College football’s postseason begins Saturday with six bowl games (one involving FCS schools). Later this week, look for individual previews of the Cure, New Mexico, and Las Vegas Bowls. Here’s a look at the two other FBS bowls on Saturday, the Camellia and New Orleans, with NCAAF Odds.

Camellia Bowl: Georgia Southern vs. Eastern Michigan (pick’em)

  • When: Saturday, 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Georgia Southern is a Sun Belt team that finished 9-3 overall. Its best win was against then-No. 25 Appalachian State on Oct. 25, 34-14. The Eagles closed the regular season with a 35-14 win at rival Georgia State. Shai Werts threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third and Wesley Fields ran for 151 yards and a score.

First-year head coach Chad Lunsford has led a nice turnaround season following a five-win season in 2016 and a two-win season in 2017 for the program under former coach Tyson Summers. Lunsford assumed control of the team as an interim following a 0-6 start to the season last year under Summers.

The Eagles have committed only five turnovers this season, best in the FBS. The all-time NCAA (FBS) record for fewest is eight, accomplished in a season by six different teams. LSU (2017) was the most recent school to set the record while the 1940 Clemson Tigers were first.

Eastern Michigan is a MAC school that finished 7-5. EMU’s 20-19 win at Purdue as a 15-point underdog stands out as one of college football’s bigger upsets this season. Eastern Michigan’s defense allowed only 22 points per game this season (32nd in FBS). Its pass D surrendered only 5.7 yards per attempt to opposing quarterbacks, the seventh-best number in the country. The Eagles are 1-1 in bowl games since joining the MAC in 1976. This will be EMU’s first bowl game played in the continental United States since 1987 when the school was part of the California Bowl.

EMU Coach Chris Creighton will lead the Eagles into a bowl game for the second time after the Eagles came up short against Old Dominion, 24-20, in the 2016 Bahamas Bowl. Creighton is the first head coach in program history to lead Eastern to two bowl games.

The Camellia Bowl will mark the first football meeting between GS and Eastern Michigan. GS is 2-1 all-time against current teams from the MAC, splitting a pair of games against Western Michigan and downing Bowling Green in the 2015 GoDaddy Bowl.

New Orleans Bowl: Middle Tennessee vs. Appalachian State (-7)

  • When: Saturday, 9 p.m. ET (ESPN)

App State has lost Coach Scott Satterfield to Louisville. The 45-year-old Satterfield’s six-year tenure at App State started with a losing record but quickly turned it into a great program. Appalachian has gone 51-24 under Satterfield. The team claimed three-consecutive bowl games and as many conference titles since making the shift from FCS. That includes a 30-19 victory against Louisiana in the inaugural Sun Belt Conference title game.

The interim coach is Mark Ivey. He’s been at App State for seven seasons, serving mostly as the Mountaineers defensive line coach. Ivey was named App State’s assistant head coach at the beginning of this year. Under Ivey, the App State defensive line has assisted the Mountaineers defense in ranking among the nation’s best since transitioning from FCS play.

Appalachian State looks like a good NCAA Football Pick for this week.

The Blue Raiders were able to shake off a 1-2 start and an injury against Florida International to quarterback Brent Stockstill to win the C-USA East Division for the first time after FIU lost to Marshall. MT Raiders wanted to play in a bowl game closer to Christmas, but a 27-25 loss to UAB in the Conference Championship game changed that outlook. MTSU played a grueling non-conference schedule, which included losses to three SEC East teams.   Stockstill is healthy now and the senior has thrown for 3,214 yards with 28 touchdowns and only eight picks this year. Stockstill is an extremely accurate passer, and he has only had one multi-interception game this season.   Over the last three seasons, Middle Tennessee is 11-3 against the spread when coming off a straight-up loss. The Blue Raiders won their first bowl game since 2009 in last year’s Camellia Bowl.
