Louisville vs Clemson NCAA Football Week 10 Odds & Prediction

Written by on November 2, 2018

Clemson was ranked No. 2 in the first College Football Playoff Top 25, really no surprise, so if the Tigers keep winning they will be back in the national semifinals. They should have no trouble as mega-favorites on the NCAAF lines for Saturday vs. a bad Louisville team.

Last Season

Clemson won 47-21 at Louisville. Tigers QB Kelly Bryant, who left the program earlier this season, completed 22 of 32 passes for 316 yards and a score while also rushing for two touchdowns. Louisville QB Lamar Jackson, the 2016 Heisman winner, passed for 317 yards and three TDs, but most of that came with things already in hand for Clemson.

The Tigers’ Dorian O’Daniel returned an interception 44 yards for a TD and a 26-7 third-quarter lead, and they sacked Jackson four times. The Cardinals were outgained 613-433, saving face somewhat with a 14-point fourth quarter.

Clemson is 4-0 all-time vs. Louisville.

Why Bet on Louisville?

Well, not to win. The Cardinals have fallen apart without Lamar Jackson and Coach Bobby Petrino might not survive this season. Louisville was blasted 56-35 last week at home vs. Wake Forest. The Deacons scored TDs on five of their first six first-half possessions.

Louisville’s Trey Smith rushed for a career-high three TDs and 98 yards on 13 carries. Jawon Pass added a career-best 358 yards passing and a TD, but the Cardinals (532 yards) were left playing catch-up after scoring on the game’s opening drive. Pass set career highs in passing attempts (54) and completions (30). Pass’s 54 passing attempts were the second most in a game by a Louisville player without an interception behind only Brian Brohm’s record of 58 attempts versus Utah on Oct. 5, 2007. The 54 passing attempts were the most for the Cardinals since they had 65 passing attempts against UConn on Nov. 24, 2012. Since being replaced as the starter versus Virginia, Pass is averaging 283.3 yards per game, throwing five touchdown passes and tossing three interceptions.

The Cardinals ran a season-high 90 plays from scrimmage, seven more than their previous high of 83 against Florida State. With 132 yards receiving, Chatarius Atwell set a Louisville record for most receiving yards in a game by a true freshman, breaking the previous record of 106 yards by Eli Rogers achieved at Cincinnati on Oct. 15, 2011.

The Cardinals are trying to avoid their first six-game conference losing streak since the 1997 and parts of the 1998 campaign. Louisville is allowing 43.0 points per game during this streak, giving up over 50 points on two occasions. The Cardinals are being outscored 112-34 in the second half over the last five games.

Why Bet on Clemson?

Clemson handed Florida State its worst loss in school history last week, 59-10. Freshman Trevor Lawrence threw for four touchdowns as the No. 2 Tigers won back-to-back games for the first time in program history at Doak Campbell Stadium. Lawrence broke Deshaun Watson’s school record for single-season passing touchdowns by a true freshman, recording 16 so far this year. Lawrence finished the game with a career-high 314 passing yards, connecting on 20-of-37 passes. The receiving duo of Amari Rodgers and Tee Higgins combined for four touchdowns and 218 yards, including a career-high 165 receiving yards by Rodgers. The Clemson defense forced seven three-and-outs by Florida State and totaled 14 tackles for loss, including five sacks.

Clemson’s 59 points were the most ever scored by an opponent at Florida State. Clemson has now scored 40 points in three straight games for the first time since the final game of 2014 and the first two games of 2015. It represents Clemson’s first time doing so in a single season since a four-game span in games 8-11 of the 2013 season. Clemson has now scored 163 points in its last three games, the team’s most points in a three-game span in ACC play since scoring 163 against Duke, Maryland and NC State in 2012.

Louisville vs Clemson should be a victory for the Tigers.

Clemson held Florida State to -21 rushing yards, breaking the mark for fewest rushing yards allowed by the Tigers in ACC play set at North Carolina on Nov. 4, 1989 (-6). The -21 rushing yards tied for the second-fewest rushing yards allowed in a game in school history, trailing only a rushing performance of -29 yards by Furman on Sept. 7, 1996.

Running back Travis Etienne is a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award. Etienne has rushed 108 times for 845 yards with 14 rushing touchdowns and an additional score via reception. He is currently tied for the national lead in points per game among non-kickers, averaging 11.3 points per contest. He scored at least one touchdown in each of Clemson’s first seven games and became the first player in school record to record three rushing touchdowns in three consecutive games when he accomplished the feat against Syracuse, Wake Forest, and NC State.
