We have, in the past, spoken about how difficult it is to stay at the top of the heap in college football. The teams that are traditionally seen as the strongest are essentially forced to rebuild every year after sending a ton of players to the NFL, and while some can do it, others run into issues that take them out of the spotlight.
The question now is whether the Clemson Tigers are on the slide or simply experiencing a minor blip on the radar. They have now gone 2 straight seasons without going to the playoffs, which is considered unacceptable for a team expected to be in the National Championship hunt every season.
Can the Tigers bounce back this season or are they going to see their playoff missing streak extended to 3 years?
Let’s break down Clemson this year with a betting preview along with their college football betting lines to win the NCAA National Championship.

The Tigers in 2022
For the second straight season, the Clemson Tigers lost 3 games in 2022. That means that they have now lost 6 games in 2 years, which is the total number of losses they had in the previous 5. It is worth noting that one of their losses came in a bowl game, so they actually just lost a pair of regular season games, one of which they essentially let slip away against the South Carolina Gamecocks. They are a perfect example of the slim margins in this game, and how a single loss can mean the difference between going to the playoffs and missing out.
This is still a very good team, so the cries of doom and gloom from the fan base seem silly for now, but will they have something to complain about in 2023?
Tigers Quarterback in 2023
The Tigers will have a change at QB, with DJ Uiagalelei heading to the Oregon State Beavers through the transfer portal. That will mean that Cade Klubnik will take the reins and lead the offense, which still has plenty of weapons for him to work with. That said, his receivers are going to need to be a whole lot better than they were last season.
It was easy to put all the blame on the shoulders of Uiaglelei, but he didn’t always get the help he needed from his receivers’ group. Defensively, the Tigers should once again be sound.

2023 Clemson Tigers Betting Season
While the Tigers have been incredibly successful in the playoff era of college football, we do have to keep in mind that they operate in a conference that is considered weak when compared to the rest of the Power 5. Clemson essentially had it all their way for a while, but they are now seeing some teams, specifically the Florida State Seminoles, begin to rise and offer up a bigger challenge. The odds for this season bear that out, with Clemson in as the favorites at odds of +146, with the Seminoles pretty close to them on the board.
Barring some sort of disaster, the Clemson Tigers should be able to land one of the top 2 spots in the ACC and go to the Conference Championship Game. Whether that leads to a playoff spot remains to be seen. The bookies have them in at +1675 to win the Natty, so that is not exactly a total vote confidence. A lot is going to depend on how Klubnik performs in his first full season under center.
