Last Season
The Wolfpack nearly upset the heavily-favored Tigers in 2016 and should have won that game but for a late missed field goal. Last year, NC State was again a pretty big dog and again played well but came up short in a 38-31 loss. Tavien Feaster ran for an 89-yard touchdown to end the third quarter and K’Von Wallace picked off Ryan Finley on the final play.
Feaster’s break-loose run up the middle and gave Clemson a 31-21 lead entering the fourth, then the Tigers had to hang on in the final seconds. The Tigers beat the Wolfpack for the sixth straight year and 13th time in 14 meetings. Finley threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns, and he’s still with NC State.
Clemson’s 57 current wins against NC State are the program’s third-most against any opponent, trailing only the team’s win totals against South Carolina (69) and Wake Forest (66).
Why Bet on NC State?
NC State (5-0) and Clemson (6-0) are two of the remaining eight FBS teams still undefeated, and two of just five among Power 5 teams.
The Wolfpack are unbeaten but no one really knows if they are any good with a weak schedule. Dave Doeren has slowly and meticulously constructed a contender at NC State. With each passing year, his teams have become more talented. NC State had a game vs. ranked West Virginia canceled by a hurricane.
Two weeks ago, NC State beat Boston College 28-23. NC State jumped out to a 28-3 lead in the third quarter and held off Boston College’s 20 unanswered points. NC State rushed for a season-best 225 yards, powered by Sr. Reggie Gallaspy, Jr., who had a career-best 104 yards and two scores. QB Ryan Finley threw for 308 yards and two scores, while WR Kelvin Harmon finished with nine receptions for 128 yards and one TD.
Gallaspy, Jr., now has at least one rushing score in every game this year. Over the first five games of the season, he now has seven rushing scores, the fifth-most in school history five games into a season. In terms of receiving yards per game, Harmon leads the ACC (and ranks 6th in the FBS) with 106.8 ypg.
Finley has started 31 games for the Wolfpack (every game since he’s been at NC State) and posts a 21-10 record in those starts for a .677 winning percentage. That’s higher than any of the four former Wolfpack quarterbacks who are now playing in the NFL: Philip Rivers, Russell Wilson, Mike Glennon, and Jacoby Brissett and the third-highest mark in school history for players who started at least 25 games in their career.
The Pack’s start is the school’s best since 2002 and for only the eighth time in school history. NC State has opened ACC action 2-0 for the second straight season, and the fifth time since 2000. This marks the first time since 2000 that the Wolfpack will play in an October game that boasts two unbeaten teams. In that season, head coach Chuck Amato’s first as head coach, a 4-0 NC State squad headed to South Carolina to face a 4-0 Clemson squad. The Wolfpack lost that game, 27-34.
Why Bet on Clemson?
If Clemson finishes the regular season undefeated, it has a 91.3 percent chance to make the playoff and a 24.3 percent chance to win it all. The Tigers have three true road wins (at Texas A&M, at Georgia Tech, and at Wake Forest) against teams currently .500 or better, which will impress the College Football Playoff committee.
So will Clemson’s offense, as quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed 20 of 25 passes for 175 yards and three different players ran for at least 125 yards apiece in the 63-3 rout on Oct. 6 at Wake Forest. Travis Etienne has rushed for three touchdowns in each of Clemson’s past two games, and with a repeat performance this week, he would become the first player in school history to score three rushing touchdowns in three consecutive games. The Tigers are averaging 6.96 yards per carry this season, more than a full yard better than the current team record (5.72 in 2006).
Clemson also is leading the country in defensive efficiency. It enters the game as the only program in the country in the Top 10 in both total offense (531.0, eighth) and total defense (261.2, third).
By opening the season with six consecutive victories for a fourth straight year, the Tigers became the only team in ACC history to start 6-0 in four consecutive seasons. Clemson has won 14 of their last 16 meetings against AP Top 25 foes since 2015. Clemson is 8-5 at home against Top 25 opponents under Dabo Swinney.
