If Georgia can make it 3 in a row, Beck might be in the Heisman conversation, but he is not among the favorites right now. We are not denying how talented Williams is, but we have to say that it is a little surprising to see him in as the favorite to win the Heisman in back-to-back seasons. The reason we say that is because Archie Griffin is the only player to have ever won the award twice, with that coming back in the 1970s. Williams is coming off a great season with USC and will be looking to impress pro scouts who will be clamoring to get him on their NFL team at next season’s draft. He may be the favorite, but I still think he is a longshot, if that makes sense.

There were some who thought that Travis might declare for the NFL Draft after an excellent season under center for the Florida State Seminoles, but he quickly announced that he would be returning for his 5th season. I think this might be a smart move, as he will almost certainly see his stock rise if he can post similar numbers, or perhaps even better, to what he did last season. I think he does need to improve upon his TD totals if he is to win this prestigious award.

After toiling away as the QB for the Indiana Hoosiers for 4 seasons, Penix Jr. transferred to Washington last season and saw his career take a huge uptick. He led the Huskies to an impressive 11-2 record, throwing for over 4,600 yards and 31 TD. His numbers across the board were a huge improvement on anything he had done during his time with the Hoosiers, with many now adopting a wait and see attitude in terms of his being able to match or improve on those stats.

Betting Pick: +1375

After throwing just 10 passes for the UNC Tar Heels in the 2021 season, Maye was handed the reins last year, and you have to say that he took full advantage of the opportunity. Maye led his team to a 9-5 record, throwing for over 4,300 yards. He had 38 TD passes versus just 7 INT, and there is a definite sense that he is only going to get better in his second full season under center for the Tar Heels. For me, he might well be the one to take a chance on, especially at these odds, as we will see them shorten for sure if he comes out of the gate quickly this season.

Heisman Trophy Betting Favorites and Odds Update 2022 | NCAA Football Lines

We are in a little bit of a lull in the world of college football now that the regular season and the conference championship games are all done and dusted. Next up is bowl season, which gets rolling in a little under 2 weeks from now. We will have a ton of bowl coverage coming your way, as well as previews of the playoff games and the teams taking part. Even though there is some time until we get to the postseason, there is still some other business to attend to, starting with the Heisman Trophy. There appears to be a rather clear favorite, but let’s take a look at the current Heisman Trophy Betting Odds.

Caleb Williams (-2500)

The USC Trojans QB is the front runner for the Heisman, but you have to say that it was a disappointing end to the season for him and his team. The Trojans lost to the Utah Utes in the PAC-12 Championship Game, with Williams picking up a hamstring injury that may well keep him out of the upcoming bowl game. That aside, Williams threw for over 4,000 yards and37 TDs against just 4 INT. Those are certainly Heisman type numbers, especially compared to the competition.

Max Duggan (+2000)

The TCU Horned Frogs have been one of the feel-good stories of the year, and you have to say that QB Max Duggan is a big part of the reason why TCU are in the playoffs. Even though they came up short in the Big 12 Conference Championship Game, Duggan took the team on his shoulders in the 4^th quarter and almost singlehandedly go them to OT before eventually coming up a half-yard short. His numbers are not as good as Williams’’, but you could argue that he means more to his team, who might not be where they are without him.

Stetson Bennett (+3300)

For years now, the Georgia Bulldogs have been a team that consistently runs the football and who have a group of backs that are truly brilliant. That said, Bennett has played an integral part in leading the Bulldogs to back-to-back unbeaten regular seasons, an SEC Conference Championship, and a National Championship. Not too shabby for a guy that most football fans outside of Athens wrote off. Still, his numbers this season simply don’t compare to the guys ahead of him here, which makes him a longshot to win.

CJ Stroud (+5000) and Bryce Young (+10000)

Winning the Heisman Trophy in back-to-back seasons is a total longshot, and it seems like we won’t see it happen here. Bryce Young had another great season for Alabama but missing the playoffs has probably sealed his fate. It may not be fair, but that’s how it goes. Stroud tied Williams for TD passes this season with 37, but he is behind him in most of the other QB categories. He did, though, lead his team to the playoffs, although they got in via the back door after USC lost in the PAC-12 Conference Championship Game. Both of these guys would very much appear to be longshots at best.

With the season less than a month away, it’s time to start looking at who could be in contention for the prestigious award. C.J. Stroud +250

The Ohio State quarterback is the favorite to win this year’s Heisman Trophy. The Buckeyes should have one of the top offenses in the country, as Stroud has some of the nation’s top offensive weapons at his disposal. With the Buckeyes looking to be in contention for a National Championship, all eyes will be on Stroud this season.

Last season, he threw for over 4400 yards and 44 touchdowns as a true freshman. We’ll see if he can improve upon those numbers this season. If he does, it will be hard not to give him a Heisman vote.

Bryce Young +350

Last year’s Heisman trophy winner is looking to be only the second person in the history of the Heisman to win the award twice. Ohio State’s Archie Griffin is the only person to ever win the award twice. Young’s Alabama Crimson Tide are the favorites to win the National Championship this season. He’ll be playing in many high-profile games against some of the top defenses in the country.

Young threw for nearly 4900 yards with 47 touchdowns last season. He’ll need to have a season much like last season or even better if he wants to win the Heisman. We’ll see if Young and the Alabama offense has it in them.

Caleb Williams +800

When Caleb Williams took over as the quarterback of the Oklahoma Sooners, he lit a fire under the Sooner program. The electric quarterback is one of the best athletes in the country, and can do damage with his arm and his legs. He was a perfect fit for Lincoln Riley’s offense.

When Riley left for USC, Williams decided to follow the head coach to sunny California. Jordan Addison, one of the top receivers in the country, left Pitt and is also headed to USC. He’ll be a huge asset for Williams. With Addison, and many other top skill position players, Riley’s offense should be able to put up a ton of points, and that will help Williams’s Heisman case.

Bijan Robinson +2000

It’s fair to say that the oddsmakers think that the award will go to one of the nation’s top quarterbacks again this season, as Bijan Robinson at a +2000, is the top non-quarterback among the favorites.

Robinson is one of the best backs in the country, and he should thrive once again in Steve Sarkisian’s offense. With Quinn Ewers under center, teams shouldn’t be able to key on Robinson like they did last season. He should touch the ball between 20 and 30 times per game, and he’ll be able to make things happen if he gets that many touches.

The Early Season Favorites

CJ Stroud – Ohio State +260

Stroud put up some huge numbers last season, and Ohio State’s offense could be even stronger this season. Stroud was in contention all season long, but with Bryce Young finishing the season on a hot streak, and the loss to Michigan, Stroud fell just short

In the final three games of last season, Stroud threw for nearly 1200 yards, with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions. Stroud is also very good when he leaves the pocket. Even though he lost some key receivers from last year’s team, the outlook for this season could be even better.

Ohio State has some great receivers coming in with the freshman class, and Stroud still has star tailback TreVeyon Henderson at his disposal. After last year’s disappointing loss to Michigan, which eliminated them from playoff contention, Stroud and the Buckeyes will be back with a vengeance. Look for big things from Stroud and the OSU offense this season.

Bryce Young – Alabama +650

How does last season’s Heisman winner not have better odds you ask? Well, for one, there has only been one person to win the Heisman twice, and that was Ohio State running back Archie Griffin in 1974 & 1975. It’s very hard to repeat, especially when teams will key their preparation on stopping you.

Young will once again have a great arsenal of weapons to throw to. Last season he threw for nearly 4800 yards with 47 touchdowns. Although he lost some key offensive pieces, the Crimson Tide never rebuild, they just reload. And they have once again reloaded with some very talented players.

Alabama will once again have a backfield loaded with five-star prospects, and they’ve brought in some five-star wide receivers to replace the departed ones. Young will be surrounded by talented skill players, and should have one of the top offensive lines in the country to protect him. He has been set up well to have a great shot at winning another Heisman Trophy.

Keep Your Eyes on this Sleeper

Quinn Ewers – University of Texas +4000

Ewers was the top quarterback prospect heading into last season. He enrolled early at Ohio State, but with CJ Stroud in his way, Ewers decided to head back home and go to Texas to play for Steve Sarkisian.

Sarkisian has done a great job of building a great offense through recruiting and the transfer portal. Bijan Robinson will also be back to lead the backfield. Ewers will have no shortage of weapons at his disposal.

The pressure will be on Ewers to have a great season, as he knows that if he doesn’t play well, that Arch Manning will be headed to Texas the following season and could very well replace him. If you want to take a longshot, Ewers could earn you a lot of bang for your buck.

CJ Stroud and Kenny Pickett have a problem. It’s not that either quarterback had a bad season. But neither plays for a College Football Playoff squad.

The Ohio State Buckeyes failed to even make it to their conference championship game. The disappointing season wasn’t Stroud’s fault. The freshman QB threw for 3,865 yards and 38 touchdowns to just 5 interceptions.

But because Ohio State didn’t play good enough to make the CFP, Stroud has no shot of winning the award.

Neither does Pickett, who plays for the ACC Champions. Pittsburgh easily beat Wake Forest in the ACC title game. Pickett has been unbelievable this season. The senior threw for 4,319 yards and 42 TDs.

But Pitt isn’t near the level of the favorite’s squad, Alabama. Bryce Young has had one of the most fantastic seasons in college football history.

Young threw for 4,322 yards. He tossed 42 TD passes. He rushed for another 3 TDs this season. But that’s not the only reason Young is such a big favorite.

Versus then #1 Georgia in the SEC Championship, Young displayed the skills and leadership a player requires to lead his team to the National Championship. He blitzed the Dawgs with 421 passing yards and 3 TD passes.

Young also rushed for 40 yards and a TD. There’s a reason Young is a -10000 choice to win the Heisman. He’s the best player in college football and a virtual lock to win the trophy.

There’s no reason not to make Bryce Young the top choice. If you can’t get yourself to lay money on a 10,000-to-1 shot, then you should consider backing the Michigan defensive end.

Aidan Hutchinson has recorded 33 solo tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 14 sacks this season. His presence on the Wolverines’ defense is one of the primary reasons Jim Harbaugh’s squad is in the CFP.

Hutchinson can change the course of a game at any moment. He’s that good. So if you’re not comfortable laying the farm on Young, consider Hutchinson the top alternative.

Bryce Young, Quarterback, Alabama Crimson Tide – (+185)

Young topped this list five weeks ago, and the sophomore quarterback maintains his spot atop the odds board. The sophomore has kept the Crimson Tide offense rolling after the graduation of so many key players from last season’s championship team.

Young has thrown for 2,755 yards with 28 touchdowns and just three interceptions in his first season under center. He is completing 69.4% of his passes and leading the fourth-ranked scoring offense in the nation.

Kenneth Walker III, Running Back, Michigan State Spartans – (+300)

The biggest riser over the last month, Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III, has shot up the board and asserted himself as one of the top running backs in the nation. Walker helped the Spartans to eight-straight victories to start the season and a top-5 ranking before falling last week to Purdue.

The junior rusher has carried the ball 198 times for 1,340 yards, averaging 6.8 yards per carry, and has found the endzone 15 times. Walker leads the nation in rushing yards and tenth in yards per carry.

Matt Corral, Quarterback, Ole Miss Rebels – (+450)

Matt Corral was the hottest name in college football over the first month of the season but has cooled off recently. Corral has been banged up over the last few weeks but still has the Rebels at 7-2 and third in the SEC West.

Ole Missis 16th in the nation in scoring and 21st in passing offense. Corral has thrown 16 touchdowns to a pair of picks and is the team’s leading rusher with 528 yards and ten touchdowns.

CJ Stroud, Quarterback, Ohio State Buckeyes – (+450)

Another riser, the true freshman Stroud has taken command of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offense that second in the nation in scoring. Stroud went on a four-game stretch where he threw 15 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Stroud is second in the Big Ten this season with 2,675 yards passing and leads the conference with 25 passing touchdowns. Stroud is the first of two true freshman quarterbacks to be in the Heisman conversation after two in a half months of play.

Caleb Williams, Quarterback, Oklahoma Sooners – (+850)

Five weeks ago, OU quarterback Spencer Rattler was on this list as one of the top playmakers in college football. Freshman Caleb Williams stepped in for Rattler and hasn’t given back the starting duties since.

Williams led the Oklahoma Sooners back against the Longhorns and is 3-0 as a starter under center. He’s thrown 14 touchdowns with one pick and has added four rushing touchdowns for good measure.

Which players among JT Daniels, Spencer Rattler, Bryce Young, D.J. Uiagalelei, and Sam Howell Jr. offers overlay odds to win the Heisman?

The odds on Rattler and Young are too low. Rattler played great in his first season as Oklahoma‘s quarterback. But the Sooner doesn’t have the wheels that Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray had.

Bryce Young takes over for Mac Jones. It’s difficult seeing Young having the same success and, lest we forget, Jones didn’t win the Heisman. His wide receiver, DeVonta Smith, did.

There’s nothing wrong with JT Daniels. But JT is the Georgia Bulldogs’ quarterback. Kirby Smart prefers to rush the ball. Daniels won’t get as many chances to show his stuff as Young or Rattler.

That leaves us with D.J. Uiagalelei and Sam Howell Jr. Both play in the less than deep ACC. Of the two, Uiagalelei has the better chance of striking Heisman gold. D.J. plays for the Clemson Tigers.

The Tigers battle Georgia in their first game. If Uiagalelei can dominate the Top 5 ranked Bulldogs, he immediately becomes the Heisman front runner.

Not counting Bryce Young and JT Daniels, which SEC player has the best chance of winning the award?

Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr. has a shot because Bama may not pass as much with Bryce Young at quarterback. Robinson Jr. could become a workhorse ala Derrick Henry in 2015.

The real SEC player to consider is Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral. It will be Corral’s second season in Lane Kiffin’s system. Alabama, LSU, and Auburn are on the Rebels’ schedule, which means Corral will have plenty of chances to prove he’s Heisman worthy.

What two players with odds between +1400 and +2900 have legitimate shots of winning the Heisman?

We must take D’Eriq King’s chances seriously. The Miami quarterback has skills for days. But the best pick in this odds range is Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy should be in plenty of shootouts. Texas, West Virginia, and Oklahoma are on the Cyclones schedule, which means, like Corral at Ole Miss, Purdy has chances to prove he deserves the award.

Are there any players at +3000 or higher who can win the Heisman?

Before an injury Michael Penix Jr. had dominated opponents. If the Indiana Hoosiers quarterback returns one-hundred percent, Penix Jr. will have a shot.

Indiana plays against Iowa, Penn State, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Michigan. If Penix Jr. can lead the Hoosiers to wins over all those historically good teams, especially, Michigan and Ohio State, it may be hard to keep him from grabbing the Heisman.

The Heisman Trophy for the 2020 college football season will be given out virtually Tuesday night on ESPN, and it seems all but a formality that Alabama’s DeVonta Smith will take home the award as he’s a -2000 favorite on the NCAAF odds. Smith would become the first Tide receiver to win the Heisman and first wideout overall to take it since Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide are in the Jan. 11 national championship game against No. 3 Ohio State and early 7.5-point favorites. In the 31-14 semifinal win over No. 4 Notre Dame, Smith was unstoppable again with seven catches for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

Alabama extended its school record for consecutive games with a score to 267 thanks to Smith’s 26-yard receiving touchdown on the Crimson Tide’s opening drive against No. 4 Notre Dame. The Crimson Tide were last held off the scoreboard in a 9-0 loss to Auburn on Nov. 18, 2000. Alabama has a 212-55 (.794) record over the course of the current streak.

Smith leads the nation in receptions with 105, receiving yards with 1,641 and receiving touchdowns with 20. His eight 100-plus yard performances this year give him 13 for his career as he entered his senior campaign with five in hand. Smith totaled two in 2018 and followed that up with three as a junior a season ago. His 13 100-plus yard performances ties DJ Hall (2004-07) for the second-most in Alabama history.

Smith has totaled 3,750 receiving yards in his Crimson Tide career. That total not only ranks atop the Alabama records but ranks second overall in SEC history. Smith’s 130 yards against Notre Dame put him within nine yards of tying Vanderbilt’s Jordan Matthews (2010-13) who had 3,759 yards for the all-time conference record.

Smith’s quarterback Jones is the +500 second-favorite to win the Heisman. With 4,036 passing yards this season, Jones moved into the top spot on the UA single-season passing yards list. Jones passed Tua Tagovailoa, who had been No. 1 with 3,966 yards in 2018. Jones is just the fifth quarterback in school history to throw for 3,000 yards in a season and is the first to go over 4,000 yards.

Jones threw for four touchdown passes against Notre Dame to total 36 touchdowns through the air this season. Jones’ 36 touchdowns rank as the second-most in a single season in program history. Only Tagovailoa has thrown more touchdowns for Alabama in a single season with 43 in 2018.

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence is +1200 and his college career is finished after the Tigers were upset by Ohio State in the semifinals 49-28. Lawrence fell to 34-2 for his career as Clemson’s starting quarterback while throwing for 400 yards on 33-for-48 passing.

“This was just one of those nights we — yeah, we could have used a few more stops for sure, but they kind of needed us to pick them up,” Lawrence said. “And there were a few times we weren’t just playing complementary football for too long. When we’re punting and they’re scoring pretty much every drive for a quarter, it can get out of hand quick.

Lawrence is a lock to go No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars – who might be hiring Urban Meyer as their next coach. Doug Marrone as expected was fired Monday.

The fourth Heisman finalist is Florida QB Kyle Trask, who is +5000. His NCAA career ended in a 55-20 blowout loss to Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. Trask completed 16-of-28 passes for 158 yards and three interceptions in the loss. The absence of his three best offensive weapons — Kyle Pitts, Trevon Grimes and Karadius Toney — clearly had a detrimental effect on Florida’s passing attack. Even so, the redshirt senior signal caller could not get on the same page with his receivers, throwing two early interceptions that resulted in touchdowns for the Sooners.

Trask broke the single-season school record for passing yards per game (356.9), narrowly finishing ahead of Rex Grossman’s 2001 season (354.2). Trask’s average of 356.9 passing yards per game also ranks third in SEC history, only trailing LSU’s Joe Burrow (378.1 in 2019) and Kentucky’s Tim Couch (388.6 in 1998). Trask finished with 7,386 career passing yards, which ranks eighth on Florida’s career records list. Trask also should be a first-round pick in the 2021 draft.

No player from Wake Forest has ever come close to winning the Heisman Trophy – so at least Jamie Newman gave himself a chance at the award in 2020 by transferring from Wake to UGA.

Newman attended Graham High School in Graham, North Carolina. He was a four-year starter at quarterback and picked Wake Forest over Syracuse. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Newman was rated three stars by most major recruiting services and also had offers from Vanderbilt, Duke, West Virginia, North Carolina State and Boston College.

Newman redshirted his true freshman season at Wake Forest and then played just 22 snaps as a redshirt freshman in 2017. The next season, Newman began the year as the backup to Sam Hartman, but he broke his leg in an early September game vs. Syracuse and Newman would go 3-1 as a starter.

In his first career start at No. 14 NC State on Nov. 8, 2018, Newman led the Deacons to come-from-behind 27-23 win with game-winning 2-minute drill. He hit Jack Freudenthal with a 32-yard pass with 30 seconds left. Newman would finish 22-for-33 passing for 297 yard and three scores. He became the third QB in school history to throw three TD passes in first career start, joining Keith West vs Vanderbilt (1990) and Norm Snead vs. Maryland (1958). Newman had the second-most passing yards ever by a Wake Forest QB in first career start, trailing only Sam Hartman (378 vs. Tulane, 2018).

Last year, Newman was the clear-cut starter as Wake finished 8-5 following a loss to Michigan State in the Pinstripe Bowl. Newman completed 12-of-27 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in what would prove to be his final game at Wake Forest. Newman, who had to leave the game late in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury, was also Wake Forest’s rushing leader as he accounted for 87 yards on 17 carries.

For the season, Newman completed 60.9 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. Newman also rushed for 574 yards and six touchdowns. He finished second in the ACC in total offense yards per game at 286.8, was fifth in the ACC in passing yards per game at 239.0 and fourth in passing efficiency with a 145.3 rating.

Newman’s 227.9 career total offense yards per game is school record and 19th in ACC history and 286.8 season total offense yards per game is second-best. His 142.7 career passing efficiency is 18th in ACC history. Newman set a Wake Forest record by throwing a touchdown pass in 12 consecutive games including the final four games of 2018 and the first eight games of 2019. His 2,868 passing yards were fourth-most in a season and his 26 touchdown passes tied for the second-most in a season. Newman’s 35 career TD passes are fifth-most in school history.

For whatever reason, Newman then decided to transfer and Georgia beat out Oregon, Washington, Maryland and Miami. Newman announced his decision two days after 2019 Dawgs starter Jake Fromm declared for the 2020 NFL draft. The Bulldogs other scholarship quarterbacks are former walk-on Stetson Bennett, redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis and early enrollee freshman Carson Beck.

“I am excited about joining such a great football program under the leadership of Coach [Kirby] Smart and offensive coordinator Coach [James] Coley,” Newman said. “I believe in UGA’s amazing staff, great football program, and the passionate fans supporting this team.”

Newman has spent part of the offseason working out with former UGA quarterback and current Ohio State star Justin Fields, among others. Even with the exit of Fromm, star running back D’Andre Swift and most of the offensive line, Georgia enters the 2019 season as the favorite to repeat in the SEC East.

Georgia does have a new offensive coordinator this season in Todd Monken. He was on the same role last year with the Cleveland Browns, and new Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t retain him. UGA was fifth in the SEC in scoring (30.8 points per game), total offense (408.1 yards), passing (223.0) and rushing (185.1) last year.

The Dawgs open the season Sept. 7 in Atlanta vs. Virginia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

Fields played at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Georgia. In two years as a starter, totaled 4,187 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns, 2,096 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns. Before his 2017 senior year, Fields attended the Elite 11 quarterback competition and was named MVP of the event.

Fields was rated as a five-star recruit and was the highest rated dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2018 but the No. 2 overall recruit behind another Georgia quarterback: Trevor Lawrence. He nearly committed to the University of Georgia but picked Clemson and is the Heisman favorite this year.

Fields originally committed to Penn State out of high school before ultimately decommitting because he thought that then-Lions offensive coordinator Joe Morehead would leave (he did). Fields then committed to Georgia over LSU. One of his sisters also committed to play softball at Georgia.

Fields played in 12 of 14 games as a true freshman for Georgia in 2018 and was named to the coaches’ freshman All-SEC Team. He completed 27 of 39 passes for 328 yards and four TDs and also had four rushing touchdowns.

However, with Fields stuck behind Jake Fromm on the depth chart he decided to leave for Ohio State. Fromm took the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoff national title game as a freshman and the SEC title game as a sophomore.

Normally, Fields would have sat out 2019. However, during his freshman year at Georgia, Fields was the subject of a racist comment from UBA baseball player Adam Sasser. The comment was made during Georgia’s win over Tennessee on Sept. 29, which gave the freshman QB and his attorney, grounds to file for a waiver that Fields should be able to transfer without an eligibility penalty.

The baseball player was dismissed from the team, but Fields said he would have felt uncomfortable playing baseball at Georgia because of the incident. The NCAA would grant the waiver.

With Dwayne Haskins off to the NFL after his record-breaking 2018 season at Ohio State, Fields stepped right in and filled those big shoes. He had one of the greatest seasons in the history of Ohio State when he completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 3,273 yards while accounting for 51 touchdowns (41 passing, 10 rushing).

Fields became the first quarterback in Big Ten history with 40 passing TDs and 10 rushing TDs in the same season and his 41-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio was the best in the country. Fields’ passer efficiency rating of 181.43 was third best nationally.

Fields became just the third Ohio State quarterback in the last 50 years – Rex Kern and Craig Krenzel are the others – to win each of his first 13 games as the Buckeyes’ starting QB. In six games against teams ranked in the final College Football Playoff poll, accounted for 17 touchdowns and averaged 280 yards per game of total offense.

Alas, his Buckeyes lost to Lawrence’s Clemson team in the CFP semifinals. Fields completed 30-of-46 passes for 320 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the loss. Fields also ran for 13 yards with a long of 21. He was dealing with somewhat of a knee injury suffered in the regular-season finale.

Fields would win Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Quarterback of the Year Awards, was first-team All-Big Ten, second-team All-American and third in the Heisman voting. The 6-foot-3, 233-pounder posted a 1.66 WAA (wins above average) for the Buckeyes, and that was second only to Heisman winner Joe Burrow last year.

Fields should be a very high NFL draft pick in 2021, with ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. ranking Fields as his No. 3 overall prospect in the prospective 2021 class. Ohio State opens at home on Sept. 5 vs. Bowling Green and will be a mammoth favorite.

Lawrence attended and played football for Cartersville High School in Georgia, where he was considered to be among the best quarterback prospects of all time. Via 247Sports, he was ranked not just the No. 1 overall player in the Class of 2018 but the No. 6 overall recruit ever by that site.

From his sophomore year to his senior year, Lawrence led Cartersville to 41 straight victories, winning two state championships and numerous national high school player of the year honors. Lawrence finished with 13,908 passing yards and 161 touchdowns against 21 interceptions in his career and set state records for passing yards and passing touchdowns that were previously held by Deshaun Watson of Gainesville High.

Of course, Watson also went to Clemson and is an NFL star right now, and most expect Lawrence to be the top pick in the 2021 draft. His combination of size (6-foot-6), athleticism, accuracy and intelligence makes him a near lock for success at the next level.

Thanks to UGA coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs made a ferocious late run at Lawrence, finishing runner-up to only Clemson. When Lawrence was going through the critical early stages of the recruiting process, Mark Richt was still Georgia’s coach and his offensive coordinator was Brian Schottenheimer. Clemson and Dabo Swinney recruited Lawrence much harder at an earlier date while Richt’s staff was focused more on other QB targets.

As touted as Lawrence was, he began the 2018 season as the backup to Kelly Bryant, but when Bryant struggled fairly early on Lawrence took over and never looked back in leading Clemson to the national championship. In that title game upset of Alabama, Lawrence earned Offensive MVP after completing 20 of 32 passes for 347 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, becoming the first freshman starting quarterback to lead his team to a national title since Oklahoma’s Jamelle Holieway in 1985.

Including a rout of Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinal, Lawrence became the first quarterback in 40 years to beat two Top-5 opponents by 25 or more points in a single season. Lawrence would be named a Freshman All-American, ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year. He completed 259-397 passes for 3,280 yards with 30 touchdowns and four interceptions in 768 snaps in 15 games (11 starts), while also contributing 60 carries for 177 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He set school freshman records in passing yards, passing touchdowns and wins as a starting quarterback and finished having thrown 169 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, breaking Cullen Harper’s single-season school record of 143 in 2007.

Last year, Clemson rolled to the national title game again, only to lose to LSU and Heisman winner Joe Burrow. Lawrence did struggle some in that one, completing 18-of-37 passes for 234 yards while rushing 10 times for 49 yards and a touchdown in the 42-25 loss.

That ended Lawrence’s 25-game winning streak as a starter, tied for the sixth-longest winning streak by a starting quarterback at any point of a career, trailing streaks by Toledo’s Chuck Ealey (35 from 1969-71), USC’s Matt Leinart (34 from 2003-05), Miami’s Ken Dorsey (34 from 2000-02), Oklahoma’s Steve Davis (28 from 1973-75) and Winston (26 from 2013-14).

Overall, he completed 268-of-407 passes for 3,665 yards with a career-high 36 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 842 snaps over 15 games. He also had 103 carries for 563 yards and a career-high nine rushing touchdowns, as his 45 combined rushing and passing touchdowns tied Lamar Jackson for fifth-most in a season in ACC history. Lawrence’s 66 career touchdown passes are the most in ACC history through the first two years of a career.

Clemson opens the season Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech and will be more than a three-TD favorite at Mybookie.

Kedon Slovis was a virtual unknown at quarterback for USC entering last season but took over for the Trojans’ injured starter early on and played terrific. It’s his job now. Slovis played prep ball at Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Arizona – his quarterbacks coach was Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. Slovis was a backup as a sophomore but then got better and better and top schools started noticing. It clearly helped to have Warner involved in the program.

“I felt he was underrated,” Warner said back then. “One of the things we’re going to do as a program here, you’re going to see more guys get attention. Once we start proving we’ve got good, quality players here… I felt Kedon was under the radar a lot.”

Coming out of high school, Slovis was ranked the No. 12 player in the state of Arizona by the 247Sports composite scores and the No. 26 pro-style quarterback in the nation, coming in as the No. 692 overall prospect in the 2018 class. Slovis chose USC as early as possible and never wavered.

“USC has been a school of interest for me since I was a little kid,” Slovis said when he committed. “It just felt right. Academically it’s prestigious and also in football.”

Slovis graduated from his high school a semester early and enrolled at USC in January 2019. He entered the 2019 season as the backup on the depth chart, behind then-starting quarterback JT Daniels. However, Daniels suffered what would turn out to be a season-ending injury in the opener vs. Fresno State. Slovis went 6 for 8 for 57 yards in relief with an interception, but the job was his now.

Slovis had a monster game in the regular-season finale vs. UCLA, completing 37-of-47 passes for 515 yards and four touchdowns. USC would finish 8-5 on the season with a 49-24 loss to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl. Slovis was 22-for-30, 262 yards and two touchdowns before leaving in the third quarter with an injury. He was diagnosed with a right shoulder and elbow sprain and didn’t return.

Overall, Slovis set a Pac-12 record and an NCAA freshman record by completing 71.9 percent of his passes for the season, connecting 282 of 392 passes. Slovis threw for 3,502 yards with 30 touchdowns — true freshman records at USC — and was named the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.

He missed the Washington game with a concussion. He was third nationally in completion percentage, seventh in passing efficiency (167.6, second in Pac-12), ninth in passing yards per game (291.8, second in Pac-12), 10th in completions (23.5, second in Pac-12), 14th in passing TDs (30, third in Pac-12), 18th in total offense (287.1, second in Pac-12) and 23rd in points responsible for (15.0, fourth in Pac-12). His 71.9 completion broke the Pac-12 record set by Stanford’s Andrew Luck in 2011.

Slovis’ 167.6 passing efficiency rating broke Cody Kessler’s USC season record of 167.1 set in 2014. His completions (282), attempts (392) and yardage (3,502) were USC freshman season records, while his TDs (30) trailed only Sam Darnold’s frosh mark of 31 in 2016 (Slovis has the most of any USC true freshman). Slovis had 4 games in 2019 with 400 passing yards (a season record by a Trojan and tied with Matt Barkley for the most ever in a USC career) and 4 TD throws, all in the final 6 contests.

Slovis was accurate on 51.3% of his pass attempts beyond 20 yards last season, which ranked third in the country. As far as Power Five quarterbacks go, Slovis only came in lower than LSU QB Joe Burrow, who hit 60 percent of his deep throws on the way to winning the Heisman.

In addition to being named Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, Slovis was a Freshman All-American, the first USC true freshman quarterback to be a Freshman All-American first teamer.

The job is clearly Slovis’ now as Daniels has entered the transfer portal. He started 11 games as a true freshman, beating out Matt Fink and Jack Sears for the position vacated by Sam Darnold’s early departure to the NFL. Daniels threw for 2,672 yards and 14 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in the Trojans’ disastrous 5-7 campaign in 2018.

Southern Cal opens the season Sept. 5 against powerhouse Alabama in Arlington, Texas. The Tide will be around two-TD favorites.

Jones played high school football at Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles, a powerhouse in the Sunshine State. He was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2017 and originally committed to Kentucky. However, when Jones took a second trip to Alabama and was offered a scholarship by Nick Saban, he flipped. The dismissal of Kentucky offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, who served as his primary recruiter, didn’t do the Wildcats any favors.

“Coach Saban likes to take his time with quarterbacks. We’d be in contact a lot with like a weekly phone call,” Jones said back then. “It took some time on both of our ends, because he wants to move slower with quarterbacks and I’m over here still committed and trying to figure out what I want to do. Saban always said he wanted me but things really clicked on this last visit. When he presented the opportunity, it took like two seconds to say ‘yes’. All the coaches were really excited.”

Jones redshirted in 2017 with the Tide as they had Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa. In 2018, still behind Tua and Hurts, Jones appeared in 14 of the Crimson Tide’s 15 games, mostly as a holder on special teams. Jones did put his name in the school record books with a 94-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle, the second-longest in school history, in a win against Louisiana-Lafayette.

That TD pass tied Freddie Kitchens’ 94-yard touchdown toss to Michael Vaughn in the 1996 SEC Championship against Florida. But Bama lost that game. Only AJ McCarron’s 99-yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper in the 2013 Iron Bowl was longer, but Bama also lost there.

Last year, Jones also was behind Tua but then Tagovailoa got hurt in a mid-November win over Mississippi State and Jones started the rest of the way. In the wild Iron Bowl loss to Auburn, Jones completed 26-of-39 passes for 335 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. He showed off toughness and largely looked poised — but also had both picks returned for touchdowns. That defeat eliminated Alabama from playoff contention.

In the Citrus Bowl win over Michigan, Jones completed 16-of-25 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Jones hit Jerry Jeudy for an 85-yard touchdown pass about a minute into the game and would toss scores to Devonta Smith and Miller Forristall in the third and fourth quarters.

Overall, Jones played in 12 games with four starts (3-1 record) and finished 97-of-141, totaling 1,503 yards to go with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. He added a touchdown on the ground. Jones was strong on throws behind-the-line of scrimmage and on attempts deeper down the field, on throws from 0-10 yards, he completed just 58 percent of his throws for 308 yards, two TDs and two picks.

However, Jones did perform well on extended plays last year. Among quarterbacks with at least 150 dropbacks, he ranked tied for No. 20 with a 58.8 completion percentage on passes which took 2.5 or more seconds to develop. While he isn’t thought of as a scrambler, Jones also has the ability to make plays with his feet as he was a Wing-T quarterback in high school.

Jones will have to beat out touted freshman recruit Bryce Young in fall camp, but won’t have to worry about Tua’s younger brother Taulia in the competition. He decided to transfer to Maryland. While Taulia appeared in five games as a freshman at Alabama last season, it was strictly during mop-up time. Current Maryland coach Mike Locksley was Tua’s offensive coordinator at Alabama 2018, was involved in Taulia’s recruitment.

The lack of spring practice has altered an offseason that offers an opportunity for Jones to affirm his standing as Alabama’s starting quarterback since

Young has yet to practice with the Tide.

No player from Canada has ever won the Heisman Trophy, but if Oklahoma State’s Hubbard puts up numbers like he did last year, he just might be the first in 2020.

Hubbard attended Bev Facey Community High School in Sherwood Park (suburb of Edmonton), Alberta, where he totaled 6,880 yards on 458 attempts with 82 touchdowns over three seasons. He was considered a three-star recruit out of high school but the No. 1 overall player from Alberta. Hubbard also was a high school track star.

“Really, Oklahoma State is the right place,” Hubbard said when committing there. “It just felt like the right place and the coaches are great. I really get along with the running backs coach – coach (Marcus) Arroyo. I know that I can do everything in my dreams there, to play football and run track.

After redshirting his first year at Oklahoma State in 2017, Hubbard played in 13 games in 2018 and had 740 rushing yards on 124 carries with seven touchdowns. He took over as OSU’s primary running fairly late in the regular season when No. 1 tailback Justice Hill was lost to injury. In his four games as the featured back (at No. 6 Oklahoma, vs. No. 7 West Virginia, at TCU and vs. No. 23 Missouri in the Liberty Bowl), Hubbard averaged 106.3 rushing yards per contest and 5.4 yards per carry.

His nine total touchdowns scored during the entirety of the season were the most for a Cowboy freshman during the Mike Gundy era (2005-present) and the most for any OSU freshman since Donovan Woods had 10 in 2004. Hubbard is one of five finalists for the Cornish Trophy presented to the top Canadian student-athlete in NCAA football.

Last year with Hill gone, Hubbard blew up as the Cowboys finished 8-5 – they lost to Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl. Hubbard rushed for 2,094 yards and 21 touchdowns, finishing as a unanimous All-American, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and one of three national finalists for the Doak Walker Award presented to the nation’s top running back (Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor won that). He was eighth in the Heisman voting.

He was the FBS leader in rushing yards, rushing yards per game, 200-yard rushing games and all-purpose yards per game. He tied for third in the FBS and first among all players from Power Five conferences in rushing touchdowns. Hubbard led the Big 12 in both points scored and total touchdowns. His rushing yards total was third in Big 12 history and second in school history, trailing only Barry Sanders’ Heisman Trophy season of 1988.

Hubbard led the nation with 15 rushes of 30 yards or longer, nine rushes of 40 yards or longer, seven rushes of 50 yards or longer, five rushes of 60 yards or longer, three rushes of 70 yards or longer, two rushes of 80 yards or longer and one rush of 90 yards or longer. Hubbard had the largest single-game rushing total for any Power Five Conference player in 2019 when he went for 296 yards against Kansas State. He also was the first running back to go over 200 yards in a game against TCU in Gary Patterson’s 19 years as head coach.

Hubbard won the Jon Cornish Trophy as the top college football player from Canada. He beat out fellow finalists Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool of British Columbia, Oklahoma defensive lineman Neville Gallimore, Oklahoma State linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga, and Ohio quarterback Nathan Rourke. Rourke had won the award the last two seasons.

Hubbard surprised many by not declaring for the NFL Draft. ESPN’s Mel Kiper ranked Hubbard as the No. 5 draft-eligible running back for 2020. Hubbard is looking to follow in the footsteps of fellow running backs and OSU alums Thurman Thomas and Sanders, who made their names in college before going on to Hall of Fame pro careers. Morgan originally attended Hazard High School in Hazard, Kentucky before transferring to Ryle High School in Union, Kentucky prior to his junior year. As a senior, he passed 2,747 yards and 27 touchdowns.

He originally committed to Western Michigan to play for head coach PJ Fleck, but when Fleck was hired at the University of Minnesota, Morgan followed Fleck by decommitting from Western Michigan and committing to Minnesota. Morgan was ranked the No. 3 quarterback in Kentucky for 2017 by Scout.com.

Morgan’s cousin, Tim Couch, played for Kentucky from 1996-1998 and spent five seasons (1999-2003) in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft.

Morgan redshirted his first year at Minnesota in 2017. He entered 2018 as a backup to Zack Annexstad but took over as the starter for the final six games of the season. In his first NCAA start against Indiana, Morgan completed 17-of-24 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns

Morgan finished completing 89-of-152 passes for 1,401 yards (second most ever for a Gopher freshman) and nine touchdowns (tied for third most all-time for a Minnesota freshman with Annexstad).

Last year, Minnesota finished 11-2 after upsetting No. 12 Auburn in the Outback Bowl. Morgan completed 19-of-29 passes for 278 yards, two touchdowns and an interception vs. the Tigers. Both of Morgan’s touchdown passes on the afternoon went to Tyler Johnson.

Morgan started every game last year and set school single-season records for passing yards (3,253) and passing touchdowns (30). He also set school single-season records in completion percentage (66.0%), passing yards per game (250.2), pass efficiency rating (178.7) and touchdown-interception ratio (4.28).

Morgan’s most memorable game in 2019 was vs. Purdue when he was 21-of-22 (95.45%) for 396 yards and four scores. His 95.45 completion percentage was the highest in Big Ten history for any player who attempted more than 15 passes. His 396 yards tied for the seventh most in school history (Bryan Cupito also had 396 against Ohio State in 2005) and were the most for a Gopher since Adam Weber threw for 416 yards (third most in school history) against Michigan State in 2009.

Pro Football Focus graded Morgan with a 89.4 passing grade in 2019, which ranked eighth best in the country. Morgan was stellar and now he has his entire offensive line returning. He will miss Tyler Johnson, Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks, but there’s still a lot of pieces to help sustain this 2020 offense.

Fleck believes there’s another step to Morgan’s game and thinks he could be the program’s first drafted quarterback since 1972 (Craig Curry to the Dolphins in Round 8). Morgan has good size and perhaps room to grow at 6’2″, 215 pounds. He has put on about 20 pounds after coming in as a 205-pound freshman in 2017.

“He’s so gifted on and off the field,” Fleck said. “If there’s one guy outworking everyone else in the country, it’s that guy. I can’t say that for a fact, but if I had to bet everything I have on that, I would.”

The Golden Gophers are coming off one of their best seasons in school history. They won 11 games for just the third time ever, as well as posting double-digit wins for only the second time since 1905. This season, Minnesota opens on Sept. 3 vs. Florida Atlantic.

Since moving to the FBS, Florida Atlantic is 1-33 all-time vs. Power 5 schools … but that win was over Minnesota in 2007. FAU is 0-22 all-time vs FBS Top 25 opponents.

Sam Ehlinger considered leaving Texas for the NFL last season but opted to return for his senior season, and he might be the best returning quarterback in the Big 12. Ehlinger played prep football at powerhouse Westlake High School near Austin, Texas where he broke school records held by Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Drew Brees and Nick Foles. He committed to Texas in July 2015 and joined the team two years later.

In his freshman season with the Longhorns in 2017, Ehlinger split playing time with quarterback Shane Buechele, playing in nine games and compiling a 2-4 record as a starter.

The next year, though, Ehlinger started every game and has never looked back. As a sophomore in 2018, he was 275-of-425 for 3,292 yards and 25 touchdowns to just five interceptions while adding 16 rushing touchdowns, the most ever by a Longhorn quarterback. His 41 touchdowns responsible for are second-most in school history, behind only Colt McCoy (45 in 2008).

Ehlinger became the first player in UT history to pass for at least 25 touchdowns and rush for at least 15 in a season, and his 3,292 passing yards were the fifth-most in school history for a single season. He set a Big 12- and school-record with 308 consecutive passes without an interception in 2018

Last year, UT was a modest disappointment at 8-5 but did end strong with a 38-10 upset of No. 11 Utah in the Alamo Bowl. Ehlinger completed 12-of-18 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns against a very good Utes defense. He completed 67 percent of his passes while rushing for 73 yards and a touchdown. Ehlinger blistered the Utah secondary to the tune of 11.2 yards per attempt en route to a 438-to-254 advantage in total yards.

Overall, Ehlinger was 296-of-454 for 3,663 yards and 32 touchdowns and rushed for 663 yards and seven touchdowns on 163 carries. He accounted for 4,326 yards of total offense (2nd in school history) and 39 total touchdowns (3rd) this season. He was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Wuerffel Trophy and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

As noted above, Ehlinger did ponder declaring for the NFL Draft, submitting his name to the NFL College Advisory Committee for feedback on his draft “stock.” Apparently, Ehlinger didn’t hear what he was hoping for. There hasn’t been a single quarterback out of the Longhorns program that was even selected on day two of the NFL Draft since 2010, when McCoy was picked up by the Cleveland Browns.

That there was no spring football might have helped Ehlinger as he aggravated a rib cartilage strain while working out this winter. If there’s one ding on Ehlinger’s resume it’s that he is currently 1-3 all-time against rival Oklahoma with a dramatic win in 2018 under his belt. He has performed well in the game, though, throwing just one interception in four meetings.

Ehlinger is making sure he’s staying ready and preparing as if there will be a season that starts on time in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. His day starts at 6:30 AM, he goes to the garage and lifts from about 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. He follows that up with either team meetings online or does some recovery work, then finishes the morning usually with some running. Ehlinger says he’s in class from about 12:30-3:15, and usually wraps up his day by going back outside and throwing the football with his brother.

“If everybody is preparing the way we should be preparing on our own, at our houses, we should be ready whenever we get the call that says we’re allowed back in the facility,” says Ehlinger.

Texas opens the season Sept. 5 at home vs. South Florida. Texas will play USF $1.9 million. It’s the largest single-game cash guarantee in USF history. The initial deal, negotiated by former USF athletic director Mark Harlan, called for USF to play in Austin in ’20 and ’24, with the Longhorns coming to Tampa on Sept. 3, 2022. But Texas opted out of the last two games.

Howell starred at Sun Valley High School in Monroe, North Carolina. During his high school career, he passed for 13,415 yards, 145 passing touchdowns and rushed for 3,621 yards and 60 touchdowns. He was the all-time leader in total offense in state history with 17,036 yards. Howell originally committed to play collegiately at Florida State.

However, then FSU Walt Bell took a job as the head coach at the University of Massachusetts. Bell had been instrumental in Howell’s recruitment to Tallahassee. So Howell changed his mind and decided to go play at North Carolina. Howell said after Mack Brown took over at UNC, he and Brown kept in close contact.

Howell won the starting job in fall camp for the Heels a year ago and became the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener in school history. He led a 24-20 win over South Carolina by throwing for 245 yards and two scores. Howell capped second-half drives of 98 and 95 yards with a 22-yard TD strike to Dyami Brown and a 17-yard scoring toss to Beau Corrales.

Howell instantly revitalized the program under HC Mack Brown in 2019 by earning a Week 2 upset over Miami (FL) and nearly beating Clemson a few weeks later.

UNC would finish the season at 7-6 following a 55-13 blowout of Temple in the Military Bowl. In that game, Howell completed 25-of-34 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns while catching a short touchdown pass. Howell opened up the scoring in this one via a 39-yard touchdown pass to Dyami Brown midway through the first quarter and added another scoring toss with time winding down in the second quarter, hooking up with Dazz Newsome for a 16-yard touchdown. In the second half, he would catch a two-yard touchdown pass on a third-quarter trick play and threw a 29-yard fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Newsome.

Howell was named Military Bowl MVP set the FBS true freshman record and UNC school record with 38 TD passes. Those 38 TD passes were the third most in a season in ACC history and the second most by a freshman QB. Howell ranked fourth nationally and led ACC QBs in passing TDs. He also ranked second in the ACC and 14th nationally with 3,641 passing yards.

He was second in the ACC and 10th nationally with a 160.3 passing efficiency and third in ACC in total offense (282.8 ypg). Howell Put together a streak of 13 consecutive games with multiple TD passes and had eight games with three or more TD passes. He was named a Freshman All-American, ACC Offensive & Overall Rookie of the Year.

Howell received Pro Football Focus’ highest fourth-quarter performance grade of 92.8 in 2019. He had an FBS-leading six touchdown passes that were thrown more than 40 yards downfield. That’s one more than Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow had for LSU.

This could be a dynamic offensive team in 2020 as Howell is surrounded by playmakers. UNC running backs Michael Carter (senior) and Javonte Williams (junior) combined for 1,936 rush yards in 2019, and wide receivers Dyami Brown (junior) and Dazz Newsome (senior) both eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards and combined for 22 touchdown receptions.

UNC does open the season with a very tough game at Central Florida on Sept. 4 and the Knights are early betting favorites. The Knights will look to extend their 21-game home winning streak when they host the Tar Heels at Spectrum Stadium. It will be the first meeting between the two programs and the first of UCF’s two matchups with ACC opponents this season.

Kyle Trask wasn’t even Florida’s starting quarterback to open last season but is now among the Heisman favorites for this year. Here are two props available to wager at Mybookie on Trask’s Heisman Trophy chances and Florida’s 2020 college football season – assuming there is one – and an overview.

Trask attended Manvel High School in Manvel, Texas, graduating in the class of 2016. He actually didn’t start any games at quarterback after his freshman year during his prep career as he was a backup to D’Eriq King – who is now with Miami (Fla.). King went on to set the Texas Class 6A state record for career touchdown passes with 140.

King estimated that his senior season included six games in which he played just the first quarter. Manvel would race out to a lead and Trask would come in so he could get time with the first team before halftime. In his final two seasons, Trask completed more than 70% of his passes, for 16 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

“When I got there, I was the eighth quarterback on the depth chart,” said King, recalling his freshman season. “[Trask] was No. 3. Out of those eight quarterbacks, six of them transferred and he’s the [other] one that stayed.”

Trask didn’t play either of his first two years at Florida. Florida. He was to compete with Feleipe Franks for the starting job in 2017, but suffered an injury which cost him the season. In 2018, he played in four games as a backup to Franks, completing 14 of 22 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. His season came to an end after he again injured his foot during practice.

Last year, Franks suffered a major injury vs. Kentucky and Trask took over – Franks has since transferred to Arkansas.

“Even as the backup, I always prepared like I was the starter,” said Trask. “I never wanted something like that to happen, and I go out there on the field with no clue what I’m doing, I don’t want to embarrass myself out there, so obviously I’m going to prepare to the best of my ability, even if I was the backup.”

Trask led the Gators to an 11-2 record, finishing the season with 237-of-357 passes completed (66.9%) for 2,941 yards, 25 touchdowns, and seven interceptions (156.09 rating). His 25 touchdown passes made him one of 27 FBS quarterbacks with at least 25 in 2019. His 156.09 passer rating was the ninth-highest rating for a season in school history, and the highest passer rating by a Gator since Tebow’s nation-leading 164.2 in 2009.

Trask threw three touchdown passes at LSU and followed it up with a career-high four touchdowns at South Carolina, making him the first Gator since Tim Tebow (2008 – at Vanderbilt and Florida State) to throw at least three touchdowns in consecutive road games. Trask also became the first Gator since Rex Grossman (2001) to throw for three-plus touchdowns in consecutive outings against SEC teams. He threw for 305 yards during Florida’s victory over Virginia at the Orange Bowl, which were the seventh-most passing yards by a Gators quarterback at a bowl game in school history.

Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nag has compared Trask to former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, who of course won the Heisman last year. Nagy raved about Trask’s poise and calm demeanor in the pocket. Nagy tweeted that Trask is rated at the same position as Burrow prior to the 2019 season.

“Studying (Florida) QB Kyle Trask,” Nagy wrote. “Incredible how slow the game happens for a guy that hadn’t started since 9th grade prior to last fall. Has poise of a guy that’s played a ton of football. (Kyle Trask) is on our (Senior Bowl) board in the exact same spot Joe Burrow was last summer.”

Florida opens the season Sept. 5 against Eastern Washington, which is a terrific FCS program. It’s the first-ever game for EWU against an SEC team. The game was scheduled back when Jim McElwain was the UF coach. McElwain spent 15 years at Eastern Washington from 1980-94 first as a player and then as a coach.

Gainwell played quarterback at Yazoo County High School in Mississippi. He was a three-year starter. As a senior, he passed for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns and ran for 1,834 yards and 32 touchdowns. Gainwell chose Memphis in a minor surprise over Ole Miss.

He moved to running back during summer training camp as a freshman at Memphis and played in four games before deciding to redshirt the rest of the season. He finished the season with four carries for 91 yards and a touchdown, a 73-yard run, and six receptions for 52 yards.

Last year, Gainwell was named the Tigers’ starting running back following the departure of Tony Pollard to the NFL. He rushed for 1,459 yards with 13 touchdowns on 231 carries and caught 51 passes for 610 yards and three touchdowns and was named the AAC Freshman of the Year and first team All-AAC. He also became the first freshman since Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor have 2,000-plus combined yards in a season.

Gainwell was one of two unanimous all-conference selections on the All-AAC team along with SMU wide receiver James Proche. Gainwell was the second Tigers player to earn Rookie of the Year after T.J. Carter in 2017.

He was the only running back in the country to earn Pro Football Focus rushing and receiving grades over 85.0. Gainwell displayed next-level explosiveness by recording 37 plays of 15+ yards. He averaged 27.6 yards per carry on his 13 touchdown runs. That’s the best mark of any back in the country who had 10 or more touchdowns in 2019.

Gainwell’s production dipped some when Patrick Taylor returned late in the season from a foot injury, but Taylor is gone now. With Gainwell’s ability as a rusher and a receiver and the majority of Memphis’ offense returning this season, the sophomore could have an even bigger year.

Memphis coach Mike Norvell left for Florida State, but the Tigers return a prolific group of offensive playmakers and most of their defensive starters for first-time coach Ryan Silverfield. There was plenty of outside interest in the Memphis job, but Silverfield got the nod after spending four seasons on staff, most recently as offensive line coach and deputy head coach. By promoting Silverfield, the Tigers kept a loaded roster and 2020 recruiting class ranked No. 3 in the AAC intact.

Finishing last year ranked 17th nationally while earning a New Year’s Six berth in the 84th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, Memphis opens the season with five games in 27 days.

The first game is Sept. 5 vs. Arkansas State. That revives A-State’s longest series against any opponent in school history. Arkansas State has played Memphis 57 times since the two teams first met in 1914. They haven’t played since 2013 but have split their last four games overall.

The next week, Memphis visits Big Ten opponent Purdue in Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 12. It will mark the first meeting between the Tigers and Boilermakers, and Memphis’ first regular season Big Ten opponent since 1998 at Minnesota.

In the first year without divisions since 2015, the American will have its top two teams play in the AAC Championship on Saturday, Dec. 5, in the top seed’s home stadium. The conference is going away from divisions because it has lost UConn. The NCAA deregulated conference championship game rules in 2015. Conferences can now hold a championship game pitting the top two teams provided they play a round-robin schedule. Prior to 2015, conferences had to have at least 12 members and be divided up into divisions.

The best receiver in college football last year was LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase, and because he wasn’t draft eligible is back this year. Here are two props available to wager at Mybookie on Chase’s Heisman Trophy chances and LSU’s 2020 college football season – assuming there is one – and an overview.

Chase was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2018 out of Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, Louisiana, which is basically New Orleans. During his career, he had 115 receptions for 2,152 yards and 30 touchdowns. He became the first receiver in the run-heavy school’s history to record 1,000 yards receiving in a season.

Both LSU and Auburn recruited Chase hard. He actually first committed to Kansas in the spring of his junior year. He eventually decommitted and planned to announce his commitment to TCU at Nike’s The Opening, but a scheduling conflict prevented him from making that announcement. Chase then pledged to Florida but decommitted after the Gators fired head coach Jim McElwain.

As a freshman in 2018, Chase played in all 13 games and started seven. He finished tied for second on the team in receptions (23) and was third in receiving yards (313). He caught three TD passes and averaged 13.6 yards a catch. He scored his first career TD on a 9-yard reception from Joe Burrow against Southeastern Louisiana in Week 2.

Last year, Burrow of course won the Heisman and Chase was incredible in winning the Biletnikoff Award as the top receiver in college football. He joined Josh Reed (2001) as LSU’s Biletnikoff Award winners. Chase became the first wide receiver and 11th player overall in LSU history to become a unanimous All-American. He set the SEC record for touchdown receptions in a season with 20, breaking the mark with a pair of TD receptions against Clemson in the National Championship Game.

Chase also broke the SEC single-season mark for receiving yards against Clemson, establishing the record of 1,780 (broke Reed’s 2001 record of 1,740). He had nine catches for 221 yards and a pair of TDs in win over Clemson in title game and was the first receiver in LSU history with three 200-yard games in a season and the only player in school history to have two 200-yard games during the regular season.

In addition, Chase joined Burrow, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and wide receiver Justin Jefferson to make LSU the first team in SEC history with a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season.

Pro Football Focus credited Chase with the most 15+ yard receptions in a single season since 2014. Chase racked up 47 such receptions, which was three more than any other player ever. The 6-foot-1, 200-poundere was invincible when facing off with single coverage, logging a PFF grade of 97.0 (out of 100) in such situations.

It’s rather likely that Chase’s numbers won’t be quite as good this year simply because Burrow is gone. Still, Chase is all but a lock to be a Top 10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and should be the first receiver taken.

LSU opens defense of its national title on Sept. 5 against Texas-San Antonio. It’s the first-ever meeting between the schools. It will mark UTSA’s third ever game against a member of the Southeastern Conference. UTSA will receive $1.4 million for the game. The guaranteed payment will be the largest in program history to that point.

Prior to being named the second head coach in UTSA history, Frank Wilson spent six years as a member of the LSU coaching staff. The New Orleans native was the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator in 2010-15 and also served as associate head coach for his final four seasons with the Tigers.

Zamir White was a very touted recruit but hasn’t had a chance to do much at Georgia yet. However, he should be the primary ball-carrier this year. White was the top-ranked running back recruit in the nation out of Scotland County High School in Laurinburg, North Carolina, in the class of 2018. He picked Georgia over Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina and Ohio State.

In a very class move, he announced his decision on his mother Shanee’ White’s birthday. His mother, who has a master’s degree in criminal justice and works as a corrections officer, has had a tremendous influence on her son’s life.

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound White averaged more than 8.5 yards per rushing attempt in his prep career – he scored on his first carry in high school in 2014. As a senior, he was named the winner of the Sam B. Nicola Award, presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Columbus to their chosen national player of the year. Previous winners of that award include Emmitt Smith, Josh Rosen and Jacob Eason. White averaged over 14 yards per carry as a senior, totaling 2,038 yards and 34 touchdowns.

However, White tore his ACL in the state playoffs as a senior. He worked his way back from his first ACL tear only to suffer another one, this time in his right knee two weeks before the Bulldogs’ first game in 2018.

“Definitely the first one, yeah, it was tough, but the second one, I was just like ‘why me? Why’d this happen to me?'” White said. “But my family, God, and my teammates just lifted me up and my coaches were there for me. I was alright and I worked and worked to get it back.”

Last year for the Dawgs, White played in 13 of 14 games and had 408 yards on 78 carries, third-best among all rushers. He had a career-best 92 yards on 18 rushes in first starting assignment vs. Baylor in the Sugar Bowl. White was the co-winner of David Jacobs Award (overcoming injury), given at team’s postseason awards gala.

White should be the clear-cut featured back in 2020 because D’Andre Swift left for the NFL and was a second-round pick of the Detroit Lions. Swift finished with 2,885 rushing yards for his career, good for seventh place on UGA’s all-time list.

Pro Football Network projects White as a potential first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft if he can stay on the field: “White is a blend of size and speed but has never been healthy for a full season. The best thing for his draft stock is simply staying healthy. Don’t be surprised if White ends the season as the consensus RB1, or if the injuries were too insurmountable.”

Coach Kirby Smart had this to say about White: “When he gets the opportunity to come out there and gain some confidence and success, I think everybody is pulling for him. And for the defensive players, it’s not easy to pull for him because he’s not easy to tackle him. He’s a full-grown man when he’s out there running the ball.”

Georgia is scheduled to open on Sept. 7 vs. Virginia in Atlanta in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game. Georgia has a 9-7-3 edge in the overall series between the two schools. Virginia and Georgia have played each other in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl twice before. Georgia won the first game in 1995, 34-27, and Virginia won the second matchup, 35-33, in 1998.

Moore was a very good high school basketball player at New Albany High School in Indiana before transferring to Trinity High School in Louisville, where he was a four-star football recruit. In June 2017, Moore committed to play collegiately at Texas but then in December decommitted, saying he didn’t have all the time he needed to evaluate schools during the season.

During the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in on Jan. 6, 2018, he surprised many by committing to Purdue – Moore was the first four-star recruit to commit to Purdue in years. The other schools in the mix were Florida State, Ohio State and Alabama. Why Purdue over those powerhouse programs? Purdue’s coach is Jeff Brohm, who once was a quarterback at Trinity. As a senior at Trinity, Moore set school records with 104 receptions for 1,461 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Moore was a sensation as freshman in 2018 with the Boilermakers in winning the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player. He became the true freshman consensus All-American in Big Ten history, was Big Ten Wide Receiver of the Year, Big Ten Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten (wide receiver and special teams).

Moore finished with 114 receptions for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed 21 times for 213 yards and two touchdowns and returned 33 kickoffs for 662 yards and 12 punts for 82 yards. Moore broke the school record for most all-purpose yards (313) in collegiate debut against Northwestern that year.

On balls thrown 9 or fewer yards downfield, Moore saw over 20 more targets than anyone else (118 in total) and was one of two receivers who produced a receiving grade above 90.0 in 2018. He also broke a tackle on over a third of these catches and averaged 7.5 yards after the catch per reception.

Last year didn’t go as well due to injuries. Moore was able to start only four games and had 29 receptions for 387 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest game was a 13-catch, 220-yard, one-TD matchup vs. Vanderbilt. He also returned kickoffs for 151 yards.

He, however, appeared to be fully healthy for Purdue’s spring practices, before they were canceled due to the coronavirus.

“I feel good. I’m at 100 percent,” Moore said in early March. “I’ve just been trying my best to become better.”

If Moore can return to form and stay on the field this year, he’s a likely first-round NFL draft pick in 2021. Pro Football Focus has compared him to Chiefs Pro Bowl wideout Tyreek Hill.

“His tape is out of this world,” PFF analyst Mike Renner said. “What he did every game is he stepped on the field as a true freshman at Purdue, he was the best player. Everyone knew he was the best player. Yes, he’s undersized. Yes, he doesn’t fit the mold of a top-10 pick, but he’s worth a top-10 pick. He can fill the Tyreek Hill role in your offense — not as well as maybe Tyreek Hill can — but he can do some things from a strength perspective that even Tyreek Hill can’t do. This guy is a freak in every sense of the word. Like I said, he is worth a top-10 pick.”

Purdue opens the season at Nebraska on Sept. 5 and will be an underdog there.

King attended Manvel High School in Texas, and in his sophomore season wasn’t even close to starting – in fact, he started that year as the eighth string. Yet, King won the starting job within a few weeks and went on to have a magnificent high school career. As a senior, King broke the career Texas 6A passing touchdowns record of 117 set by Kyler Murray. King would finish passing for over 10,000 yards and rushed for over 3,000, throwing for 140 touchdowns and rushing for 48.

King was rated the No. 203 prospect in the nation for the Class of 2016. King originally committed to TCU, but surprised many by changing his mind and committing to Houston, which isn’t even a Power 5 program. However, King liked the way the program was moving under then-coach Tom Herman – but Herman didn’t stick around long and is now at Texas.

King entered his freshman year at Houston as a wide receiver and had 29 receptions for 228 yards and a touchdown. However, he became the team’s starting quarterback late in the 2017 season. He finished with the team lead with 1,260 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns while finishing third on the team with 29 receptions for 264 yards and two touchdowns.

However, King became nationally known in 2018 when he set the ACC touchdown responsible for in a season record with 50 despite missing the last 2.5 games with an injury. King led the nation in points responsible for per game with an average of 27.5, four points ahead of Heisman Trophy winner Kyler. King had a rushing touchdown in all 11 games and was one of only three QBs in FBS history with at least 35 passing TDs and 13 rushing TDs.

Last year, King made national news again but not for all the right reasons.

He played the first four games under new coach Dana Holgorsen and UH went 1-3. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound, dual-threat star threw for 663 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for 312 and six touchdowns in 2019 in those four. He broke former Florida star Tim Tebow’s record by throwing and running for touchdowns in 15 consecutive games dating to 2018.

Then King made the unprecedented decision to redshirt the rest of the year to maintain eligibility for 2020 – players can redshirt these days if the don’t play more than four games.

“I have decided the opportunity to redshirt this season gives me the best chance to develop as a player, earn my degree and set me up for the best success in the future. I’m looking forward to being part of the success of this program going forward,” King said then.

King was ripped by many around the country for quitting on his team. He originally said he planned to return to Houston but later changed his mind and transferred to Miami, where he’s immediately eligible. He also considered Arkansas, LSU and Maryland.

King finished his Houston career fifth in school history with 82 touchdowns responsible for. His 82 career touchdowns responsible for since 2016 is ninth-most among active FBS quarterbacks in that span. He ranks second at Houston in passing efficiency (155.4), third in completion percentage (61.8%), sixth in passing touchdowns (50), eighth in total offense (6,346) and 10th in passing yards (4,925). He also rushed for 28 touchdowns and 1,421 yards.

Technically, King will have to beat out N’Kosi Perry and Tate Martell at Miami, but it would be a shock if King didn’t win the job. The Hurricanes have a new offensive coordinator, Rhett Lashlee, who spent last season at SMU, where the Mustangs were seventh in the FBS in scoring offense. In 2019, Miami averaged just 25.7 points per game (10th in the ACC) and 367.2 yards per game (12th).

Purdy played at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona. He passed for 8,937 yards and 107 touchdowns in his career. Purdy was a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 36 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2018. He named the Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year as a senior.

Purdy got offers from Boise State, Iowa State, Kansas, Central Florida, Alabama, Illinois and Texas A&M. He took all five of his awarded official visits – Boise State, Iowa State, Central Florida, Alabama and Texas A&M in that order – and chose the Cyclones in a bit of an upset.

Purdy entered his true freshman year at Iowa State as the third string to Kyle Kempt and Zeb Noland but became the starter after Kempt was injured and Noland was ineffective. In his NCAA debut against Oklahoma State (well, first game with significant action), he had 402 yards (318 passing, 84 rushing) of total offense, the ninth-best single-game effort in school history. Purdy accounted for five touchdowns vs. the Cowboys (four passing, one rushing). He hit on 18-of-23 passes (78.3%), tying for the 11th-best single-game completion pct. mark in school history.

Overall, Purdy led Iowa State to a 7-2 record and a trip to the Alamo Bowl as a freshman and had a 6-1 record as a starter vs. conference opponents. He became the first true freshman quarterback to start a game for ISU since 1995. Purdy broke ISU’s single-season mark and ranked 15th nationally in completion percentage (66.4 pct.), connecting on 146-of-220 passes for 2,250 yards (ninth in school history).

He broke the school record for passing efficiency in a season at 169.9, ranking sixth nationally. Purdy was fourth in the nation in yards per completion (15.4) and also was a threat as a runner, ranking second on the team in rushing with 308.

Last year, there was no doubt that Purdy was the starter. Iowa State finished 7-6 following a 33-9 loss to No. 15 Notre Dame in the Camping World Bowl. In that game, he completed 17-of-30 passes for 222 yards. Not only was Purdy held to just 7.4 yards per pass, but he was sacked three times and hit in the pocket a number of other times.

Purdy started all 13 games while compiling the most prolific season by an Iowa State quarterback in school history. He set 18 school records (game, season, career) during the season, including passing yardage (3,982), passing touchdowns (27), completions (312), total offense (4,231) and 300-yard passing games (6). He tallied the second-best passing efficiency total (151.07) and the third-best completion percentage (65.7 pct., 312-475) in school history.

Purdy had nine games of 300 yards of total offense to rank fourth nationally. He was the first Cyclone since Alex Espinoza (1986) to lead the conference in passing yardage (306.3), ranking fourth in the nation. He was fifth nationally in total offense (325.5) and sixth in completions (312, 24.0) and set a school record by throwing for a touchdown in 12-straight games. He also set school record for touchdowns responsible (35)

The sophomore was one of four players in FBS with at least 27 passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns (Justin Fields, Jalen Hurts, Trevor Lawrence). His eight rushing touchdowns was second on the team and tied for the fifth-most by a Cyclone QB. Purdy was one of three players in FBS with at least two 6-TD games (Joe Burrow, Anthony Gordon) and led his team to three fourth-quarter comeback victories (UNI, Texas, Kansas). Purdy was named second-team All-Big 12, only the second Cyclone signal-caller to earn first- or second-team all-Big 12 recognition (Seneca Wallace).

Pro Football Focus graded Purdy as the 11th-best QB among passers to qualifying for grading in both 2018 and 2019. Additionally, Purdy had the lowest rate of negatively graded throws in which he was able to throw on rhythm. This year, Purdy should break the school’s career passing touchdown record (50) after just a few games. He could easily be a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft if he declares.

Iowa State will be a huge favorite on Sept. 5 against FCS school South Dakota.

During his career at Pinson Valley High School in Alabama, Nix recorded over 12,000 total offensive yards and 161 touchdowns, both state records. He also won Alabama’s Mr. Football Award after his senior season and led Pinson Valley High to consecutive Class 6A state titles.

Nix was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2019 and the No. 1 ranked dual-threat QB in the nation. Every school in the country wanted him, but it was always expected that Nix would go to Auburn because his father Patrick Nix played quarterback at Auburn from 1992-95 and also was his coach at Pinson Valley High. Bo Nix was Auburn’s highest-rated quarterback signee since Jason Campbell in 2000.

Nix won a battle with Joey Gatewood in fall camp last year to start Week 1 vs. a very good Oregon team in Atlanta. It was the first time in his head coaching career that Gus Malzahn — who had retaken over play-calling duties last year —started a freshman quarterback to open a season, and it was the first time Auburn started a true freshman at quarterback in Week 1 during the modern era. It hadn’t happened since Travis Tidwell, who started the 1946 opener against Mississippi Southern.

Auburn would knock off No. 11 Oregon 27-21. After just barely converting a fourth down with on a run in the final minute, Nix threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Seth Williams with 9 seconds remaining for the winning score. On fourth-and-3, Nix rolled to the right, then tucked and pushed forward. Only the nose of the ball, sitting at midfield, was past the chain when officials measured for a first down.

Nix finished 13-of-31 passing, four of those completions on Auburn’s final drive, for 177 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran seven times for 42 yards.

“He has some savviness to him, there’s no doubt,” Malzahn said afterward of Nix. “When the game is on the line, you’ve got to make plays, and that’s the one thing he showed.”

Nix would go on to be named the SEC Freshman of the Year. He finished 217-of-377 passing for season for 2,542 yards and 16 scores (all Auburn freshman records) and rushed for 313 yards and seven TDs.

“He’s got something special to him,” Malzahn said after Nix helped Auburn beat Alabama 48-45 in the Iron Bowl. “He’ll win a championship before he gets out of here. His leadership, the moment’s not too big. He’s got really good command. He’s got the special traits. The future’s going to be a lot of fun with him leading us.”

Before the coronavirus pandemic restricted travel back in March of this year, Nix spent some time in Dana Point, Calif., with a trio of quarterbacks big-name quarterbacks working to hone their skills. He worked with s Joe Burrow, the reigning Heisman winner, national champion and No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Also Sam Darnold, the current New York Jets quarterback who was drafted third overall two years ago. And finally Jordan Palmer, a one-time NFL quarterback who has established a post-playing career as one of the most respected private quarterback coaches in the nation. Palmer, who runs the QB Summit, has worked with a veritable who’s who of quarterbacks in recent years.

“Just going out there, obviously you can learn so much from them and you can soak up so much knowledge from them and how they play the game and just how to go about playing quarterback on a level like that,” Nix said.

Auburn opens the 2020 season (we hope) against visiting Alcorn State on Sept. 5 and will be a monstrous favorite.

It’s not too often that Oklahoma State can go into Texas and steal one of that state’s top recruits over Texas, Texas A&M or Oklahoma, but that’s what the Cowboys did with Sanders.

At Billy Ryan High in Denton, Texas, Sanders passed for 3,288 yards and 35 touchdowns along with 1,099 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground in his junior season before tearing his ACL. He was considered a four-star recruit and committed to Oklahoma State during his junior year over offers from Colorado, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Penn State and Texas A&M.

As a senior, Sanders threw for 3,845 yards and 54 touchdowns and ran for 1,380 yards and 16 touchdowns and was named the Gatorade Player of the Year, the Associated Press Player of the Year, and Texas Mr. Football. He had a 46-6 record in 52 career starts over four seasons, passing for 8,747 yards despite suffering two season-ending injuries. He finished with 146 total touchdowns (106 passing, 40 rushing).

As a true freshman at OSU in 2018, Sanders redshirted. After competing with transfer Dru Brown throughout spring practice and summer training camp last year, Sanders was named the Cowboys’ starting quarterback just before the season opener.

In his debut, Sanders completed 19-of-24 passes for 203 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 52-36 road win against Oregon State. Sanders also rolled up 13 rushes for 109 yards, including a scamper of 30 yards.

The next week in a rout of McNeese State, Sanders completed 12-of-18 passes for 250 yards with three touchdowns and ran for 51 yards. He could have had bigger numbers but was pulled early with the game out of hand. All three touchdown passes were to star wideout Tylan Wallace.

Unfortunately for Sanders, he suffered a thumb injury in a mid-November game vs. Kansas that required surgery and wouldn’t play again. He was hurt when his right hand hit an opposing player’s helmet on a follow-through.

Sanders was still voted as Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches and won the Russell Okung Award presented to Oklahoma State’s outstanding newcomer.

Sanders set a school freshman record by passing for 2,065 yards. That mark shattered the existing school record of 1,628 yards, set in 2004 by Donovan Woods despite the fact that Sanders missed the final two games of the season to injury.

At the time of Sanders’ injury, Oklahoma State had a 7-3 record. Among the 15 teams from Power Five conferences led by a freshman quarterback, only Ohio State had a better record. Sanders ranked sixth among freshmen nationally with 244.8 yards of total offense per game and was one of only 12 freshmen nationally to pass for more than 2,000 yards. He averaged 57.1 rushing yards per game, a mark that ranked third in the nation among all freshman quarterbacks. His 13.32 yards per pass completion ranked second in the Big 12 and 27th nationally.

Oklahoma State opens the season (we hope) on Sept. 3 vs. Oregon State. As noted above, the Pokes rolled the Beavers last year 52-36. Oklahoma State finished with 555 yards of total offense. Sanders was the first freshman to start a season opener for the Cowboys since Wes Lunt in 2012.

Will the season start on time? Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said recently he’s optimistic about college football starting in the fall, but is skeptical of making it through the entire season without interruption in the event the coronavirus “comes roaring back” during flu season.

Indiana is known as a basketball school and has never had a Heisman Trophy winner. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. looks to change that this year. Here are two props available to wager at Mybookie on Penix’s Heisman Trophy chances and Indiana’s 2020 college football season – assuming there is one – and an overview.

Out of high school in Tampa, Penix Jr. was rated by 247Sports as the No. 548 player nationally in the Class of 2018, the 21st as a quarterback and the 86th best prospect in Florida. The left-hander threw 61 touchdowns and just six interceptions in his two years as a starter (24 games). He added 16 TDs on the ground. Penix was named the Hillsborough County Player of the Year passed for 2,165 yards with 30 scores, five INTs and a 114.2 quarterback rating as a senior. He visited Indiana and Florida State but ultimately enrolled with Indiana on 2/22/2018.

Penix played three games as a freshman before tearing his ACL vs. Penn State and then redshirting. He went 21-of-34 (61.8 percent) for 219 yards with one touchdown in the three games and rushed seven times for 45 yards.

Last year, he started all six games in which he appeared before suffering a season-ending injury (right sternoclavicular joint) in a win over Northwestern on Nov. 2. Penix set the program single-season completion percentage mark (68.8), which also ranks sixth in Big Ten history. He completed 110-of-160 for 1,394 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Penix posted a 157.56 pass-efficiency rating while rushing for 118 yards on 22 attempts (5.4 average) with two TDs. He averaged 232.3 passing yards and 252.2 total yards per game. Penix became the first Indiana freshman to start the opening game since Antwaan Randle El in 1998. He joined Randle El as the only Hoosier freshman to surpass 300 passing yards in his first start. Penix was one of just four IU freshmen to ever reach the 300-yard benchmark (Kellen Lewis, Bob Hoernschemeyer).

In his first career road start, Penix went 33-of-42 (78.6) for 286 yards and a career-high three scores in his first-career road start at No. 25 Michigan State. He completed a school-record 20-straight passes, the second-longest streak in conference history (Iowa’s Chuck Long, 22 in 1984). The 33 overall completions were a career-high and share seventh on the school’s single-game list.

The Hoosiers ranked 15th in the nation in passing yards per game. They averaged 31.7 points per game and six yards per play. In the 247Sports’ Big-Ten quarterback rankings, Penix was selected as the third-best returning quarterback behind Ohio State’s Justin Fields and Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan.

Peyton Ramsey started four games for the Hoosiers as a redshirt freshman in 2017 and all 12 games in 2018. He lost his starting job to Penix Jr. before last season but started the last seven games after Penix was injured. Indiana went 4-3 in those games, with a seven-point loss at Penn State and a one-point loss to Tennessee in the Gator Bowl, to finish the season 8-5 — its highest win total since 1993. Ramsey transferred this offseason to Northwestern.

Because of the coronavirus, Penix is in his hometown of Tampa and he said that he has been doing strength and conditioning workouts, as well as QB workouts with his personal coach.

“I’m out training myself, personally,” he said. “Coaches sent out the workout to the whole team. Everybody is out with their families but we all find gyms. If we have dumbbells, we do dumbbell workouts or bodyweight. Just different ways we can stay ready or stay in shape. That’s what I’ve been doing myself and I’ve been going to my quarterback coach and I’ve been training and running on my own for the most part.”

Indiana opens the season at Wisconsin on Sept. 4 and will be an underdog.

Patterson played high school football at St. Vincent Pallotti in Maryland. He rushed for 2,045 yards and 23 touchdowns his senior season. In a game vs. Riverside Baptist he accounted for 558 all-purpose yards (282 rushing, 54 receiving, 124 KOR, 98 INT return). Still, he wasn’t considered a top recruit.

“The recruiting process, I heard it all. Coaches saying, ‘He’s a good player, he’s too small, he can’t play in the ACC, the Big Ten, he’s too small,'” said Patterson.

As Patterson waited for an offer, his twin brother and UB defensive captain James had several, including one from Buffalo.

As a freshman in 2018 at Buffalo, he played in all 14 games and started six. Patterson was named the MAC Freshman of the Year and All-MAC Second Team. He led the team in rushing with 1,013 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season – both school records for a freshman running back. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry, which was third in school history for a single season.

Last year as a sophomore, Patterson had the best season by a running back in school history. He rushed for a single-season school record 1,799 yards and scored 19 rushing touchdowns, also a school record. Patterson led the MAC and ranked fifth in the nation in rushing. He had eight 100-yard rushing games on the season and was named the Walter Camp National Player of the Week after rushing for a single-game school record 298 yards and a Mid-American Conference record six touchdowns against Bowling Green.

Patterson was twice named MAC East Division Offensive Player of the Wee and was named the Offensive MVP of the Bahamas Bowl after rushing for 173 yards and two touchdowns against Charlotte.

With another performance like last year’s, he should find himself as one of the top running backs in the 2021 NFL Draft class. Patterson isn’t the fastest or most explosive running back. But what he does well is somehow manage to slip out of tackles and keep going for extra yardage.

Patterson will be running behind an offensive line projected to be one of the better units in the country by Pro Football Focus.

The Bulls return eight starters on offense and nearly 100 percent of their total offensive production from a season ago. All but one running back who had a carry and one wide receiver who caught a pass are returning along with every quarterback to an offense that posted record-setting offensive numbers last season. The Bulls shattered the school record for rushing in 2019 with 3,256 yards to lead the MAC and rank 10th in the nation.

One issue for Patterson is that he shares carries with Kevin Marks, who comes off a strong season in his own right. The junior rushed for a career-best 1,035 yards and scored eight touchdowns in 2019. Over his two seasons, Marks has rushed for 1,880 yards and 21 touchdowns. He ranks in the top 10 in school history in career rushing yards and career rushing touchdowns.

Obviously, it’s unlikely a MAC player is going to win the Heisman. The last Bull to contend for national recognition, defensive end/linebacker Khalil Mack, used a season opening game against Ohio State to grab the attention of voters. Mack went on to be the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 draft by the Raiders – he now plays for Chicago.

Buffalo opens the season at Kansas State on Sept. 5. K-State will pay Buffalo a $900,000 guarantee for the game, which will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

When he finished high school, Wallace ranked among the top-15 all-time in Texas high school football, with 3,760 career receiving yards to go along with 48 touchdowns and 182 catches. When it came to recruiting, Wallace was a four-star recruit and ranked in the top-75 overall. Wallace’s college career started quietly, with seven receptions in 13 games for 118 yards.

In 2018, Wallace was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, which goes to the nation’s top receiver. He was also a first-team All-American. The Texas native blew up with 86 catches for 1,491 yards and 12 touchdowns.

That yardage was the fifth-best total in school history and three of the four ahead of him came in Biletnikoff Award-winning seasons from Justin Blackmon in 2010 and 2011 and James Washington in 2017. The yards also marked the second-most prolific receiving season for an underclassman in school history, trailing only the 1,782 yards by Blackmon in his Biletnikoff Award-winning season of 2010.

Wallace’s 66 first-down receptions led all Power Five conference players and ranked second nationally. In Oklahoma State’s three games against teams ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll, he averaged 5.6 receptions, 168.0 receiving yards and 2.0 receiving touchdowns per game.

Last year, Wallace’s numbers weren’t as good but that’s because he suffered a torn ACL in practice and was limited to eight games. Wallace still earned second-team All-Big 12 status despite missing half of the conference season to injury. He averaged 112.9 receiving yards per game to rank fourth in the FBS and first among all receivers from Power Five conferences before sustaining a season-ending injury in practice in week nine.

His 903 yards through eight games led the Big 12 and his eight receiving touchdowns ranked second. His season average of 112.9 receiving yards per game led the Big 12. At the time of his injury, Wallace was leading the nation in catches of 60 yards or longer, catches of 70 yards or longer and catches of 90 yards or longer. Among Power Five conference receivers with a minimum of 45 receptions, he was leading the nation with 17.0 yards per reception at the time of his injury.

That injury might have been a blessing in disguise for OSU because Wallace might have turned pro but instead returned to school.

“We are building something special in Stillwater, and I’m not ready to leave because this is where I belong,” said Wallace in a statement. “God has a plan for my life, and I believe he places every roadblock for me to overcome. I want to give back to my family, my teammates, and the entire OSU community because I am beyond thankful. I’m after a Big 12 Championship in 2020 and believe we have the team to do it. With that being said, I will be returning to Oklahoma State for my senior season. Let’s ride.”

Wallace cited his twin brother Tracin as a big reason he is staying as they will graduate together. Tylan is still working toward being 100 percent sometime in June, which was the schedule after surgery. It would have been difficult to evaluate Wallace’s stock had he declared for the 2020 draft. His ACL tear would keep him from working out at the NFL combine or at OSU’s Pro Day. His brother Tracin had three ACL tears in three years before retiring from football.
