Early Projections for the 2024 College Football Playoff

The College Football Playoff released their first rankings last week. Ohio State was the top team followed by Georgia, Michigan, and Florida State.

All three teams remain unbeaten heading into College Football Week 11. But being unbeaten doesn’t mean you will stay unbeaten. There is plenty of football left to play.

1. Michigan Wolverines

Odds To Make CFB Playoffs: Yes -159 / NO +130

If the Wolverines can get by the Penn State Nittany Lions this Saturday, they should have a clear path to the CFP’s top seed.

Michigan will beat Maryland in College Football Week 12. Then in their final regular season game of the year, against Ohio State, the Wolverines should prevail. A win over Iowa Minnesota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Nebraska in the Big Ten Championship will ensure the Wolverines get the top seed at this season’s College Football Playoff.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide

Odds To Make CFB Playoffs: Yes +250 / NO -319

Surprised? Don’t be. Ever since head coach Nick Saban benched Jalen Milroe in a close Bama win over South Florida, the sophomore QB has responded.

This past Saturday, the Tide blasted their top rivals in the SEC West, the LSU Tigers. Alabama knocked out LSU star quarterback Jaylen Daniels. Then Milroe led Bama to a massive 42-28 victory.

Jalen passed for 219 yards, rushed for 155, and scored 4 rushing touchdowns. Milroe has gotten better week-to-week. By the time Alabama takes on Georgia in the SEC Championship, the Dawgs’ defense will struggle to stop Jalen.

Alabama will start their National Championship dreams in the College Football Playoff the second ranked team in the nation.

3. Oregon Ducks

Odds To Make CFB Playoffs: Yes -105 / NO -117

Since the loss to fifth-ranked Washington, Oregon has been on fire. The Ducks have a shot to beat a a ranked team, Oregon State, in 1 of their final 3 regular season contests.

Then in a projected rematch versus Washington in the Pac-12 Championship, the final Pac-12 title game in history since the conference disbands after this season, the Ducks should exact their revenge.

Overall, like most teams in the Pac-12 this season, Oregon has a much tougher schedule then many CFP contenders. The tough schedule and the revenge victory over Washington in the Pac-12 title contest carries Oregon to the College Football Playoff’s third seed.

4. Ohio State Buckeyes

Odds To Make CFB Playoffs: Yes +115 / NO -141

Before facing Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Buckeyes take on Michigan State and Minnesota. Ohio State won’t lose to either team.

So the Buckeyes should rank no worse than second when they battle rival Michigan. Although Ohio State won’t beat Michigan, the Bucks will manage a close loss. The loss will be close enough that the Selection Committee will have no choice but to hand the final College Football Playoff spot to Ohio State.

What’s wrong with Washington, Florida State, and Georgia?

Washington should lose at least 1 of their final 3 games. The Huskies take on 18-Utah, 16-Oregon State, and rival Washington State. A loss versus 1 of those 3 squads and then a loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship will end Washington’s College Football Playoff dreams.

Florida State will lose to Florida in their final game of the season. Then FSU will fall to Louisville in the ACC Championship. No team with 2 losses has ever made it to the College Football Playoff. It won’t happen this season, either.

Georgia could lose at Tennessee in their second to final game of the season. But even if the Dawgs run the table, they will fall to Alabama in the SEC Championship. The problem Georgia will have is that they’ve got one of the easiest schedules among any CFP contender. So if the Selection Committee must decide between a 1-loss Georgia team or a 1-loss Ohio State squad, the committee will go with the Buckeyes.
