Why Bet on Oklahoma?

The Sooners might pass a little more than normal as top running back Samaje Perine will miss a few weeks at least with an injured hamstring. The injury occurred during a 25-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of Oklahoma’s 38-17 win against Kansas State last week. He had rushed 48 yards on that drive and didn’t return. In six games this season, Perine has rushed for 475 yards and six touchdowns. The Sooners do have another good running back on Joe Mixon, who against K-State had 19 carries for 88 yards, three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown, and one 26-yard pass for a touchdown. In the win over KSU, Baker Mayfield completed all but six of his 31 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns, and Dede Westbrook had nine receptions for 184 yards and three scores as OU pulled away. One week after Mayfield passed for 390 yards and Westbrook had a school-record 232 yards receiving, they were electric once again as Oklahoma (4-2, 3-0 Big 12) won its third straight game after starting out 1-2. The Sooners recorded 510 yards of total offense and put up 38 points against a Kansas State defense that entered the contest allowing just 310.2 yards per game (14th nationally) and 17.3 points per game (tied for 15th nationally). OU’s defense limited the Wildcats to 17 points. Kansas State entered the game averaging 34.2 points per contest. It marked just the third game this season for OU against an unranked opponent. Under Bob Stoops, the Sooners are 127-18 (.876) against unranked teams (76-14 [.844] in Big 12 play vs. unranked competition. Stoops is 12-5 vs. Texas Tech as OU’s head coach and 3-0 against Kliff Kingsbury. The average series score the last three years has been 48-29. Oklahoma has scored at least 38 points in each of its last six contests against Texas Tech.

Texas Tech had previously scored at least 25 points in each of its last 21 games dating back to the 2014 season. It was the longest active streak in the country. Mahomes remains at less than 100 percent physically while battling a shoulder injury, coach Kliff Kingsbury acknowledged this week. But the FBS leader in passing yards (2,579) and total offense (455.2 yards per game) will play vs. Oklahoma. Mahomes strained his throwing shoulder in a Sept. 29 victory against Kansas and has attempted to play through the pain the past two weeks in losses to Kansas State and West Virginia. The Red Raiders have won three of the last four contests vs. Oklahoma held inside Jones AT&T Stadium.
