Bet The Baylor Bears Because…

Really? There is no good reason to bet on Baylor Bears (10-3 SU, 6-7 ATS) unless they’re getting three touchdowns. Wit head coach Art Briles out the door because of a series of sexual assault allegations, the Bears look like they’re going to be in for a very long 2016 season if you ask me. First and foremost, Baylor returns just five starters on offense and defense. The good news is that the Bears have two very good quarterbacks in Seth Russell and Jarrett Stidham and another elite wide receiver in KD Cannon who will move to No. 1 following the departure of gifted wideout Corey Coleman. Baylor also has two gifted running backs in Shock Linwood and Johnny Jefferson, but there’s bad news as well with the Bears having to replace all, but one of their starting offensive linemen. Defensively, Baylor lost all of their starting d-line, but they are solid at linebacker and in the secondary where there is experience in the forms of Taylor Young, Ryan Reid, Orion Stewart and Chance Waz. Still, interim head coach Jim Grobe will have his work cut out in keeping the Bears as an elite title contender, if that.

Bet The Oklahoma Sooners Because…

Because they’re playing at home and have a chip the size of Mount Rushmore on their collective shoulders after falling just short of their national championship hopes a year ago. The Sooners were an explosive bunch in 2015, ranking seventh in the nation in total offense (530.2 ypg) and a stellar fourth in scoring (43.5 ppg). More importantly, Oklahoma didn’t suffer a ton of losses on offense with seven starters back from last season’s squad. Oklahoma’s offense is led by Heisman Trophy candidate Baker Mayfield and gifted running backs Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon. The Sooners do have to replace No. 1 wide receiver Sterling Shepard and rebuild an offensive line that loses a whopping four starters, but there is plenty of young talent for Bob Stoops to work with and a quarterback at the helm that is clearly special. Oklahoma ranked a sold 40th in total defense a year ago (365.3 ypg) and even more impressive 28th in points allowed (22.0 ppg). The Sooners have seven returning starters on defense, but they lost their most dominant players with linebacker Eric Striker, defensive end Charles Tapper and linebackers Dominique Alexander and Zack Sanchez all moving on. That’s a loss of four first-team All-Big 12 selections, 265 tackles, 16.5 sacks and nine interceptions, so clearly, the Sooners have their work cut out for them on this side of the ball. The good news for Stoops is that defensive end Charles Walker, linebacker Jordan Evans, safety Ahmad Thomas and cornerback Jordan Thomas were all good enough to earn second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2015, so they’ve clearly got plenty of talent, even though linebacker is a concern.

With seven starters back on both sides of the ball, an elite quarterback, two gifted running backs and a solid defense, I see no way the Sooners lose this contest, making the only question surrounding this matchup whether or not they cover the spread. While there is no point spread for this contest right now, I’m expecting Oklahoma to be favored by anywhere between three (3) and ten (10) points, although I don’t think it really matters as the Sooners should win this contest by at least 11. Oklahoma went 6-2 ATS over its last eight games in 2015 and are 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS in their last seven Big 12 games. The Sooners man-handled the Bears in their 44-34 home win last season and that was with Art Briles on the sideline. Without their former offensive genius leading them, my college football picks selection says Oklahoma wins by two touchdowns.
