The Favorites

The Clemson Tigers have reached the College Football Playoff in all five years of its existence with four appearances in the national championship game and two victories. With quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne back, I think it’s a lock the Tigers really contend to win it all in 2020.
Alabama might be the No. 2 overall favorite to win the 2021 national championship, but I’m not buying the hype, seeing as how the Tide will have a new starting quarterback under center this coming campaign and they couldn’t get it done a year ago when Tua Tagovailoa went down.
I like Notre Dame a lot heading into 2020 behind Heisman Trophy candidate Ian Book and a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. The Fighting Irish came up just short of reaching the CFP a year ago, but I’ve got them getting in this season while seriously challenging for the title win.

Florida has a gifted quarterback in Kyle Trask and a head coach that knows how to win games against the biggest programs around in Dan Mullen. More importantly, Alabama, LSU and Georgia will all have new quarterbacks under center in 2020 and that could easily open the door for Florida to step in. Oklahoma has made a habit out of producing effective quarterbacks the last few seasons and I don’t see 2020 being any different as talented, but inexperienced quarterback Spencer Rattler takes over following three tremendous seasons by Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts.

Georgia lost starting quarterback Jake Fromm and then saw Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman opt to sit out the upcoming season. No matter how hard I try, I just don’t see the Bulldogs being a legitimate contender as they will have an experienced starter under center. The Tigers saw a whopping five players picked in the first round of this year’s NFL draft, but that’s not what leads me to think the Tigers will be nothing more than pretenders this coming campaign. No, it’s the loss of offensive coordinator Joe Brady that leads me to believe LSU is due for a big step-back season in 2020.

Baylor hired former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda to take over and has a really good quarterback in Charlie Brewer. Iowa State has a star in quarterback Brock Purdy and a head coach in Matt Campbell that gets the maximum out of his players.
