The Big 12 will open up conference play this Saturday, with two old rivals facing off, as the Oklahoma Sooners will host the Kansas State Wildcats in Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners come into this one undefeated, as they routed former Big 12 member Nebraska last Saturday. The Kansas State Wildcats enter this one with a 2-1 record. Last Saturday, the Wildcats were upset by Tulane. We’ll see how Kansas State bounces back from a shocking loss.
Let’s take a look at each of the two combatants, and then we’ll give you our NCAA Football Betting prediction for the Big 12 opener for both schools.
Can the Wildcats Rebound to Shock the Sooners in Week 4? | Kansas State Wildcats at Oklahoma
Kansas State Wildcats
One thing we can say for the Kansas State Wildcats is that they can play some defense. Through their three games this season, the Wildcats have only given up 22 points and have one shutout to their credit. The Wildcats have forced seven turnovers on the season, and when you can win the turnover battle, you’re going to win a majority of your games.
Offensively, Adrian Martinez leads the way for the Wildcats. The former Nebraska Cornhusker is a game-managing quarterback for the Wildcats. Their offense isn’t anything fancy, but it gets the job done. The Oklahoma Sooners will more than likely see a strong rushing attack from the Wildcats. Kansas State will look to run the ball early and often in order to keep Oklahoma’s high-scoring offense off of the field.
Oklahoma Sooners
In Oklahoma’s three lopsided victories, quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been a force. Gabriel has thrown for nearly 730 yards with seven touchdown passes. He has also run the ball very well this season. The lefty has been a great addition for the Sooners this season. Between the aerial attack led by Marvin Mims, and numerous backs being able to gain good yardage on the ground, the Sooners offense has been very strong to start the season.
While the Oklahoma Sooners have yet to play much competition, the defense has been very good under the changes brought on by new head coach Brent Venables. Now that the Sooners are playing Big 12 competition, we’ll see how good the defense can truly be this season.
Predictions
The Oklahoma Sooners are 11.5-point home favorites against the Kansas State Wildcats. It’s a little surprising that they aren’t favored by more than 11.5, considering that Kansas State lost last weekend to Tulane. However, with the spread not being higher, that shows that the oddsmakers are very impressed with Kansas State’s defense.
While Nebraska’s defense is nowhere near the caliber of Kansas State’s, the Sooners were still able to rack up over 580 yards, including over 300 on the ground against a Big 10 school. So, we know that they’ll be able to do some damage against the Wildcats defense.
While we don’t think that the Sooners will be putting up huge numbers, including a high score, we do think that they’ll beat Kansas State, and they’ll cover the spread in the process. We can see the Sooners winning by a score of 28-14, or something similar to that.
