Dave Aranda’s Baylor Bears have continued to solidify their position as one of the best college football programs in the Big 12. This season, Baylor hopes to have the same success they had in 2021 when they made it to the Sugar Bowl and beat Ole Miss 21-7.
Can Baylor go back to the 2021 success? Or will 2023 be a repeat of Baylor’s 2022 season?
Let’s see if the Baylor Bears have what it takes to back the betting odds to win the National Championship.

What is Baylor’s’ Straight Up Prediction this Season?
Baylor finished 6-6 last season. In 2021, Baylor finished with an excellent 12-2 record. The key for Aranda’s team to turn it around rests on the shoulders of quarterback Blake Shapen, the Bears’ offensive line, and the defense.
Baylor’s offensive line must improve. To do so, Aranda attracted two of BYU’s best, the Barrington bros, Clark and Campbell, to transfer to Waco. If Clark and Campbell smoothly move into Baylor’s starting offensive line, watch out.
Freshman running back Richard Reese had a great season and Aranda convinced Oklahoma State RB Dominic Richardson to take his talents to Baylor. Arkansas wide receiver Ketron Jackson Jr. is now a Bear as well.
If everything works, Blake Shapen should have a good season. Baylor’s starting quarterback took a backward step in 2022 after leading the Bears to a Sugar Bowl victory in the 2021 season. Shapen must play well. If the bigs in front of him do their job, he should.
The real question is whether new defensive coordinator Matt Powledge, who was at Oregon, can get Baylor’s D back on track. Aranda built his career on the defensive side. So it pained him to see the Bears struggle stopping any team.
Baylor allowed over 26 points per game. So anything Powledge can do will be a positive. The secondary could struggle. So Powledge, who has a great resume, must strategize when facing teams like Utah and Texas.
The Bears have 8 home games this season. 2 road contests, Kansas State and TCU, should determine Baylor’s fate. The team will improve 2 games on the win side. Baylor goes 8-4 SU this season with the 4 losses happening versus Utah and Texas and on the road against K-State and the Horned Frogs.
Baylor SU Prediction: 8-4
What Will the Bears’ Against the Spread Record be this Season?
Baylor went 7-5 against the spread in 2022. Although at times there is a massive difference in against the spread records from season to season, there won’t be much difference for Baylor.
The Bears will win jut 2 more games straight up than they did last season. So we should expect a similar ATS record from 2022.
Baylor ATS Prediction: 7-5
What Will Be the Over Under Total Record for Baylor Bears Games in 2023?
Nobody expected Baylor’s defense to be as bad as it was last season, which is why the over/under total on Baylor games was 8-4.
The Bears should play much better defense. Oddsmakers will account for the improvements. A 6-6 over/under record is possible.
Baylor Over/Under Prediction: 6-6 | Bet Baylor Bears Regular Season Wins
