Miami vs Wisconsin 2018 Pinstripe Bowl Spread & Expert Pick

Written by on December 26, 2018

It’s called the Pinstripe Bowl from Yankee Stadium, but for 2018 it might as well be called the Disappointment Bowl. That’s because Miami and Wisconsin were both supposed to be national title contenders entering the year as preseason Top 10 teams but both hugely underachieved. They close the season against one another in a bowl for a second straight year. The Canes are slight college bowl betting favorites.

Last Meeting

In the Orange Bowl last season, Wisconsin was a 34-24 winner in Miami as an underdog vs. the Canes. Alex Hornibrook threw four touchdown passes, three to Danny Davis. Jonathan Taylor ran for 130 yards on 26 carries for the Badgers, who rallied from an early 14-3 deficit. Taylor finished the year with an FBS-freshman-record 1,977 yards. A.J. Taylor also had a scoring catch for Wisconsin.

The Badgers dominated time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 40 minutes. Hornibrook completed 23 of 34 passes for 258 yards, going 20 for 25 in the final three quarters. Travis Homer and Deejay Dallas had rushing scores for Miami. Malik Rosier was 11 for 26 passing for 203 yards — with three interceptions.

Why Bet on Miami?

A four-game slide in the middle of the season knocked the Hurricanes out of the ACC race. They recovered to win their last two games and desperately need some momentum heading into the offseason.

The Canes might be without starting QB N’Kosi Perry. In a video posted on the Instagram Live feed of teammate Gilbert Frierson late Sunday night, Perry – who is not on camera – can be heard saying, “I’m suspended, bro.” That’s because last week, it was reported that a sexually-explicit video was posted to one of Perry’s social media accounts. Miami officials have said that Perry would travel to New York with the team, but would not comment on whether or not he was suspended for the bowl game. He surely will be.

Perry and Malik Rosier have alternated start all season. The redshirt freshman Perry has completed 52 percent of his passes for 1,089 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. Rosier, a senior, has completed 54 percent of his passes for 1,007 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.

UM could lean on its running attack led by junior Travis Homer and sophomore DeeJay Dallas. Miami’s duo has combined for 1,578 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Freshman Cam’Ron Davis also came on late in the year and enters the bowl game with 167 rushing yards and a pair of rushing scores.

Miami has one of the nation’s top defenses, although coordinator Manny Diaz will be leaving for the top job at Temple. Miami ranked first in the nation in passing defense, third-down conversion defense and tackles for loss. UM also ranked second nationally in total defense, and third in passing efficiency defense. The Hurricanes’ 126 tackles for loss were the second-most in school history, trailing only the 1999 team (130). UM allowed just 140.8 yards per game through the air in 2018.

Up front, end Joe Jackson, a junior, racked up 47 tackles, 14.5 TFLs, and a team-leading nine sacks. Jonathan Garvin, a sophomore, amassed a career-best 54 tackles, 16 TFLs, and 5.5 sacks. Tackle Gerald Willis was named second-team All-America. He started all 12 games in the regular season and finished with a career-high 59 total tackles, four sacks, one fumble recovery and a whopping 18.0 tackles for loss, the most by any defensive tackle in FBS. Willis posted five games with at least two tackles for loss and led the ACC in tackles for loss. His 18 tackles for loss were the most by a Hurricane since Jacksonville Jaguars’ Pro Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell had 20.5 in 2006. However, Willis will not play in the bowl game so that’s a break for UW.

Why Bet on Wisconsin?

The Badgers closed the season with a 37-15 home loss to Minnesota, snapping a 14-game UW winning streak in the series. Wisconsin QB Alex Hornibrook, starting for the first time since missing two games while in the concussion protocol, threw three interceptions and lost a fumble on a sack. Minnesota scored 24 points off those miscues.

The Badgers are among the nation’s best at running the football, as All-American tailback Jonathan Taylor heads into the final game of the season with 1,989 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. Wisconsin will also be without Hornibrook, further emphasizing the Badgers’ need to establish their ground attack.

Miami vs Wisconsin should be a close one.

With 3,966 yards, Taylor has smashed Ron Dayne’s FBS record (3,566) for rushing yards by a player through his sophomore season. Georgia’s Herschel Walker (3,507) is the only other player with at least 3,500 yards through his first 2 seasons. Wisconsin ranks 7th nationally in rushing, averaging 268.4 yards per game and trails only triple-option attack Georgia Tech (334.9) among Power Five conference teams.

Sophomore quarterback Jack Coan will give up a redshirt season to start against Miami because Hornibrook is still dealing with concussion-like symptoms. Coan has completed 61 percent of his passes for 442 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions this season.

Wisconsin linebacker Ryan Connelly is out after undergoing surgery for an unspecified injury that had bothered him late in the regular season. Senior ILB T.J. Edwards is the Big Ten’s active leader in tackles with 358 for his career, including the career-high 18 stops he made vs. Minnesota. Already boasting a career-best 104 on the season, Edwards needs 5 more tackles to move into the Badgers’ all-time top 10.

The Badgers have won 4 straight bowl games, matching Georgia, Louisiana Tech and Utah for the nation’s longest active streak. Wisconsin’s 17 straight bowl appearances mark the Big Ten’s longest run and rank in a tie for 5th nationally.
