Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts may be a true freshman, but he plays nothing like one and has shown steady progress all season long with his passing and decision-making. Despite playing high school football just one year ago, Hurts is clearly the straw that stirs Alabama’s drink on offense. Hurts has completed an impressive 65.2 percent of his passes this season while throwing for 2,563 yards with 21 TD passes, but it is his manageable nine interceptions that has really impressed me, not to mention his ability to run the ball with the best quarterbacks in the country. As a dual-threat signal-caller, the fleet-footed freshman has rushed for a stunning 841 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging a healthy 5.2 yards per carry. Alabama is ranked 13th in scoring (40.5 ppg) this season – and that is largely due to the stellar play of freshman superstar Jalen Hurts.  

Coaching

Much like his polarizing team, college football fans everywhere either love head coach Nick Saban or despise him like a nagging mother-in-law. Still, there’s no denying the fact that he may be the best head coach in all of college football. Now in his 10th season at Alabama, Saban has compiled an insane 118-18 record while winning a quartet of national championships in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015. I know Saban constantly gets a handful of the best high school players in the country, but hey, some other elite programs get almost as many cream of the crop high schoolers and haven’t been able to come close to duplicating Saban’s success. No matter how you feel about him, Alabama has a decisive coaching edge with Nick Saban on the sideline.
