It’s downtime for college football as we’re heading into the summer months. It won’t be long before we’ll be kicking things off for the 2021 season at the end of August. The NFL Draft and everything that surrounds it is finally over. The spring season is wrapping up as well. One of the biggest topics throughout the spring season was who was going to replace some of the quarterbacks who graduated, left early for the draft, or transferred to another school. Let’s take a look at some of the quarterback battles that could affect next year’s national championship race so you can start planning your bets against their NCAAF odds.
NCAA Football Rumors & Betting News May 3rd Edition
Ohio State Buckeyes
Since Justin Fields left for the NFL Draft, the Buckeyes have big shoes to fill. There’s a three-way battle that Ryan Day will have to settle. CJ Stroud and Jack Miller are two quarterbacks who have been in the Ohio State program. They both are familiar with the Buckeyes offense, and that could give them the advantage. The other quarterback in the fray is top recruit, Kyle McCord. McCord enrolled early at Ohio State so he could gain some valuable experience this spring. Whoever wins the battle will have a very talented group of wide receivers to throw to next season.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
With Ian Book gone, Brian Kelly is looking for a new signal-caller. Right now, there is a very crowded quarterback room in South Bend. There are five quarterbacks vying for the starting spot. The leader is Jack Coan. Coan is a transfer from Wisconsin that has a lot of experience in big games. If Coan doesn’t get the nod, Brian Kelly will have to choose from Ron Powlus III, whose father was a starting quarterback at Notre Dame. Drew Pyne, Brendon Clark, and Tyler Buchner will fight it out for the starting spot.
Texas Longhorns
Steve Sarkisian will bring his offensive system to Texas and will have to find a new starting quarterback. With Sam Ehlinger having been drafted in this year’s NFL draft, there’s not much experience left in the quarterback room at Texas. Casey Thompson and Hudson Card are two that were left from Tom Herman’s regime. They have very little experience among them. Incoming freshman Charles Wright won’t be far behind Thompson and Card, as all three of them will be learning an entirely new offensive system.
Florida State Seminoles
While there are a lot of quarterbacks vying for the starting spot, there’s one, in particular, that should land the starting spot. McKenzie Milton was a very solid quarterback at Central Florida and is now projected to be the starter for Florida State. Milton will have to beat out Jordan Travis, Chubba Purdy, and Tate Rodemaker. All three of them saw some action for the Seminoles last season. Travis and Purdy can both run with the ball, so those two could see some action to show the other teams some different looks, but in the end, it should be Milton that sees a majority of the snaps for the Florida State Seminoles.
