Why Florida Will Top Their Win Total Odds?
Florida returns starting quarterback Feleipe Franks and that’s encouraging in and of itself seeing as how the Gators senior signal-caller had his best season ever a year ago by completing 58.4 percent of his passes for 2,457 yards with 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
The Gators also return seven starters on the defensive side of the ball from a unit that finished 20t nationally in points allowed (20.0 ppg). Florida has a pair of future NFL performers in cornerbacks CJ Henderson, Marco Wilson and some other elite talent on their hungry defense.
Combine that with the fact that Florida has one of the best offensive minds in all of college football in head coach Dan Mullen and the Gators have the look of a team ready to record consecutive double-digit winning campaigns for the first time since they went an identical 13-1 in 2008 and 2009 under former championship-winning head coach Urban Meyer.
Now, thanks to Mullen, Florida’s players have a brand new mindset as he looks to get the program back into the national championship mix.
“We’re the Florida Gators,” Mullen said last October. “That’s what the standard is here, is greatness. That’s what we want from these guys.”
Last but not least, the Gators have some elite talent at the skill positions, starting with 2018 rushing leader, Lamical Perine and extending on to senior wideout Van Jefferson, sure-handed receiver Kadarius Toney and 6-foot-5, 210-pound wide receiver Trevon Grimes.
Why Florida Won’t Top Their Win Total Odds?
There are a handful of good reasons to back Florida to come up short of topping their win total odds in 2019. First, the Gators lost four starters on the offensive line who made a combined 141 starts. Then, there’s the fact that, while Franks had his best season under center, he’s really not the kind of quarterback that is suited to a lot of passing game success.
Another reason the Gators might struggle in 2019 is the fact that they certainly won’t sneak up on anyone after last season’s breakout campaign. Assistant coach John Hevesy told his offensive linemen this spring that things were going to get more difficult for the Gators moving forward.
“He said it’s a lot easier to go from four wins to 10 wins than it is from 10 to 11,” redshirt freshman guard Christopher Bleich says.
Last but not least, Florida has a difficult SEC schedule awaiting them for the upcoming season.
Prediction
It’s nice that Dan Mullen became just the third coach to lead a Power 5 team to 10 wins after it had won fewer than five the prior season, but the Gators have difficult home matchups against Auburn, Georgia and their annual matchup against in-state rival Florida State as well as tough road dates at Miami, LSU and South Carolina.
I’m going with the Gators to suffer three regular season losses to finish at 9-3, although if I had to lean one way or the other, I’d have to say I’d pick eight victories over 10.
