Why Bet on Central Michigan?

CMU opened with a 38-21 win over FCS school Albany last week. Quarterback Quinten Dormady threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns in his Central Michigan debut and the Chippewa offense rolled up 529 total yards. Not exactly a great opponent but still a good start to put a one-win 2018 season in the rearview mirror in Jim McElwain’s first game as head coach. He was the former coach at Florida.

Dormady is a graduate transfer who made stops at Tennessee and then at Houston before landing in Mount Pleasant. Wide receivers Tyrone Scott and Kalil Pimpleton each caught their first touchdown passes in a CMU uniform. Pimpleton transferred to CMU from Virginia Tech and was forced to sit out the 2018 season because of NCAA transfer rules. The Chippewas converted on six of their 13 third downs, and were a perfect three-for-three on fourth-down attempts.

The Chippewas limited the Great Danes to 244 total yards, just 45 of it coming on the ground. The Chippewas ran 84 offensive plays to Albany’s 51, and CMU gained 31 first downs to the Great Danes’ 13. CMU held a decided advantage in time of possession, holding the ball for more than 36 minutes while the Great Danes had it for 23-plus minutes.

As for Wisconsin, CMU’s last game against a ranked team was at Michigan State last year, a 31-20 loss. CMU’s last victory over a ranked team was in 2016 at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys entered that game ranked 22nd by the Associated Press, 17th in the Coaches Poll. The victory was CMU’s first over a ranked opponent in a quarter century. Its previous win was when it knocked off No. 18 Michigan State, 20-3, on Sept. 14, 1991, at Spartan Stadium.

CMU is 4-3 in its last seven road openers with all four victories coming over Power 5 opponents. Central Michigan has just one player from the state of Wisconsin, offensive lineman Luke Goedeke. This is the first meeting between CMU and Wisconsin. The Chippewas are 6-26 all-time against the Big Ten.

Why Bet on Wisconsin?

Wisconsin blasted South Florida 49-0 last week, its most lopsided win in a road game in 23 years. Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor rushed for 135 yards and scored a career-best four touchdowns in the win. Taking up where he left off a year ago, when he led the nation with 2,194 yards and 16 touchdowns, Taylor scored on runs of 37 and 38 yards. The junior running back also had the first two receiving TDs of his career, scooting 36 yards up the left sideline after taking a quick flip from UW quarterback Jack Coan and later extending the ball over the goal line on a 12-yard reception that gave the Badgers a 28-0 halftime lead.

Taylor needs 694 yards to join Georgia’s Herschel Walker (5,596), Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne (5,091) and Oregon’s LaMichael James (5,082) as the only players to rush for more than 5,000 yards through their junior season.

Central Michigan vs Wisconsin is not going to be a close one.

Coan carried his share of the load, too, finishing with 19 of 26 for 199 yards without an interception. He threw for a career-high 193 yards on 17-for-23 passing, with 2 touchdowns. The Badgers have won each of Coan’s last 3 starts, dating back to last season. He is now 3-2 as UW’s starting quarterback. Coan completed 11 consecutive passes between the late first quarter and late third quarter.

The Badgers tallied their fourth shutout under Paul Chryst and the team’s first since blanking Minnesota, 31-0, on Nov. 25, 2017. The Badgers defense limited South Florida to just 157 total yards, UW’s lowest total since holding Minnesota to 133 yards in 2017. Wisconsin held the Bulls to a mere 26 rushing yards, the Badgers lowest defensive total since containing Iowa to 25 rushing yards on Nov. 11, 2017.

As for this game, Wisconsin has won 23 straight home openers, a run that dates to 1996 and trails only Florida (29 entering Saturday) among active streaks in the FBS. The Badgers are 34-2 all-time against current members of the MAC. They also play Kent State later this season.
