Five Fearless College Football Betting Predictions for ACC in 2019

Mack Attack!

It’s a great story that North Carolina hired Mack Brown a whopping 21 years after he led the program at UNC from 1988-1997, but I’m thinking the now, 67-year-old after being out of the game since resigning as the head coach at Texas following the 2013 season. Mack Brown returns to lead a Tar Heels program that went an awful 2-9 in their final year under former head coach Larry Fedora last season and just 5-18 over the last two seasons. I know Brown led Texas to the 2005 national championship and that he’s one of the most respected head coaches in recent college football history, but again, I think five years away from the game, combined with the fact that he won eight games or less in three of his final four season with the Longhorns, suggest today’s modern version of college football has passed him by. North Carolina wins, at best, six games in 2019!

Virginia Snaps Skid Against In-State Rivals!

The last time Virginia beat Virginia Tech in their annual Commonwealth Clash showdown, I was a young lad riding the horse and buggy wagon to elementary school with Abe Lincoln. Okay, okay, while I’m not that old, and I’m clearly exaggerating for effect, the Cavaliers haven’t defeated the Hokies since 2003. Now though, after suffering a crushing 34-31 overtime loss against their in-state rivals last season, I believe Virginia is poised to get the big victory when the two teams meet in the final week of the 2019 regular season.

Cavs head coach Bronco Mendenhall has an experienced defense and a gifted quarterback in Bryce Perkins, plus they finished with a better record that Virginia Tech last season. Yep, I’ve got Virginia finally snapping their lengthy losing streak against Virginia Tech this coming season.

Free Willie!

Florida State went an awful 5-7 in their first year under former Oregon head coach Willie Taggart last season and while the news coming out of Tallahassee is that all signs are pointing upward for the Seminoles as they get set for the upcoming 2019 season, I don’t believe it one iota. Yes, Taggart brought in former Houston offensive coordinator Kendal Briles to help improve an offense that saw difficult to watch a year ago, but this is still a program that has too many question marks on both sides of the ball for my taste.

Not only that, but I’m also not overly fond of Taggart’s coaching ability, seeing as how he’s just 52-57 in his career. Yeah….I’m expecting the Seminoles to win six games and maybe seven – at best!

Syracuse Shines Again!

After going an identical 4-8 in each of his first two seasons, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers led the Orange to a fantastic 10-3 mark a year ago and now things are looking up for the ACC title hopefuls heading into 2019. Quarterback Tommy DeVito is talented and only going to get better with each passing game. In addition to that, Syracuse also returns seven starters on defense, including senior edge rushers Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman who both recorded double-digit-sack seasons a year ago.

While I’m not expecting ‘Cuse to upset mighty Clemson when they host their conference rivals at the  Carrier Dome on Sept. 14, I think it’s quite feasible that the Orange could approach 10 wins again in 2019, although I’m thinking the figure will more likely be eight or nine victories.

Clemson Runs Table Again!

The now, perennially-powerful Clemson Tigers are the reigning national champions and have claimed two of the last three national champion trophies while appearing in three of the last four title tilts. Still, Dabo Swinney’s program had never run the table with an unblemished record until they did so by going a perfect 15-0 last season. Prior to their 12-2 mark in 2017, Clemson unfurled consecutive 14-1 records to reach the 2015 national championship while winning it all in 2016.

However, as they get set for the upcoming 2019 regular season, I’ve looked high and low to find a good reason – any reason actually – to locate a Tigers loss this coming campaign. Unfortunately for their opponents, I just don’t see it happening with the Aggies’ toughest matchups being a home date against Texas A&M and a season-ending road date at South Carolina. Clemson runs the table for the second straight season college football betting buffs!
