College Football Team Analysis Series – Top 5 Teams
Alabama Crimson Tide (+225)
The 2020 national champs return as the favorites to repeat as the champions this season. Alabama welcomes back a handful of talent on the defensive end and will need to retool on offense.
With Mac Jones gone, along with the team’s leading running back and top two wideouts, Alabama will have some new faces this season on offense. Bryce Young is expected to take over the role under center, and the young signal-caller is hyped up to be the next star in Tuscaloosa. Wide receiver John Metchie II returns as the primary target outside, and Brian Robinson Jr. takes the lead role at running back.
Clemson Tigers (+450)
Trevor Lawrence left after a historic three years under center for the Clemson Tigers. While Lawrence has graduated to the NFL, the Tigers bring back ten starters on defense and have a favorable slate of games.
We got to see a glimpse of the talent of sophomore quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei last season, with Lawrence was sidelined for two games after a positive COVID test. Uiagalelei has the talent and skill to be the next Heisman winner at Clemson. Star wide receiver Justyn Ross returns after missing 2020 with an injury.
Georgia Bulldogs (+600)
Georgia’s roster is filled with blue-chip talent, and now the Bulldogs appear to have the quarterback needed to take the next step. JT Daniels emerged over the final four games of play and looked the part.
Head coach Kirby Smart is a mastermind on defense, and even with departures, the Georgia Bulldogs have talent waiting in the wings to shine. The entire backfield is back along with sophomore wideout Jermaine Burton who was one of Daniels’ favorite targets.
Ohio State Buckeyes (+650)
Who will take over the quarterback role is one of the bigger stories in college football heading into the season. Whoever takes over the duties gets three of the top four pass-catchers back from last season’s team. Wideouts Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson and tight end Jeremy Ruckert give the new quarterback talent on the outside.
A handful of talent returns to the Buckeyes defense, but improvements must be made if the Buckeyes expect to contend for a national title. Of the eight games OSU played last season, opponents scored 20 or more points in five of them.
Oklahoma Sooners (+700)
The only team of the top five with an established quarterback returning, the Sooners appear to be a heavy contender to return to the college football playoffs. Expectations are high for Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler who is the pre-season betting favorite to win the Heisman.
Talent returns on both sides of the Sooners roster, and the schedule shapes up nicely for a run at a Big 12 title and a trip to the playoffs.
