Three college football games around the country on Friday night and by far the best team in action is No. 7 Cincinnati, which could crash the College Football Playoff, as the Bearcats host East Carolina in AAC action. UC is a big favorite on the NCAAF odds.

Last Meeting

Last year, East Carolina wasn’t very good and Cincinnati was excellent but the Pirates nearly upset the No. 17 Bearcats, who escaped with a 46-43 road win. Desmond Ridder threw for 161 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 146 more and led two scoring drives in the fourth quarter, including the winning drive in the final 1:10. Sam Crosa kicked a 32-yard field goal as time expired. The 24 1/2-point favorites trailed by 12 points with less than 9 minutes left. Michael Warren II rushed for 141 yards and matched a career high with three touchdown runs. Holton Ahlers threw for a school-record 535 yards and four TDs while rushing a score for the Pirates.

East Carolina leads the all-time series 13-10. Rather amazingly, Friday will mark the fourth time the two teams have met on November 13 (1997, 1999 and 2014).

The Pirates (1-5) are decent offensively this year but awful on defense. They come off a 38-21 home loss to Tulane last Saturday. The Green Wave never trailed and rushed for 277 yards. The Green Wave out-gained the Pirates 493-386 and each team turned the ball over just once.

In the loss, sophomore receiver Blake Proehl enjoyed a career day, finishing with a personal-best 182 yards and two touchdowns on 13 catches. Cameron Carroll notched a pair of touchdowns as the game’s leading rusher, collecting 129 yards on six carries. Quarterback Holton Ahlers went 27-for-43 with 351 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The 351 yards were a season-high and Ahlers now owns 10 career 300-yard passing games. He has thrown a TD pass in 19 of 27 career games and has accounted for 57 career touchdowns (45 passing, 12 rushing. A total of 32 of his 45 passing TDs have gone for 10 or more yards (8 of 12/2018, 15 of 21/2019, 9 of 12/2020).

ECU extended its current streak without being shutout to 284 games (a school record). The time the Pirates were blanked was on Oct. 4, 1997 (56-0 at Syracuse). Since becoming a conference member in 1997, East Carolina is 58-93 (.384) when playing away from Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
