Last Season

Toledo lost at Miami 52-30 last Sept. 23, the Rockets’ only defeat in their first eight games. Malik Rosier threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns, and Mark Walton needed only 11 carries to rush for a career-best 204 yards and another score. Walton is now in the NFL. Travis Homer ran for two touchdowns and Braxton Berrios, Dayall Harris and Christopher Herndon each caught TD throws for the Hurricanes. Logan Woodside completed 28 of 48 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns for Toledo, which cut a 22-point deficit down to eight midway through the fourth quarter. Woodside is gone now.

Why Bet on Miami?

The Canes were better off scrimmaging each other last week as they trashed Savannah State 77-0 to set a new program record for margin of victory and tie the record for most points scored in a game in UM history. The victory also snapped a four-match losing streak dating back to last season. Nine different Hurricanes combined to score 11 touchdowns, while six Miami players found the end zone for the first time in their collegiate careers and four different Miami quarterbacks were responsible for touchdowns. The Canes, who had 15 offensive players make their collegiate debut, totaled 494 yards of offense – 239 rushing yards and 255 passing yards – against Savannah State (0-2). Defensively, Miami notched its first shutout since 2015, when the Hurricanes held Bethune-Cookman scoreless in a 45-0 season-opening victory on Sept 5. Miami also forced four turnovers and scored on special teams in the victory. WR Jeff Thomas, who led the Hurricanes with 22 plays of at least 20 yards in 2017, already has nine such plays (four receptions, three kick returns, two punts) – including four of the top five longest – in 2018. Miami is making its first-ever trip to the Glass Bowl and its first trip to the state of Ohio since a 2015 matchup at Cincinnati (Oct. 1, 2015). A road team earning a victory at the Glass Bowl has been especially rare since Jason Candle took over at Toledo to the Boca Raton Bowl in 2015. The Rockets are 11-1 at home under Candle, including a perfect 6-0 and a year ago. Toledo’s only home loss under Candle came on Oct. 27, 2016, falling to Ohio University, 31-26. Miami has won its road opener each season since 2014, when UM fell to Louisville on Sept. 1 in the Cardinals’ first-ever game as an ACC football member; the Hurricanes have won three true road openers since.

Why Bet on Toledo?

Toledo is 8-5 since 1996 against power-conference opponents at the Glass Bowl. The other 11 teams in the MAC together have hosted an average of 2.2 games against power-league teams since 2006. Toledo has hosted eight — including Arizona, Colorado, and Missouri — along with then-ranked name-brand programs Fresno State and Boise State. The Rockets had a week to prepare for this one after winning Week 1 66-3 over VMI and then going on the bye. Mitchell Guadagni completed 11-of-16 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns in his debut at quarterback. Sophomore Shakif Seymour and redshirt freshman Bryant Koback rushed for two touchdowns apiece, while senior Cody Thompson caught one TD and recovered a blocked punt for another. The Rockets outgained VMI, 603-232, and led at halftime, 42-3. Toledo’s defense came up with several big plays, forcing three turnovers and limiting the Keydets to 61 yards rushing on 31 attempts. Miami vs Toledo looks like a great game. Toledo’s 63-point margin of victory over VMI was its largest since 1951 when UT defeated Davis & Elkins 88-0. It is also the third-largest margin of victory in program history. Toledo’s 66 points marked the sixth time under head coach Jason Candle that the Rockets have scored at least 50 points, and the second time they have scored at least 60. The Rockets rushed for 213 yards as a team against Virginia Military Institute, but success against VMI should be gone and forgotten when Toledo lines up against Miami. The Toledo offensive line has a big task ahead going up against the bulk of the Hurricanes’ front four and the speed and instincts of Miami’s junior linebacker trio. This is the ninth time Toledo has hosted a Top 25 team and the first time since 2014 when No. 22 Missouri knocked off the Rockets, 49-24.
