The North Carolina Tar Heels enter the season one of the most intriguing in college football. In 2022, the offense was one of NCAAF’s most dynamic.
The Heels will, again, lean on an offense that was a leader in points scored per game. But if the Tar Heels have any designs on beating Clemson and Florida State and winning the ACC, the defense must step it up.
Let’s break down North Carolina Tar Heels this year. Here’s the preview for your college football betting lines to win the NCAA National Championship.

What is North Carolina’s Straight Up Prediction this Season?
It all starts with Heisman Trophy candidate Drake Maye. The breakout star for the Heels last season posted phenomenal stats as a freshman. Maye threw for 4,321 yards and 38 TDs.
Maye rushed for 698 yards and 7 touchdowns. This season, Maye won’t have to rush the ball as much because Elijah Green leads one of the deeper running back rooms in college football.
Also, UNC returns four starters along the offensive line with at least 5 years, not 4, but 5 years of college football experience. Offensive line is one of the best indicators of a team’s ability to win games.
Receiver transfers Devontez Walker and Nate McCollum will spread the field. Tight ends John Copenhaver and Kamari Morales are as good of a pair of tight ends in college. Both have major chances of playing on Sundays after they leave North Carolina.
The key for UNC will be on the defensive side. The offense will score points. But if the defense gives up points in 2023 like it did in 2022, it won’t matter what Maye and the offense accomplish.
For the Heels, the front seven must perform. North Carolina boasts 5 seniors and 2 juniors in their front seven. The problem is that there isn’t a star among the bunch. If the front seven protects a retooled secondary, UNC could lower the average points allowed per game from last season’s 31 to 26 to 28.
Even a small difference of 3 points would boost UNC’s chances of winning at least 10 games, which is our SU prediction.
Tar Heels predicted SU record: 10-2
What Will the Tar Heels’ Against the Spread Record Be this Season?
UNC went 6-7 ATS, but they lost 4 games late last season by 3 points or less. North Carolina had to rely too much on their offense.
If the defense steps it up, the Heels could win more games against the spread in 2023, then they did in 2022. Instead of 6-6, will give UNC 1 more victory ATS.
Tar Heels predicted ATS record: 7-5
What Will Be the Over Under Total Record for North Carolina Games in 2023?
Oddsmakers adjusted quickly to Maye and the Tar Heels’ offense. North Carolina games went under 7 times and over 6 times.
Consistency is an issue with most college programs due to player turnover but Mack Brown convinced Maye to stay. So we should expect a similar over to under record. Let’s go 6-6
Tar Heels predicted O/U record: 6-6
