The Miami Hurricanes lost their season opener soundly to LSU, but their College Football Playoff hopes aren’t over. The No. 17 Canes have to win out, though, and they are soundly favored on the NCAAF odds to keep rolling Saturday against rival Florida State.

Last Season
Miami ended a seven-game losing streak in the series last year with a wild 24-20 win in Tallahassee. Malik Rosie drove Miami 75 yards in nine plays, throwing a 23-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Langham with 6 seconds left for the win. Florida State had taken a 20-17 lead with 1:24 remaining on James Blackman’s 20-yard pass to Auden Tate.
Rosier was 19 of 44 for 254 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Blackman finished 17 of 28 for 203 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Cam Akers had his first 100-yard rushing game with 129 yards on 14 carries. Both Rosier and Blackman are backups now.
Why Bet on FSU?
The Seminoles rallied for a 28-24 win at Louisville last Saturday. FSU seemed dead to rights a few times in that game, including when the Cardinals converted a short third down with a seven-yard pass to FSU’s 19-yard line with two minutes remaining. But for some reason, Louisville then tried a pass and it was picked off. That led to Deondre Francois’ game-winning 58-yard TD pass to Nyqwan Murray. It was the last of a career-high four touchdowns for Francois, who completed 16 of 27 passes for 294 yards. The redshirt junior wasn’t sacked and didn’t throw an interception for the first time this season.
It was the second time in three trips to Louisville that the Seminoles have come back from 21-7 halftime deficits. In 2014, Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston and Dalvin Cook led FSU to a 35-10 second half to win 42-31.
FSU’s four-team sacks tied a season high. FSU’s defense has at least three sacks in four of five games this season. FSU’s seven tackles for loss tied a season high (also vs. Virginia Tech and Syracuse). Freshman linebacker DeCalon Brooks was named the ACC co-Linebacker of the Week. Brooks was all over the field in his third career start, leading FSU’s linebacking corps with nine tackles, a sack, a quarterback hurry, one forced fumble and a pair of tackles for loss. Brooks is FSU’s first ACC Linebacker of the Week since Jacob Pugh won the award in October 2015.
FSU is one of four FBS teams that have not allowed a 4th-down conversion this season as opponents are 0-for-6 on 4th down. The six 4th-down attempts faced without allowing a conversion are the most in the nation.
Florida State has won eight of the last 10 matchups against the Hurricanes and has won six in a row at Miami. The Seminoles have won seven straight games in Hard Rock Stadium, including every game against the Hurricanes since they moved into the stadium in 2008 and Orange Bowl victories over Northern Illinois on Jan. 1, 2013, and Michigan on Dec. 30, 2016.
Why Bet on Miami?
The Canes are on extra rest after thumping North Carolina 47-10 last Thursday. Miami tied a school record with three defensive touchdowns, and redshirt freshman N’Kosi Perry threw for a score in his first career start. Romeo Finley and Joe Jackson ran back interceptions for scores, Jonathan Garvin scooped up a fumble and rumbled in for another touchdown and the Hurricanes wound up forcing six turnovers in all.
Deejay Dallas rushed 11 times for 114 yards and a touchdown for the Hurricanes, whose 12th straight home regular-season win matches the school’s longest in 15 years.
It has been 13 years since Miami’s Frank Gore took a handoff from quarterback Brock Berlin, cut to the right and sprinted into the end zone at the Orange Bowl to beat Florida State, 16-10, in overtime on Sept. 11, 2004. That was UM’s last home win vs. FSU. There were close games in 2006, 2008, 2014 and 2016.
The Canes are a bit banged up. Miami HC Mark Richt said there’s a chance that junior WR Ahmmon Richards, a freshman All-American two years ago, could redshirt. Richards has missed four consecutive games with a bone bruise on his knee and remains sidelined indefinitely. With the NCAA’s new four-game redshirt rule, Richards could play in the regular season finale, the ACC title game (if the Hurricanes qualified) and a bowl game and still redshirt.
Miami senior Jaquan Johnson is practicing this week. The star safety is tracking toward a return on Saturday. Johnson has been sidelined since injuring his hamstring in the first half of the win at Toledo two weeks ago. Top linebacker Shaquille Quarterman also is practicing after leaving the UNC game with an ankle injury. Johnson and Quarterman are both future NFL players so they are definitely needed.
