2017 Birmingham Bowl Betting Preview
The University of Pittsburgh, now in the ACC, has made the most appearances in this bowl with three, playing in three straight from 2011-13. The Panthers hold the record for fewest points scored in this bowl, 6 in a 22-point loss to SMU in 2012. Following the 2013 split of the original Big East Conference along football lines, the FBS schools reorganized as the American Athletic Conference, which retains the charter and ties in of the original Big East. Of the four schools to play in this bowl more than once, South Florida is the only one without a loss at 2-0. Last year as a 10.5-point favorite, the Bulls of the AAC beat South Carolina of the SEC 46-39 in overtime – the first OT in this bowl. USF had to play under an interim coach then because Willie Taggart already had taken the Oregon job. The 46 points scored by USF was a record for this bowl as were the 85 combined points. Bulls QB Quinton Flowers set the bowl record with five touchdowns responsible for, throwing for three and rushing for two – including the winner in overtime. He was deservedly named the game’s MVP. South Florida wasn’t the biggest favorite in this bowl’s history. That was Cincinnati at -11 in the 2007 bowl against Southern Miss. The Bearcats didn’t cover but won 31-21. That game was interesting in that both starting QBs, Southern Miss Jeremy Young and Cincinnati’s Ben Mauk, were picked off three times. Mauk was still named the game’s MVP as he threw four touchdowns.Previous Results
