NMSU opened the season at No. 23 Washington State and was routed 58-7. Cougars QB Anthony Gordon, in his first NCAA start, completed his first 15 passes, threw for 330 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone. Gordon finished 29 of 35 for 420 yards and five TD passes before checking out late in the third quarter.
New Mexico State quarterback Josh Adkins scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter when he recovered a fumble and took the loose ball into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7. That was the highlight of the night for the Aggies, who were limited to 317 total yards. Adkins was 28 of 42 for 221 yards and two interceptions. Adkins’ rushing touchdown was the first by an NM State quarterback since QB Matt Romero’s two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter against New Mexico last season (9/15).
Senior running back Jason Huntley finished the night with 54 rushing yards on nine carries, breaking free for a 27-yard run to set up the Aggies’ first-quarter touchdown. Wideouts OJ Clark and Tony Nicholson each recorded seven receptions on 11 targets.
