College Football 2020 Playoffs Expert Analysis Update

Written by on December 16, 2020

With this upcoming weekend being conference championship week, we’re looking at the possibilities of what teams could make the College Football Playoffs. Let’s take a look at the teams with the best chance at making the playoffs, and some possible scenarios that could make or break their season. That said, let’s jump right into action so you can get all set to make your bets against their NCAAF odds.

Updated College Football Playoffs Picture

Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama is currently sitting at the top of the College Football Playoff rankings. The Tide has been dominant this season, as they’ve beaten their opponents by an average of 32 points per game. Alabama has a date with Florida in the SEC Championship game. Florida had been playing well until they were upset by LSU last Saturday. Even if Alabama loses in the SEC title tilt, we still see them as one of the top four teams in the country, and they should still have a playoff spot.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Fighting Irish are at the #2 spot in this week’s rankings. Notre Dame will be in uncharted territory this weekend as they will be playing in their first ever conference championship game. The Irish will take on Clemson for the second time this season. The Irish defeated the Tigers 47-40 in double overtime in November. Unless they are blown out by Clemson, even with a loss, Notre Dame still stands a good chance at staying in the top four.

Clemson Tigers

This week’s third-rated spot in the playoff rankings goes to the Clemson Tigers. When the Tigers meet Notre Dame in the ACC Championship game on Saturday, they will not only be looking for revenge for their lone loss, they’ll also be looking for their sixth straight ACC title. Trevor Lawrence didn’t play in the first game, so that could be the main difference. Clemson would still have an argument for a top-four spot even if they lost to Notre Dame a second time. We’re not sure what the committee would do, but Clemson could sneak into the fourth spot.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State is fourth in the playoff standings at this point. The Buckeyes were unable to play last weekend due to COVID issues within the Michigan program. Since they couldn’t play, the Buckeyes were initially unable to play for the Big 10 title due to not playing the minimum number of games. However, the Big 10 changed their rule, and now the Buckeyes will play Northwestern in the Big 10 Championship game. With a convincing win, the Buckeyes should retain the fourth spot. If they lose, their playoff spot more than likely will go to someone else.

Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M needs lots of things to happen if they want to get into the top four. First off, they have to beat Tennessee this weekend. A loss to Tennessee halts any chance that they have of earning a playoff spot. They also need losses by Clemson and Ohio State. If Clemson were to lose and Ohio State wins, there’s still no guarantee that the Aggies end up in the top four.
