Why Bet on Mississippi State?

MSU beat FCS school Stephen F. Austin in its opener without star QB Nick Fitzgerald, who was suspended one game for a team violation … back in March. Fitzgerald threw for 1,782 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He also rushed for 984 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Bulldogs didn’t need him in a 63-6 rout in Joe Moorhead’s MSU head coaching debut. The Bulldogs, who scored on their first play, tallied 214 yards and 21 points in the first quarter to set the tone in an impressive debut for Moorhead and his staff, a game in which State amassed 618 yards of offense and also saw State’s defense limit SFA to just two field goals. In just his second career start, quarterback Keytaon Thompson was easily the star of the night for MSU, accounting for 473 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns (tied SEC record) in just over three-quarters of action. He was 13-of-31 for 364 yards and five scores (tying an MSU record) through the air and also rushed for a team-best 109 yards and two TDs. Thompson’s first five completions of the game all went for 20 or more yards. All nine of Thompson’s first-half completions went to nine different receivers for 263 total yards and four touchdowns. The Bulldogs’ 63 points scored were the most by an MSU coach in his debut. The last mark was set in 1914, when State won 54-0 over Marion [Ala.] Military Inst. in E.C. Hayes’ first game. MSU’s 63 points were also the most in a season opener since Sept. 23, 1950, when MSU defeated Arkansas State 67-0. MSU’s 63 points were the 13th highest point total in program history and the most scored by MSU since putting up 65 against Ole Miss in 2015. It was MSU’s largest margin of victory since defeating Northeast Louisiana (UL-Monroe) 59-0 on Nov. 2, 1996. Winners of 36 of its last 41 non-conference matchups, MSU will play its first road game against a Power 5 team since at Georgia Tech on Sept. 20, 2008, and is seeking its first win in such games since a 30-21 victory at Baylor on Sept. 16, 1995.

Why Bet on Kansas State?

It will be only the third meeting between the Bulldogs and Wildcats ever and the first since 1977. It will also be MSU’s first-ever trip to Manhattan. The Wildcats barely avoided humiliation last week with a 27-24 win over FCS South Dakota. After blowing a 24-12 fourth-quarter lead, South Dakota, which had led for a majority of the game, was given new life with just 50 seconds left after forcing an Alex Barnes’ fumble deep in Coyote territory. The Coyotes drove down the field and set up for what would have been a game-tying field goal, but Mason Lorber missed a 51-yard attempt as time expired. Wide receiver Isaiah Zuber not only caught the game-winning touchdown pass late in the game against USD, but he also returned a punt 85 yards for a score to earn Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors. K-State played both Skylar Thompson (started) and Alex Delton at QB against South Dakota with Thompson leading the Cats to his third fourth-quarter comeback win in the Wildcats’ last six total games. Mississippi State vs Kansas State should be a victory for MSU. The Wildcats have the benefit of having all five returning starters along the offensive line back for another year, one of just five FBS teams to return 65-of-65 starts along the offensive line from 2017. A win here would give KSU its first victory over a ranked non-conference opponent since 2002 (USC). It would also make K-State 56-3 in September home games under Billy Snyder since 1992. K-State is riding a nine-game winning streak in September home games (Last loss: 20-14 loss to Auburn in 2014). K-State is just 8-15 all-time vs. current members of the SEC (minus long-time conference foes Missouri and A&M). The Cats haven’t beaten an SEC team in the regular season since 1982.
