When you think about the ACC and football, you normally think of Clemson and Miami. Well, while the Clemson Tigers were the heavy favorite to win the ACC last season, that didn’t happen. Miami wasn’t in the title picture either. The winner of the ACC was actually the Pitt Panthers.
Led by first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett, the Panthers snuck up on everyone and ended up winning the ACC. We’re not sure if they’ll be able to do it again this season, as Pickett is gone, and there are some tough games on their schedule. Let’s take a look at Pitt’s season schedule, and their projected win total so you can make your bets against the NCAA Football Regular Season Wins Odds.
Is Another Conference Title on the Horizon for the Pitt Panthers?
And the Oddsmakers Say…..
The oddsmakers have released their projected win totals for the 2022 season. In looking at Pitt’s number, the oddsmakers have given them an over/under of 8.5 wins. Now let’s take a look at their 2022 schedule.
2022 Schedule
Pitt has two tough non-conference opponents right out of the gate. In Week 1, they host the West Virginia Mountaineers. The “Backyard Brawl” always brings out the best in both teams. West Virginia will have a lot of new faces, so we’re not sure how good they truly are.
In Week 2, they’ll head to Heinz Field to take on Tennessee. Josh Heupel has done a great job of building the Tennessee program. The Vols should have a strong rushing game that should cause issues for Pitt’s stout defense.
In Weeks 3 and 4, Tennessee gets a little bit of a break, as their non-conference games will be against Western Michigan and Rhode Island. Pitt has to play at Western Michigan, and then they’ll wrap up their non-conference portion of their schedule by hosting Rhode Island.
In looking at their ACC schedule, Pitt will host Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Duke. They’ll have road games against Louisville, North Carolina, Virginia, and Miami. Pitt doesn’t have to play North Carolina State, Clemson, or Wake Forest, so this is a fairly soft ACC schedule, which bodes well for them.
Season Prediction
In looking at their schedule, we see the Pittsburgh Panthers finishing with a 10-2 record. We can see them losing to Miami and Louisville. As we stated earlier, they caught a break with their soft ACC schedule.
Even though they lost Pickett, USC transfer Kedon Slovis could be more talented than Pickett. Pitt will continue to throw the football a lot, and Slovis should have a big season in this offense. The skill players should be strong, and Pitt should also have a stellar offensive line.
On the defensive side of the ball, the defensive line will be one of the best in the country. This should make things tough for the opposing quarterbacks. However, if they can elude the rush, the Pitt secondary shouldn’t be a very strong group, so they could give up a lot of yards and points.
All in all, this should be another strong Pitt team that will contend for the ACC title once again this season.
