NCAA Football MAC: Buffalo Favorite & Smart Pick, Kent State Longshot Choice

NCAA Football MAC: Buffalo Favorite & Smart Pick, Kent State Longshot Choice

While much of the focus in college football is on the Power 5 Conferences, there are some other really competitive conferences that deserve your attention. This is especially true given that the playoffs will be expanding sooner rather than later, which will mean that we will begin to see some of these so-called “lesser” schools playing beyond the end of the regular season. Today, we are going to take a look at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) for the coming season. This conference is split into two divisions, East and West. What is astounding about this conference is that there is no real dominant team, so picking a champion is tough. In fact, there have been 6 different winners in the last 6 years. Let’s take a closer look at how things might play out in 2021 so you can plan your bets against the College Football Conference Championship odds.

Odds to Win the 2021 MAC Conference Championship – Favorite, Smart and Longshot Pick

Favorites to Win the MAC in 2021

As we already mentioned, this conference is pretty wide open, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a favorite. The Buffalo Bulls (+300) are in as the current favorite after finishing ranked in the top 25 last season. They won the East Division in 2020, but they came up short in the Conference Championship Game, so they will be looking to go one better this season. The Ball State Cardinals, who are the defending champions, and the Toledo Rockets are both in at +325 to start the season, so as you can see, the bookies expect another tight race this season.

Smart Pick to Win the MAC in 2021

I hate to pick the favorite when making predictions, but it is hard to look past the Buffalo Bulls this season. They won the East Division in rather comfortable fashion last season, going 5-0 in conference play. The fact that no other teams in their division are among the favorites would lead you to believe that they might be a good bet to make it to the Championship Game again, just as they have done in 2 of the last 3 seasons. It is worth noting, though, that they have not won it since 2008, so that might put you off just a little. In fact, the West Division has delivered the conference champion in 7 of the last 10 years, so perhaps the Ball State Cardinals might be the smart pick to repeat here.

Longshot Pick to Win the MAC in 2021

Now comes the fun part of the preview, where we try to pick a team that might upset the apple cart a little and make a serious run at a great price. The Kent State Golden Flashes have not won the East division since 2008, but they have what looks to be the best offense in the conference heading into the season, led by QB Dustin Crum. They look like the most likely to beat out the Buffalo Bulls in the East at this point. They were only able to play 4 games last season, so I would essentially toss that out the window and take a serious look at Kent State, who are currently sitting at +1400 to win it all.
