alabama NCAA Football Week 13 Spread

Written by on November 22, 2018

It has been a hugely disappointing season for Auburn, which began the year in the Top 10 of the polls. The Tigers are now unranked but could salvage their season with the biggest upset in Iron Bowl history against No. 1 Alabama on Saturday. Alas, Mybookie Sportsbook oddsmakers give Auburn essentially no shot.

Last Season

Auburn stunned the Tide 26-14 last season to win the SEC West … but of course Auburn then lost the SEC title game to Georgia and the Tide got into the playoff regardless. Jarrett Stidham passed for 237 yards and ran for a fourth-quarter touchdown. Kerryon Johnson (now in NFL) delivered a jump pass for a touchdown and ran 30 times for 104 yards before leaving in the fourth quarter with a right shoulder injury. Ryan Davis caught 11 passes for 139 yards. It was Auburn’s biggest margin of victory in the Iron Bowl since winning 49-26 in 1969. Alabama’s Jalen Hurts passed for 177 yards and a touchdown while running 17 times for 80 yards.

Alabama and Auburn will meet for the 83rd time on Saturday. Alabama holds a 45-36-1 (.555) lead in a series that dates back to the 1893 season. Alabama has had the upper hand in recent meetings, claiming seven of the last 10 contests. Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban is 9-7 all-time against Auburn, including a 7-4 mark in the Iron Bowl and a 4-1 record with the Tide at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is 2-3 against Alabama in his six years with the Tigers.

Why Bet on Auburn?

With Alabama ranked No. 1 in the country, Auburn comes in as a heavy underdog. But the Tigers have been in this position before. They were underdogs in 2013 when won on the Kick Six, and they were underdogs again last year when they beat the Crimson Tide, 26-14.

The Tigers closed their home schedule last week with a 53-0 rout of little Liberty. The Auburn defense got things started early when senior linebacker Darrell Williams intercepted a pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers an early 10-0 lead. It was the first career interception for Williams. Then on the very next drive, it was the special teams turn to make a play. Auburn cornerback Jordyn Peters came rushing in and blocked a punt that went out of the back of the end zone for a safety. This is the second game this season Auburn has scored on offense, defense, and special teams.

Auburn had a 100-yard rusher (Kam Martin) and receiver (Seth Williams) in the same game for the first time since last season’s Alabama game (Kerryon Johnson/Ryan Davis). Auburn registered a shutout of the opponent for the first time since the 2016 Alabama A&M game (55-0). In records back through 1967, 53-0 is the fourth-largest lead after three quarters in Auburn records and the largest since a 59-point lead against ULM in 2003.

Davis extended his Auburn career receiving record with 169 career receptions (4 today). Davis ranks 14th in Auburn career receiving yardage (1,517). Jarrett Stidham now ranks fifth in Auburn career completions with 442 (12 today); next Pat Sullivan (452 from 1969-71).

The Auburn defense has allowed a TD on just 29.0 percent (9-31) of its opponents’ trips into the red zone, second best in the nation. Auburn has allowed only six rushing TD, tied for the second-best mark in the country. The Tigers have held seven of 11 opponents without a rush TD this season.

Why Bet on Alabama?

This Auburn team is more than a three-touchdown underdog, its offense is one-dimensional and Alabama has shut out its last two SEC opponents. Alabama blanked LSU 29-0 and then pummeled Mississippi State 24-0. Those teams, by the way, both defeated Auburn.

The Tide warmed up with a 50-17 win over the Citadel. The Crimson Tide (11-0) outscored the Bulldogs (4-6) 40-7 in the second half. Tua Tagovailoa led the Alabama offense going 18-of-22 for 340 yards through the air and three touchdowns.

Tagovailoa also added 37 rushing yards, including a one-yard touchdown plunge. Sophomore wideout Henry Ruggs III caught six passes for a team-high 116 yards while freshman receiver Jaylen Waddle ended the day with six catches for 90 yards and two scores.

Auburn at Alabama should be an easy victory for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama has opened the season with 11-consecutive victories by 20 points or more, which is the most to start a season in NCAA history. The streak also surpasses the previous record of 10 consecutive 20-point victories at any point in a season, set by Boise State from Sept. 14-Nov. 23, 2002.

It was the 52nd win for members of Alabama’s senior class. The group has now posted a record of 52-3 (.945) to rank No. 2 in NCAA history. Alabama’s 2017 senior class holds the NCAA record for most wins by a senior class with a 53-5 mark (.914). Alabama has now won 25-consecutive games at Bryant-Denny Stadium, which is now the longest home winning streak in school history. The Crimson Tide won 24 in a row at home (Bryant-Denny and Legion Field combined) from Sept. 18, 1971, to Nov. 9, 1974.

In addition to its 81-game winning streak against unranked teams, Alabama has lost just one game to a team ranked outside the top 15 in the Associated Press poll since the start of the 2008 season (No. 19 South Carolina in 2010). For perspective, no team in the FBS has lost fewer than 10 games to teams outside the top 15 in that same time frame.
