Why Michigan Will Top Their Win Total Odds?
After going 10-3 in 2018 for the third time in four seasons under Harbaugh, there are clearly some good reasons to back Michigan to top their win total odds of 9½ victories. First, the Wolverines hired a new offensive coordinator in former Alabama offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Josh Gattis who is reportedly set to install a new, spread offense in 2019.
Then, there’s the fact that quarterback Shea Patterson will be in his second season under Harbaugh and is quite familiar with spread offenses, having run a similar offense at Ole Miss during his time there. Better yet, Patterson will be operating behind a veteran offensive line that returns every starter from a year ago except right tackle Juwann Bushell-Beatty. Patterson will also have some solid targets to throw to in returning receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nico Collins, Ronnie Bell and Tarik Black.
Last but not least, Michigan has reached 10 wins three times in four years under Harbaugh, so seeing them reach that figure again in 2019 isn’t very much of a stretch.
Why Michigan Won’t Top Their Win Total Odds?
While there are some great reasons to back Michigan to top their win total odds, there are also a handful of good reasons to back Michigan to come up just short. First, there are some real question marks at running back after the Wolverines lost 2018 rushing leader Karan Higdon to graduation. Even more important is the fact that Michigan’s defense took a big hit by losing stars like defensive linemen Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich and linebacker Devin Bush Jr., not to mention the fact that defensive line coach Greg Mattison bolted to take the job arch-rival Ohio State.
Prediction
While Michigan needs to rebuild their defense and have some real questions they need to answer on the offensive side of the ball, the Wolverines should definitely be able to make a run at 10 wins. After two easy contests to kick off the new season, Michigan will have a super difficult road date at Wisconsin and later on, at Penn State. Home dates against Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State in their regular season finale will be daunting to say the least. Still, I’ve got the Wolverines dropping just two regular season contests to finish the regular season at 10-2.
While the Wolverines have a handful of tough road matchups and have just five home games in 12 regular season contests, I’m going with Shea Paterson to manage to lead the big ten title hopefuls to at east 10 wins this coming season while taking out the likes of Big Ten rival, Rutgers, Iowa, Illinois, Maryland and Indiana. I’m going with Jim Harbaurgh’s squad to record 10 wins in 2019 and you should too!
