Why Bet on Ohio State versus Purdue

5-0 straight up Ohio State already has a couple of Big Ten Conference victories. The Buckeyes blasted Indiana 23-3 in their first game. Then in their second Big Ten matchup, which happened last week, Ohio State pummeled Maryland 37-17.

Buckeyes starting quarterback Kyle McCord has developed a nice rapport with top wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. But it’s the Ohio State defense that’s really impressive.

The Buckeyes are allowing 10.2 points per game. Holding a quality offense like Maryland’s to 17 is a big deal.

Ohio State Buckeyes Offensive Averages

  • Total Yards: 434.8
  • Passing Yards: 302.8
  • Rushing Yards: 132.0
  • Points Scored: 35.0
  • Turnovers: 1

Ohio State Buckeyes Defensive Averages

  • Total Yards: 264.8
  • Passing Yards: 158.4
  • Rushing Yards: 106.4
  • Points Scored: 10.2
  • Takeaways: 5

Why Bet on Purdue versus Ohio State

Purdue shouldn’t beat Ohio State. However, the Boilermakers have 20.5 points to work with and this happens on their field. So Purdue could keep this game closer than the spread.

The key for Purdue will be to chew up clock when they have the ball. The Boilermakers rush for 141.2 yards per game, which means if offensive coordinator Graham Harrell leans on the short-passing game to keep the ball out of McCord’s mitts, this game could end up closer than the spread.

When Purdue is on defense, the unit must play bend but don’t break. McCord, Harrison, and Egbuka can light up the scoreboard on any play. So it will be up to Purdue’s D to keep everything in front of them and attempt to hold the Buckeyes to elongated drives that end in field goals.

Purdue Boilermakers Offensive Averages

  • Total Yards: 389.7
  • Passing Yards: 248.5
  • Rushing Yards: 141.2
  • Points Scored: 25.7
  • Turnovers: 5

Purdue Boilermakers Defensive Averages

  • Total Yards: 381.3
  • Passing Yards: 226.5
  • Rushing Yards: 154.8
  • Points Scored: 28.0
  • Takeaways: 6

Purdue versus Ohio State Final Betting Prediction

This game will come down to how well Purdue employs their game plan. The Boilermakers had an excellent game plan in their last.

Versus a strong defensive team in Iowa, Purdue managed 14 points and held the Hawkeyes to just 20. In the game before, the Boilermakers held Illinois to 19 and scored 44 in a 44-19 thrashing of the Illini.

What the two different scores tell us is that Purdue’s coaches know how to implement different strategies to put their players into the best position for victory. Victories are hard to come by because Purdue simply doesn’t have the talent to hang with a lot of Big Ten opponents.

But on Saturday, Purdue should play well. The Boilermakers won’t win the game. They may not even come close. However, Purdue will have enough success in this one, especially because it happens in West Lafayette, to get an ATS win.
