Why Bet on New Mexico?

Former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie will not accompany his New Mexico team to South Bend, Ind., for Saturday’s game at Notre Dame due to doctor’s orders. This game would not have been scheduled if not for Davie, who succeeded Lou Holtz as Notre Dame coach after the 1996 season. Notre Dame is paying New Mexico $1.1 million for the visit.

UNM has been off since a 39-31 home win over Sam Houston State on Aug. 31. UNM led for most of the game as starting quarterback Brandt Hughes threw for 218 yards in the first half. Hughes led UNM to a pair of touchdowns by Ahmari Davis on the ground and three Andrew Shelley field goals, but he suffered a shoulder injury and gave way to Sherrion Jones in the second half.

The Lobos picked up 485 yards of offense on 72 plays, averaging 6.7 yards per play. UNM also had plenty of big plays with eight of 25 yards or more. Of UNM’s four touchdown drives against Sam Houston State, the longest was 1:57, and that was the only one of the four over one minute. The Lobos had scoring drives of 1:57, 0:59, 0:41 and 0:23, for an average of 1:00 per touchdown drive.

Davie was rushed to UNM Hospital after he experienced what was believed to be chest pains following the win. It’s not clear who will start at quarterback for this game. “It’s a situation where we have four really good players (Hughes, Jones, Tevaka Tuioti, Trae Hall),” interim coach Saga Tuitele said this week.

New Mexico is 6-55 all-time against ranked opponents dating back to the 1940 season. UNM is 4-25 at home vs. ranked opponents, 2-29 on the road and 0-1 on neutral fields. UNM’s last win over a ranked opponent was on October 25, 2003, when the Lobos won at No. 23 Utah 47-35. UNM’s last win over a top 10 program was also against Utah, a 23-21 win on November 5, 1994. UNM is 1-17 all-time against top-10 teams and 0-5 vs. top-five teams.

It was the second career 100-yard rushing game for Jones, whose career-high of 118 yards came against Vanderbilt in 2018. Notre Dame trailed 14-7 in the first before Jones’ score tied it, and Book followed with an 11-yard scoring run just before halftime.
