The countdown is on until the start of the college football season and fans are already looking at how to wager over the next few months. For many, the first step in making money on the college football season is picking the winner of each of the conferences. Some bettors go deep, playing some of the minor conferences, while others stick to the Power 5. It is going to be interesting to see how that looks in a few years, though, with Texas and Oklahoma making the move to the SEC for the 2025 season. We will worry about all that at a later date, but for now, let’s take a look at the Big 12 might play out in the 2021 college football season. It’s time to jump right into action so you can plan your bets against the NCAAF odds.
Odds to Win the 2021 Big 12 Conference Championship – Favorite, Smart and Longshot Pick
Favorite to Win the Big 12
There is a very clear favorite in the Big 12 this season, with the Oklahoma Sooners once again seen as the team to beat. Not only are they the favorite to win the conference, they are also seen as one of the top teams in the game and among the favorites to win the National Championship. Spencer rattler and the Sooners offense is once again going to be tough to stop, but Oklahoma will need to tighten up on the defensive side of things if they are to make it to the playoffs. Their main threat this season would appear to be either Iowa State, the team they beat in the Big 12 Conference Championship Game last season; or Texas. The rest of the pack seems to be too out of it to really consider.
Smart Pick to Win the Big 12
Back in 2010, the Big 12 decided to do away with the championship game, but it eventually made its return in 2017. Since that return, it has been the Oklahoma Sooners who have dominated, winning each of the last 4. In fact, if you go back to before the break, the Sooners have actually won 9 of the last 11 conference titles. There is a reason why they are such clear favorites heading into the new season and why they are also the smart pick to win. It is also worth noting that there have been 4 different teams facing them in the title game over the last 4 years, so there is no real sign that one team outside of Oklahoma has been consistently good enough to break up the Sooners run of wins.
Longshot Possibilities in the Big 12
Given the current odds, you have to say that any team other than Oklahoma has to be considered a longshot to win the Big 12. The Iowa State Cyclones actually won the regular season conference title last year, but they came up short in the big game. They have a lot of their starters returning this season, and while they should have another good season, can they make that major breakthrough. It might also be worth taking a look at the Texas Longhorns. They have been a sleeping giant for much too long, but they look as though they might be ready to make a serious challenge for the conference crown.
