How to Bet the 2020 College Football Championship Game

Written by on January 6, 2020

There are certain sporting events that we all choose to wager on, even if it’s a sport that we do not bet regularly. The Super Bowl and the Kentucky Derby are two of the biggest in that regard, while the soccer World Cup every 4 years may be the biggest of them all. Another game that always gets a ton of action is the College Football Championship Game, which is set to go on Monday, January 13.

The defending champion Clemson Tigers will be squaring off against the LSU Tigers in what should be a highly entertaining game of football. There are al kinds of NCAAF prop bets available for this one, but I am going to talk about how I will be betting the big game this coming Monday.

How to bet the 2020 College Football Championship Game

  • When: Monday, January 13
  • Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans
  • TV: ESPN
  • Radio: SiriusXM
  • Live Stream: WatchESPN

College Football Championship SU

If you are not into parlays and some of the other action available, the easiest way to go is to simply play a straight up bet, which means picking who you think will win the national Championship. It’s a tough one this year, as we have a pair of 14-0 teams going head to head.

There are some who will like the fact that the Clemson Tigers have a huge edge in playoff experience, but there are others who will lean towards LSU and their killer offense. As much as I like the experience angle, I picked LSU to win it all at the midway point of the season. I am not about to go back on that now. I am playing LSU straight up.

  • Clemson are 14-0 SU in their last 14 games this season
  • LSU are 10-1 SU in their last 11 games against an opponent in the Atlantic Coast conference

College Football Championship Against the Spread

Of the three basic wagers available for the big game, I think this is the toughest one to predict. As it stands right now, the bookies have the LSU Tigers in as a 6 ½ point favorite, mostly because of the absolute drubbing that they handed to Oklahoma in the semi-final.

LSU comes in as the favorite for the College Football Championship Game.

The LSU Tigers have been a fantastic bet against the spread, going 11-3-2 ATS in their last 16 games, but you can also say the same about the Clemson Tigers. They are on a run where they have covered the spread in each of their last 5 games, while also covering in 7 of their last 8. As an underdog, they are 8-1 ATS in their last 9. I am leaning towards Clemson covering, but I could change my mind on that one.

  • Clemson are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games when playing as the underdog
  • LSU are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games played on a Monday

NCAAF Championship Game Point Total

On the face of it, the 70 points being used as the OVER/UNDER seems very much on the high side and perhaps a pretty obvious under pick, but I am not so sure that’s how things will go. Let’s not forget that LSU dropped 63 points on the Oklahoma Sooners in the semi-final, and while the Clemson Tigers are better defensively, you would still like this offense to get to at least 40 points.

I think we are very much looking at a shootout here, with LSU seeing 10 of their last 15 games as a favorite going OVER. In January games, the Clemson Tigers have seen 5 of their last 6 go OVER the point total, so I will definitely be playing the OVER next Monday night.

  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of Clemson’s last 6 games played in January
  • The total has gone OVER in 10 of Louisiana State’s last 15 games when playing as the favorite
