Why Bet on the Mississippi Rebels (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS)

One week after falling to Memphis (as I predicted) Ole Miss put Texas A&M on ‘lockdown’ in their 23-3, Week 8 win while covering the spread as a 6-point home favorite in the process. Quarterback Chad Kelly threw two touchdown passes to virtually offset his three interceptions and the Rebels got more balance to their offense thanks to the return of junior All-American lineman Laremy Tunsil. “I thought the whole offensive line did a great job. We ran the ball and they pass protected very well,” Kelly said. “Anytime you have Laremy (Tunsil) out there it’s going to help you. I thought all the guys did well on the offensive line. They did a great job.” Tunsil missed the first seven games due to an NCAA ruling on improper benefits, but returned to help the Rebels roll up a season-high 230 rushing yards. Ole Miss won the time of possession battle by over 11 full minutes and neutralized A&M standout defensive lineman Myles Garrett. “I’m extremely proud of our kids and our coaches. In adversity, you find a lot out about people and you find out who is really who,” Freeze said. “That’s what we challenged our kids with this week, that you play out of love and passion for 60 minutes and that will be good enough, at the end of the day, for us.” Kelly finished the game with 241 passing yards while completing passes to six different receivers, including Laquon Treadwell who finished with five catches for 102 yards and a score. Defensively, the Rebels forced three fumbles and recovered two while sacking Texas A&M quarterback Kyle Allen twice and harassing him into one interception.

Why Bet on the Auburn Tigers (4-3 SU, 1-6 ATS)

The Tigers played their hearts out but were on the wrong end of a heartbreaking 54-46 four-overtime loss against Arkansas while adding insult to injury by failing to cover the spread by a single point as a 7-point road dog. Arkansas signal-caller Brandon Allen tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Drew Morgan on the first play of the fourth overtime and Auburn failed to respond on the ensuing possession to lift the Razorbacks to victory in a wildly entertaining Week 8 affair. Auburn running back Peyton Barber rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns, including three in overtime, to lead the Tigers but it wasn’t enough to offset three TD passes from Allen. The teams traded touchdowns in the first two overtime periods, with Barber scoring on a pair of two-yard runs for Auburn, and Arkansas countering with a six-yard pass on fourth down from Allen to wide receiver Drew Morgan and a three-yard run by fullback Kody Walker. The longtime SEC rivals matched one another in touchdowns and two-point conversions in the third overtime, but on the first play of the fourth overtime, Allen connected with Morgan for the game-winner. Auburn quarterback Sean White went 19 for 32 for 254 passing yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and is 2-2 as the Tigers’ starting quarterback this season.

My Expert Game Analysis and Pick

60 percent of the betting public likes Ole Miss to win outright and cover the spread, but I don’t. First and foremost, outside of the Rebels’ surprising win over Alabama five weeks ago, I’m not overly impressed with the Rebels, especially seeing as how they got blown out by Florida and man-handled against Memphis two weeks ago. Auburn is playing at home and should have plenty of motivation to keep up with a Rebels team that isn’t that much better than the Tigers despite their records. The Rebels are just 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following an SU win and 1-5 ATS in their last six road games. Auburn has gone 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game while also going 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in their last five home dates against the Rebels.
