How to Bet Kentucky at Tennessee NCAA Football Week 11 Spread & Pick

Written by on November 8, 2018

Kentucky can’t win the SEC East for the first time ever following last week’s loss to Georgia, but the No. 12 Wildcats do have major bowl aspirations. Tennessee, meanwhile, needs a strong finish to just make a bowl. UK is a solid College Football Betting favorite in Knoxville.

Last Season

UK knocked off Tennessee 29-26 last year. Stephen Johnson ran for an 11-yard touchdown with 33 seconds remaining and hit Benny Snell with the 2-point conversion pass. Snell also rushed for three first-half TDs and Kentucky rallied past Tennessee for its first win over the Volunteers since 2011.

The Cats won despite losing four fumbles in the game. The defense limited Tennessee to three field goals off those turnovers and held firm late to give the offense one last chance to respond with a TD drive behind Snell, who rushed for 180 yards on 27 carries. The Wildcats’ win was just their second in 33 series meetings. The Vols have played the Wildcats more than any other opponent and their 79 wins are the most versus any team. UT holds a 79-25-9 record overall against UK, including a 42-10-6 mark at home. UK looks to snap a 16-game losing streak in Knoxville. The last win came in 1984, 17-12.

Why Bet on Kentucky?

The Cats played a winner-take-all game for the SEC East last week but lost 34-17 to No. 6 Georgia. It was the most points Kentucky has allowed this season. However, it’s the first time since the 1993 season that UK has allowed 34 points or less in each of the first nine games. UK has allowed 138 points this season, fewest in the first nine games of a season since 1987 (136). UK allowed 113 yards passing, fewest against a top 10-ranked team since Alabama in 2008.

Sophomore quarterback Terry Wilson completed 23 of 29 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown. He completed 79.3 percent of his passes, the highest percentage for a UK quarterback with at least 25 attempts since Patrick Towles vs. Missouri in 2015. He has completed at least 70 percent of his passes in consecutive SEC games, the first UK player to do so since Mike Hartline in 2010. It was a UK quarterback’s best completion percentage against a top-10 team since Mike Hartline vs. Auburn in 2010.

Junior running back Benny Snell, Jr. rushed 20 times for 73 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown run. He has 1,008 rushing yards this season, becoming the first player in school history with three 1,000-yard seasons. Snell became the third player in SEC history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs in each of his first three seasons, joining Georgia’s Herschel Walker (1980-82) and Darren McFadden (2005-07) of Arkansas.

The Maxwell Award semifinalist owns the school record with 42 career touchdowns and has moved into second place UK’s career rushing list (3,432) and career 100-yard games (16). He ranks 12th nationally and leads the SEC at 112 rush yards per game.

The UK defense, led by senior pass rusher extraordinaire Josh Allen, has a league-high 10 sacks and 14.5 TFL this season. His defensive unit is eighth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 15.3 points per game, including four games of yielding 10 points or less.

Why Bet on Tennessee?

The Vols beat Charlotte 14-3 last Saturday on Homecoming. It was the fifth-straight Homecoming win for the Volunteers and 73rd overall on the occasion since 1916. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jarrett Guarantano paced the Tennessee passing game with 172 yards on 16-of-21 attempts and a touchdown. Sophomore wideout Josh Palmer and junior tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson led the receiving corps with 71 and 53 yards through the air, respectively.

Marquez Callaway’s 82-yard punt return touchdown in the first quarter was Tennessee’s first true punt return score since Nov. 5, 2016, when Callaway registered a 62-yard touchdown return against Tennessee Tech. Callaway’s score made the Charlotte game the fourth game this season (also ETSU, Auburn, Alabama) that Tennessee has had a non-offensive touchdown.

Kentucky at Tennessee is one of the best NCAA Football Week 11 games.

Guarantano’s career 64.1 completion percentage is No. 1 in UT history (No. 2 is Darryl Dickey – 63.0, No. 3 Peyton Manning – 62.5) and his 1.20 interception percentage also ranks first (No. 2 Dickey – 1.23). He hasn’t thrown an interception in his last 126 pass attempts. Guarantano has 7 TDs, 0 INTs and is averaging 192.5 yards per game on 67.6% passing the last four games (vs. Charlotte, at South Carolina, vs. No. 1 Alabama, at No. 21 Auburn). UT has thrown only two interceptions this season – the lowest of any Power 5 team. Only Georgia Southern (0) and North Texas (1) have less among FBS teams.

With the victory, Tennessee has won 30 straight home games against non-Power 5 opponents dating back to the 2008 season. The Big Orange have won 11 consecutive games against nonconference opponents at Neyland Stadium dating back to 2015 and own an eight-game win streak in November in non-conference games.
